Avery's eyes blurred as he clicked the respawn button, the screen frozen after Derek pushed him into the void. Finally after what felt like an eternity the world loaded and dropped him right in front of the first gates, right where Derek had first found the King in yellow, but when Avery tried to walk inside he found just a black blocks. Breaking them just revealed stone behind it, the more he tried to advance the more evident it was that there was nothing there.

Winterhawk (finally!), Major Character Death (obviously), Darkly Funny (hopefully), written for @killacharacterbingo . Now complete.
Excerpt:
Thereâs a figure walking toward him from the other side. Bucky squints, stares, and then straightens his shoulders.
âHi, Buck,â says Steve warmly, once he reaches the gates.
Bucky laughs. âFigured youâd be in there. Whereâs the wings?â
Steve grins. Itâs just like Bucky remembers, and ainât that a warmth in his chest, remembering. âLeft âem at home, theyâre more of a pain than youâd think.â
âGood of âem to let me see you one last time, though,â says Bucky, getting as close to the gate as he can. Steveâs hanging off of it, his arms leaning on some of the curlier bits, though he frowns like Buckyâs said something ridiculous.
âWhat dâyou mean?â
âWell,â says Bucky, motioning to the gates. âAinât like Iâm going in there with you.â
âOh,â says Steve. âNah, thatâs not it. Just waiting for someone.â
Hmm. Wonder who it could be.... đ
I have now completed a blackout; please see under the cut for the full card.

A wry glint had peaked through the thousand yard stare that marred Steveâs features that day. He didnât want to impose then but maybe he should have taken Sam up on his offer.

From the horizon, thunder rumbled with a force that made the ground shake beneath your boots.
You walked alongside Steve, who was a few steps ahead of you, his shield on his back and his uniform soaked by the drizzle that was beginning to fall. Every so often, he looked up, as if expecting the sky itself to give him answers that never came.
âA thunderstorm is coming,â he said, adjusting the strap on his shield. âIt's going to be bad.â
âAs if everything else wasn't enough...â you replied.
It had been days since Hydra activated the Fusion Device, a machine designed to absorb the energy from storms and redirect it into a weapon capable of wiping out entire cities in seconds. The problem: the device's core was unstable. If you didn't shut it down before the next discharge, all the accumulated energy would blow up the city... and with it, everything within a hundred-kilometer radius.
The plan was simple: get to the core, cut the power before the main storm, and survive. But neither of them said aloud what you both sensed: disconnecting it manually meant staying inside when the power collapsed.
The streets were deserted. Broken glass crunched under their boots, and fallen poles crackled with remnants of electricity. At every corner, lightning illuminated the ruins for fractions of a second, revealing overturned cars, shattered windows, and dark puddles that might have been water... or might not have been.
The wind carried the smell of ozone, burnt metal, and impending storm.
Finally, as night fell, you reached the heart of the city: the old government building where Hydra had installed the Fusion Device. The structure looked like a steel monster, with makeshift towers, hanging cables, and a central sphere glowing with an intermittent blue light.
âThere's still time,â Steve murmured tensely. âLet's go.â
Inside, the air vibrated with pure electricity. Each step toward the core was accompanied by a low hum that reverberated in their chests, as if the energy wanted to rip their hearts out from within.
âThere it is...â you said, seeing the central cylinder surrounded by flashing lights and sparks falling like artificial rain.
But you weren't alone.
Hydra soldiers, the last loyal to the project, emerged from the shadows with weapons gleaming under the lightning that filtered through the broken ceiling.
The first shot rang out, and everything turned to chaos. You took cover behind a collapsed column, firing at any hostile shadows that moved. Steve, shield raised, advanced like a human wall, blocking bursts of fire and knocking down enemies.
Lightning illuminated the battle in fleeting flashes: a blow, a fall, the glint of a knife, and the clang of metal against metal.
When the last soldier fell, you were both covered in sweat, rain, and dust.
âHow do we turn it off?â you asked, running to the console.
âIt can't be turned off from the outside. You have to go into the main duct and shut off the flow manually.â
âAnd the discharge?â You knew the answer, but you needed to hear it.
âThe person who does it... won't come out.â
The silence was broken by thunder so close that the walls shook. Rain began to fall through the destroyed roof, cold and intense, soaking everything.
âI'll go,â you said, stepping forward.
âNo. I'll do it.â
âSteve, no...â You tried to approach him, but he shook his head.
âI've fought too many wars to see someone else die in my place. If this ends with me... that's okay.â
Lightning flashed across his face at that moment, and you understood that he had already made up his mind.
The counter read 00:04:32 when Steve approached the duct. The metal hatch was open, revealing a narrow passageway where energy crackled violently.
Before entering, he looked at you one last time.
âPromise me you'll get out of here as soon as this is over.â
Tears burned in your eyes, but you nodded.
âI promise.â
Steve smiled slightly, that sad and brave smile he always wore before doing something impossible. Then he ran into the conduit.
From outside, you saw him advance through sparks and exploding wires. Every flash of lightning in the sky seemed to strike inside the device as well, shaking the structure.
âAlmost there!â Steve shouted, his voice drowned out by the electrical roar.
âHurry!â you begged, your heart pounding against your ribs.
The counter read 00:00:59 when he reached the central panel. You saw him raise the shield one last time to protect himself from a shock, then pull the main lever with all his strength.
A white light flooded everything.
The machine collapsed with a deafening roar. You ran toward the duct, but the interior was just a sea of sparks, smoke, and twisted metal.
