“Papa? Where’s my mommy?” Peter asks, brown eyes wide and curious in childlike wonder as he gazes up into Tony’s widened eyes.
Tony swallows harshly, wondering how he’s supposed to tell his toddler that he doesn’t have a mom.
It’s been Tony and Peter for as long as he can remember, a welcome edition to Stark Tower that had Pepper, Rhodey and the rest of the Avengers immediately in love.
“Uh-huh, well!,” Tony laughs nervously, picking up his son to sit him on his lap as he runs a hand over his unruly curls.
“Buddy, do you remember how I told that not all families look the same?” Tony starts softly, watching fondly as the toddler nods immediately.
Tony smiles, wrapping his arms around his boy, “well some families have mommy’s and daddy’s and some have two mommy’s or two daddy’s,” Tony says, looking down at Peter’s serious expression as he muffles a laugh as he watches the boy try to follow along.
“And some families are like ours,” Tony says softly, eyes softening and Peter looks up at him with complete love and affection that Tony can’t help but press a sweet kiss to his chubby cheek.
“They just have one mommy or one daddy, and that’s what you and I are pete, just you and me, you understand?” Tony questions, hesitant to the small boy’s reaction only to sigh softly in relief when the boy accepts his answer as is.
“Jus’ you and me Papa?” Peter mumbles with a smile, his tiny hand coming to rest on his father’s chest where the light blue light of the arc reactor can be seen through the cotton.
“Just us Pete, my little buddy hm?” Tony mutters, tugging a giggly baby into his arms to snuggle, tension leaving his body as he realizes he seems to have moved on from this topic.
“Papa?” Peter interrupts the calm silence after a couple of seconds, unable to keep quiet for any longer.
“Yeah buddy?” Tony hums, running his hand softly over Peter’s back as the younger boy lays his cheek on his father’s chest.
“Unca Steve be my second daddy?” Peter whispers softly, hands prodding and poking at the slightly lifted metal outline of the arc reactor.
Tony’s jaw drops out of view from Peter’s gaze, tugging at Peter’s hand unconsciously as he holds it in his hand.
“Uh. Well Pete, for uncle Steve to be your second daddy, Papa and him would have to be in a relationship bud,” Tony says, huffing a small laugh at the absurd question.
“I know!” Peter pulls away, sitting on Tony’s waist and looking at him with a frown.
Tony muffles a laugh through a cough as he nods as seriously as he can as he watches Peter cross his arms and scowl indignantly.
“Well then Petey Pie, you’d also know that uncle Steve doesn’t like Papa like that” Tony says, half amused and slightly saddened by the admission.
Peter scowls harder, slapping his tiny hands onto his father’s chest with a frown, “Nuh uh!” He cries.
Tony’s eyes widen, about to tug Peter to his chest to hopefully avoid a tantrum before Peter wiggles on his chest.
“Unca Steve was talkin to Unca Bucky an’ say he lubs you!” Peter whines out.
Tony stammers in shock, before immediately launching into a toddler interrogation about when this had apparently happened.
