THE ANIMORPHS I’ve been working on a reimagining of the Animorphs book series. My own alternate reality of what I think would be fun to explore with this team. Keeping the core of the characters alive, but bringing to life things I saw when I started the series as a kid, and the potential I see now. * When I first started the series, I was eight, and I was terrible at reading. No book could hold my attention for long, and I was always getting bored or frustrated. But when I picked up Animorphs, the universe opened to so many possibilities of fun worlds to see and explore through books. Loving Animorphs helped me start reading Harry Potter, and Neil Gaiman books, and then made me interested in working at a Library and a Comic Book store, which I did for many years. It has snowballed so many times over to greater things, I can track it all back to my mom trying 101 things to get me to read, and then finally landing this ragtag group of kids. So when I started rereading the series to see if it was appropriate for my nephew, I got nostalgic and started sketching the characters. Snowballing now to a whole new alt U. * If you dont understand the reference and only remember seeing the weird mid morph book covers, honestly, pick up a copy. Rereading them, looking passed and laughing at some of the dated 1998 pop culture references, and the sometimes simple perspective of junior high kids, there are so many adult themes hidden behind the guise of six 13 year olds. Themes of addiction, abuse, abandonment, suicide, war (obviously), and growing up way too fast. As a kid, so much went over my head. But now reading them as an adult, I can see things I learned in the series as an either year old, and applied to my life without even knowing it. * Thank you @katherineapplegateauthor for being a driving force for why I loved to read as a kid and now! ’The One and Only Ivan’, by Katherine Applegate, tells the story of Ivan, a silverback gorilla, who has been living in captivity at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall. Ivan lives in his glass domain, and is, for the most part, content with his life despite its boredom. With the arrival of Ruby – a baby elephant – at the Big Top Mall, Ivan’s repetitive, humdrum existence is changed forever. When he suffers a devastating loss of one of his friends, and is bound by a promise to them, Ivan sees his ’home’ for what it really is – and consequently hatches a plan to help Ruby escape his fate. In some ways, Ruby is a reflection of what Ivan once was: naïve, innocent, forced into a life alien to the one she should have been living. She is the catalyst for his eyes being opened. Ivan’s natural identity as a gorilla has been warped and twisted into a version that fit human demands; to himself, he is both foreign and familiar. The only remnants of his time in the jungle are blurred, hazy memories that have been long repressed. As his tragic and forgotten past slowly unfolds, so do they. He lives with contented resignation of where life has taken him. Until Ruby arrives, he makes no attempt to escape the prison he’s been living in for 27 years, because it’s all he’s ever known. Ivan’s experience and relationship with humans is complicated: he has seen them be both cruel and kind. He knows not to tar all humans with the same brush. His perspective is a reminder that no matter how kind they can be, the fact remains that they do not fully understand animals, and never will. The book seems to suggest that sometimes, some animals are best left alone to thrive where they will. One of the most distinguishing features of the novel is the fact that each chapter contains one particularly poignant and hard-hitting sentence. It’s very much a children’s story, being an extremely light read and fairly fast-paced. Deep emotion is balanced with humour. It’s a bittersweet tale about friendship and freedom.

131 The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate adapted by James E. Grote dir Dorothy Milne. Originally mounted in 2015 in our season of traumatizing children (Velveteen Rabbit, Lions in Illyria where death of a sibling is discussed at length and then Ivan), The One and Only Ivan was going to be one of our first forays into touring a show. Giggle Giggle Quack toured in the fall of 2018, and Ivan was going to tour in Winter of 2019. Right around the time we were in tech for Frankenstein, Dorothy emailed me out of the blue and asked if I would be interested in doing the tour. I had nothing lined up, I knew the play was great and would be going to a lot of states I had never been to before. So I said yes. I played Mack the owner of the mall who was keeping Ivan the gorilla and Stella the elephant in captivity, and also Bob the dog, a stray who lives in the mall and is Ivan’s friend. There are a whole bunch of Dispatches from the Road I posted about the tour last year. The first two weeks were plagued by a polar vortex in the midwest and 4 named winter storms and sub-zero temps as we drove across the country. Olympia - which is where we were supposed to do 10 shows got hit by two blizzards in 48 hours. So we did the last show we could possibly do on Friday and then flew back to Chicago for two weeks. The second leg of the tour was much easier and ran like clockwork. The book is based on the true story of Ivan the Gorilla, raised in captivity in a mall in Tacoma for 27years, until he was liberated to the Atlanta Zoo, where he lived in a habitat for the remaining 23. We went to the mall and visited the statue of Ivan at the Point Defiance Zoo. I really loved the Pacific Northwest and the tour ended in Modesto, CA so I popped down to LA to see some folks I hadn’t seen in over a decade. I skipped the tour this year to work on a show closer to home. This year they went to Miami. What we’re reading Wednesday 📚 . . We took a break over the holiday and ate slowly reuplpadimh to our regular schedule (adding about 2 things a day til we get to our groove before the break). . . We just finished Odd and the Frost Giants as our morning family read aloud which became a bed time read aloud during the break. We’re bank to reading after breakfast and ate getting ready to start #wishtree by #katherineapplegate as part of our #buildyourlibrarylevel2 things. . . M has been reading #101awesomewomen who changed the world by #Julia Adams 🖤. I really wish I had a book like this when I was growing up! We’re on chapter 2 #womenscientists #womeninventors and I’m walking away so empowered + inspired too 🌟. Many of these women I don’t know about either and M is really loving seeing how strong girls are and how much they’ve contributed (even in the face of adversity, and #learningchallenges ). She’s become so much more motivated to continue her reading path and work hard at her own pace (#capd #dyslexia can really take a toll on a child’s self esteem but this book is really lighting up a Fire to #nevergiveup 🔥). . . I’m so grateful for it. I picked it up at #5below and reminds me of the rebel girls series. I’m planning to pick those up next at some point. This book is 4 chapters divided up by field. . . E to my surprise reread The Sign of the Beaver with Dad (!). He’s my reluctant reader fam so you know how big this is.
