Spent a month emailing the Spanish embassy back and forth to change my name and gender on my passport.

It's great because the Spanish government doesn't require letters from doctors or psychiatrists. This right to self-determination should spread through the world if you ask me.

HOWEVER.

I have been told. today. after 4 weeks. of emails. where they asked me more and more questions.

And more and more forms.

And more and more certificates and proof of address and photo ID and whatever the fuck else.

That I cannot put non-binary as my gender, it has to be male or female.

Have into account, dear person reading this, that that was the first line of my first email and the heading of the ENTIRE THREAD OF EMAILS.

"Request to change name and gender to nonbinary on my passport"

And they tell me now.

Have also into account, dear reader, that this only applies to Spanish people.

Confused yet?

Yes. Had I been born elsewhere and requested a Spanish passport upon fulfilling all requisites to achieve citizenship (don't get me started on the immorality of asking human beings to jump through hoops to get basic rights cos I'll literally fkn scream), I could indeed opt to have my gender as "undefined" ie - non binary on my Spanish passport and ID card.

But, alas, that option does not apply because I was born in Spain.
