The other day I was at Walmart and couldn't pass up on this colorful desk calendar. I use it just for keeping track of my writing! Since it's out in the open and we sometimes have family over, every project is mentioned in abbreviations only š but I know what I mean. It's been helpful for tracking word count and what I work on for that day!
Today I'm going to plan out what's due on which days in August. š

Iāve been trying to think about how the hell Iām going to find my āthingā. No one follows an author (unless theyāre a reader whoās legitimately interested in their writing) unless they feel the author in question has something to give back to them.
Iāve been trying to think of what exactly I have to give back to my fellow authors who follow me (thank you by the way, Iām happy to have you!), and for the readers who have a particular interest in seeing the behind the scenes of what I do.
Most people like to think that they have something interesting about them, and I admittedly am one of them. Iām not super-interesting-to-the-max⢠but Iāve got enough going on that Iām not a totally boring shut in.
For one, know Iām becoming adept at decorating for being on Team Broke-AF. I shop sales, I make do with things that arenāt AS nice or are ānice for the priceā to cover up the fact that my walls are a ghastly puce color. (My entire apartment is puceāand itās disgusting). Mostly that involves tapestries, and string lights that pull focus from the shitty wall color, but still, it works for me, for now.
Another thing Iām good at is playing room Tetris. My roommate benefits from this greatly. Sheās got an ASTOUNDING amount of stuff in her room thanks to me and figuring out how to fit furniture so its functional and looks good. Iām currently in the planning phases of doing the same to my bedroom, which is my current workspace. (It has a door and keeps my needy cat out of my lap.) Right now, it aināt cute in here, but once it is, and is decorated thereāll be a workspace tour.
The thing Iām AMAZING at, however, is keeping myself organized. I have a bit of an obsession with organizational things (pads, planners, pens, markers, post-its, tabs, etc). I have an A5 size planner and 2 desk pads that I use to keep myself organized right now, because due to various conditions my memory is shitty. I need something in pretty much every direction I look telling me what I need to be doing at any given moment, or how MANY things I need to be doing.
Example: I have to work on five posts for Facebook, so on each pad/planner page I have five circles that need to be filled in. Once something is doneāI can use my cool pens to fill in the dot.
Iāve also been making planner pagesā¦simple ones, but planner pages nonetheless. Ones more suitable to what I need in my planner (daily stuff as well as writing stuff). I might offer them when I get ones that look nice. Who knows?
What I DO know is, Iām good at keeping myself on task, and I think Iād like to help others keep on task as well, especially others who are motivated by similar things I am (Iām a sucker for sticker charts).
So, Iāll probably get working on a post for next week with more information on how I keep organized. For now, have some pictures of my planner, my desk-pads and one of my planner insert books.
Having a āwant listā is nice, but Iāve also learned itās a good idea to keep a running āneed listā. To be honest, I have two of these.
Ā The first āneed listā that I keep is really a grocery list āwith a few more thingsā on it. Ā These are the items that I would pick up on a regular weekly shopping run. Ā I keep the list on the table where I have my coffee in the morning. Ā As I realize I need something from the weekly shop, I put it on the list. Ā Then, when itās āshopping day,ā I can grab the list and Iām ready to go. Ā Iāve kept track of what I need all week long, so Iām set to stop in the store and pick it up. Ā I try to go strictly by the list (though every now and again something else sneaks into my cart) and therefore I manage to avoid a good deal of waste. Ā
Ā The second āneed listā is a list of things that will be wearing out/running out soon. Ā These are the things that I know I need to replace soon, but I donāt absolutely have to replace them right away. Ā They can all be gathered, at once, in a special shopping day or they can be spread out. Ā This list is particularly good for people, like myself, who have āshopping moodsā. When those moods hit, and I feel like I really just need to buy something, I can shop for the items on the list. Ā I know theyāre things that I needāand things that I ultimately intended to purchaseāand I donāt have to feel guilty about making those purchases. Ā It keeps me from impulse buying things that I donāt need, but it also allows me the act of acquiring something when the mood strikes.
Ā The list doesnāt have to be complicated. Ā It also doesnāt have to include anything fancy or out of the ordinary. Ā Iāve learned that when the mood to shop strikes, any purchase I make will help it to pass. Ā Itās the act of going, seeing, selecting, and bringing my purchases home that I need. Ā It doesnāt matter if those purchases are a new shower liner, a pan to replace the not-so-non-stick one that I have in the kitchen, or some new underwear to replace the tattered ones that had to be tossed out. Ā The act of selecting those items and making the purchases will make me feel like Iāve gone shoppingābecause I have. Ā
Ā And the best thing about it, honestly, is that items that come from the need list are guilt-free purchases. Ā Theyāre things I know that I will use and theyāre things that I would have bought any way. Ā Thereās no wasting of money. Ā
Ā Lists, Iāve learned, help me keep control of my impulses. Ā They keep a check on my shopping. Ā And, honestly, they keep me organized. Ā If I keep a list, I always know what I āmeant to getā and I can avoid that annoying habit of ending up with things that I donāt want or need.
Ā The want list is good for my unnecessary-but-desired items, but the need list covers everything else that I will simply have to replace someday. Ā
Ā Just be sure to cross it off the list or erase it when you do buy it. Ā Otherwise, you might very well end up with duplicatesāand nobody needs that. Ā At least, not until you do need them!

Who Said Colour Coding Was Crazy? (And Other Tips For Keeping School StuffĀ Organized)
Hey, Wildflowers! Letās talk about something serious. Thatās right ā weāre talking about colour coding. No, stop giggling. Itās pretty damn serious. To me, anyways. I started colour coding my classes in my first year of University, and my only qualm about this trick is that I didnāt keep it up. Between the hustle and bustle of post-secondary education life, the system totally fell off my radar.ā¦
