A Family Dinner

  It was a strange event you could say. Zack was surrounded by his family and his favourite little cousin Alicia.  Zack and Alicia were four years apart, and growing up didn’t see much of each other, as Zack lived in Windsor, and Alicia lived in Vancouver. Yet every family get together, they were as close as they could be. When Alicia was seven, her family and Zack’s went on a Christmas trip to Disney Land. They would race each other to rides, and laugh at every odd thing. Zack was like the big brother Alicia never had.

Zack was always really focused on Hockey, and whenever her parents would allow, Alicia would fly out and watch him play, even as he grew older, and Alicia thought his team mates grew more attractive, she was his number one fan. In 2009 at the entry level draft, Zack invited her to be with him in Montreal. He was ranked as tenth overall. Zack remembers Alicia fiddling with his tie, as it was crooked, as the twelve pick was called, and then as they were idling chatting, thirteenth was called. ‘Zack Kassian…’ boomed out of the microphone, and Zack stood up and pulled Alicia into a huge hug, before disappearing into the draft day madness.

After that point, Alicia and Zack started to grow apart. He was in buffalo, playing for their AHL team and was so busy all the time. Occasionally, they would be able to catch each other on the phone.  On November 24, 2011, a year and a half after being drafted, she got a phone call, telling her to fly to buffalo, and that he would cover everything. Not even caring that her birthday was in a few days, she packed up a bag and was on her way to the Buffalo. She arrived that night, and ending up just staying at the same hotel as Zack, as none of her family could come out. The following night Zack and the sabres played against the Columbus blue jackets, and Zack registered an assist! Even if the sabres were a team Alicia could care less about she would always support Zack. The next night against the Washington Capitals, Zack scored his first NHL goal.

Alicia flew back to Vancouver after that, and things stayed the same. Distance but still the best of friends! A year passed, and Zack came out to visit Alicia in the summer, and they were the same as they had always been, playing hockey anywhere they could. Alicia, still not the best on skates, as they, had elected to play ball hockey. Yet on February 27th minutes before the trade deadline, Zack was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for Cody Hodgson. Alicia was overwhelmed with joy. He flies in that night and stayed at her family’s house. Alicia went to the first few games at Roger’s Arena and then finally began to focus back on school.

Things didn’t really change when he played here, it was just every few weeks, Alicia and Zack were able to go out for a coffee, or go to the movies, or out for dinner. It wasn’t until Alicia had finally graduated, and Zack stood there and was all smiley for pictures at her house, when he realised that Alicia had grown up. Suddenly Zack didn’t want Alicia around the team, especially few of the younger guys, like Chris, he always had an eye out for her. Zack tried to keep his distance to keep her away from the team because he didn’t want her to grow up. He knew that wouldn’t last for long though.

Then the inevitable happened, one night after a game, Alicia came down to the locker room, while Zack was still busy and happened to run into Chris. Zack had no idea this two had been kind of seeing each other, until he walked out to the parking garage, where Kevin had said he seen Alicia, and saw Alicia and Chris in a much too cosy embracing.  Zack was boiling; he had made it very clear to Chris that Alicia was not allowed near any hockey player he knew. That was at the beginning of the preseason, and Zack hasn’t talked to Alicia since.

Zack finally noticed that she was here, with Chris, they were still together, and he couldn’t even be mad anymore. It was thanksgiving dinner, Zack wanted to know why Alicia would lie to him, why they weren’t close after one fight. He marched over, as Chris left to go to talk to Alicia’s Dad.

“Why?” was all Zack could say.

“What are you talking about?” Alicia turned around, and was her normal sassy self.

“We should go talk in your room.”

“Okay fine,” she sighed, marching up the stairs, Zack followed close behind. Her room was as it had always been a wall with a giant Canucks logo the strips of green and blue under it, and that wall covered in posters. One of everyone, and two of Zack, he felt special. He smiled at it, before she said, “I always get in shit for having two of you, as you are my best friends’ favourite player.”

“Why would she get mad, we are cousins?”

“She doesn’t know that,”

“What? Why?”

“It is the same reason you don’t want me dating Chris, because you are my older cousin, more like brother, and I don’t want her to hurt you and I don’t want you to hurt her. She is my best friend and she means way too much for me to lose her to you.”

“So you know why I am mad at you and Chris,” Zack stated.

“Of course I do, and I considered breaking up with him, and I still am just so we do not have to fight.” Alicia sighed. “And I would have, but Zack, I care about him so much. I mean we’ve been together since August, and I never told you because I didn’t want you to be mad.”

“Since August, what date?”

“August 10th, you had just gone home to Windsor again.” She smiled.

“And now it is October 14th, so you’ve been together for two months, and you never told me.” Zack shouted, a little madder then he should be.

“Do not yell at me.” Alicia spat.

“Sorry, it is just, why? If you told me I wouldn’t have been as mad!” Zack stated, “I just want to keep you safe, and never ever see you hurt again, like you were. Okay when you told me of all those things that had happened to you, I wanted to protect you, like I always have you are a little sister to me and I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

“Okay, but you better tell Chris that because I do not plan on leaving him.” Alicia smiled sunnily, as Zack pulled her into a huge hug.

“You always have gotten your way, haven’t you?”

“Yes, and by the way, my best friend is coming over. You know the one I showed you once, and always talk about?”

“Oh Tayler yea,” Zack smiled, while thinking of how beautiful she was.

“You are going to ask her on a date, because I approve of you two.” Alicia exclaimed.

“I have wanted to do that for a while, I stole her number from your phone, but I didn’t know she had no clue we were cousins.” Zack laughed.

Alicia was about to respond, just as she heard the front door open. “Alicia,” Tayler called out, “Why is Tanman in your house?”

“He is my boyfriend, oh and before you ask how do you know Chris and blah blah, Meet Zack Kassian, my cousin, or more like the older brother I never had.”

“ALICIA! WHY DID YOU NEVER TELL ME? WHY HAVENT WE GONE ON A DATE YET? WHY WOULD YOU! ALICIA!” Tayler yelled at Alicia.

“I am very protective of Zack, and I guess I was waiting for the right moment.” Alicia smiled sunnily, before whispering, “Apparently Zack stole your number from my phone and has been trying to text you.”

Zack suddenly got all flustered, Tayler was looking at him with wide eyes, and both of them just had this feeling were they knew they belonged together.

“Hi Tayler, how are you?” Zack mumbled, full of nervousness.

“Good, great and mad at Alicia all at the same time,” Tayler laughed.

“I know how you feel,” Zack smiled, his toothless smile.

“I can hear you two idiots. Or should I call you love birds.” Alicia winked, before everyone went over to dinner.

  Five years later!

Alicia smiled at a Christmas dinner. Chris and Alicia had had a winter wedding at Roger’s arena, and it was phenomenal. Everyone was at their new place for Christmas Dinner, and not only were Chris and Zack now cousins, Alicia and Tayler were cousins as well.

“Tayler, I knew we would be family one day! No matter if I had to forcefully marry our kids.” Alicia laughed.

“Well if you had never introduced me to Zack, this would have never happened. It could have been sooner.” Tayler muttered.

“I knew what I was doing and how perfect you guys were for each other,”

“That’s how I felt like you and Chris.” Zack stated.

“Oh yea, that why you yelled at him for a week when you found out I was dating him.” Alicia sassed.

“I guess I am more protective then you.” He laughed.
