Is there way to effectively dual-wield weapons? If a sword and buckler or targe can be used together, it seems like it should be possible to wield something else in the off-hand.
Sure, there have been styles designed for a main-hand and short off-hand weapon. That was the entire point of the main-gauche or parrying dagger in HEMA. Musashi designed the niten ichi-ryu with wakazashi in the off-hand.
If you're using short weapons only, there are a lot of weapons to use. The kama, the sai, the rattan stick are all made to be used paired.
