Disclaimer: I wonât claim this to be a conclusive/definitive analysis of all of the shipâs aspects. Ship dynamics vary depending on which parts of the series/timeline or media types you are looking at. So this is going to be my personal take on it and just a personal interpretation of how I perceive them.
Whether canon provides input on them or not.
If there is one thing fandom - usually - unanimously agrees on, it's that Sora and Jyou are the mom and the dad of the squad. The responsible ones, the voices of reason to keep all the bickering, danger-seeking kids on their toes while having a piece of advice for all of them... Unfortunately, while they are naturally responsible, caring and kind people, their urge to take care of others used to be fueled by familial trauma and the idea that they simply HAVE to act out of obligation. It's a theme for both of them that gets handled in different yet similar ways - but I'm already getting ahead of myself.
Despite their parental status, Jyou and Sora unfortunately do not share a lot of screen time together. When thinking of them, there are usually three to four key moments that come to mind; most famously, there is their Bakemon adventure in which Sora tries to encourage Jyou to be the leader he thinks he has to be after being asked to do so by Gomamon - it's one of their first key scenes, because Jyou's persistence is what gets them out of a pinch eventually. And even though Sora was a little bit wary of Jyou's capabilities at first, her kindness, her belief in him get them that far in the first place. It's all mostly played for comic relief reasons - and so do a lot of their interactions in Adventure, oftentimes joined by Mimi, as the girls simply love to come together to tease Jyou at various points in the series.
So what we can tell - despite their presumably "adult" status in the group, they have a rather light-hearted bond that also allows them to be a little silly at times. On the other hand, we also learn that their sense of obligation is what drives them both towards their darkest moments... Jyou struggles with his sense of leadership and doesn't know his place at first, living to study to become a doctor to please his father - as opposed to Sora, who tries to rebel against her mother, not wanting to be reduced to become an iemoto, thinking that she's not even as kind as everyone assumes her to be. She feels responsible to save the world and is afraid of failure - just like Jyou is until he realizes that there are things only he can do. Even if he may not be the leader he thought he should be, even if becoming a doctor seems like a struggle, he understands that he has a choice to support in the best way he can - and it's this realization that helps him to become the senpai that Sora needed and, alongside Yamato, to pull Sora out of her own darkness. At least temporarily.
Because while Jyou does have his setbacks, he keeps pursuing to become a doctor, finding his own path alongside being a Chosen Child and senpai for everyone - despite having the reputation of always being busy. Meanwhile, Sora has various ups and downs on her way to figure herself out and struggles A LOT HARDER to juggle everything: her sense of femininity, whether she wants to maintain her group-mom status or pull herself back from everyone, whether she needs to abandon her self as a Chosen Child completely, whom she really loves, while also figuring out whether eventually becoming an iemoto was the right choice after all...
One cannot help but wonder: Maybe it would have helped Sora to stay in touch with Jyou more after all. In Tri, we still saw Jyou - as depicted above - being rather (physically) protective of Sora (once again, alongside Mimi), whereas Sora was the one texting Jyou about Gomamon while he was not around, thus still displaying the mutual care. But, at the point of Kizuna/The Beginning, we don't even know when they talked the last time...
Whether I think why and how theyâd work.
I actually believe Jyou is among the most plausible partners for Sora - potentially at least. I really do believe that their personalities would match incredibly well once they've settled down a little - meaning, once Jyou has settled into his work-life for a while and Sora is at least a little bit closer to figuring out that she likes designing clothes more than arranging flowers. In sum - once they started to CHILL OUT a little bit more into adulthood, I feel like their mutually caring attitudes could result in a very loving, understanding relationship. Yes, they can both be stingy and pedantic and one might argue that they're actually too similar in this regard to really play off of each other romantically, to keep things exciting - but I still think that they need a lot of stability and assurance in their lives. Knowing that there is someone they can always rely on. Plus, they both tend to just naturally give advice and may be capable of, subconsciously, telling the other exactly what they need to hear in order to snap out of more negative tendencies.
Jyou in particular develops more healthy approaches towards his own limitations, he DOES become more relaxed and calm - and Sora seems to need a lot more validation than she was ever capable of admitting. And... Admittedly, even if they may only date for a while, I feel like that period alone could be incredibly assuring for both of them, feeling that mutual love and appreciation, still being wanted and needed. And even if they broke up at some point - I cannot ever see bad blood remaining between them. They would always, ALWAYS remain on friendly terms, because in my opinion, their natural kindness towards each other was NEVER out of obligation.
Whether Iâd prefer them as platonic or romantic ship.
Generally, I'm thinking very fondly of Jyoura, they give a somewhat fuzzy, comfy feeling, even if their lack of interaction really bothers me. Initially, Sora used to be a character who had a bond with nearly EVERY Chosen Child, and her being slowly but steadily removed from the team really makes it hard to estimate her level of closeness to everyone. I do believe that they can be incredibly good for each other and I like to joke about them being in a little poly bond with Mimi, because at this point, I feel like Mimi is the connective element between them that could make a lot of things right. She is the extroverted force to their introverted tendencies and since they all adore each other a lot... Why shouldn't that work? That aside, I simply appreciate Jyoura as a dynamic, even though I don't actively ship them, I will always support anyone who does depict them, because it's usually in very loving, mutually supportive ways.

Any idea if Sora x Jo has a generally-accepted portmanteau-style ship name? Iâve recently decided I ship them or at least like the idea of them being together, and Iâve been calling them âTeam Mom x Team Dadâ in my head but I donât think a search for that would yield many relevant results. ^^;
I have also recently decided that I like this ship! They really are the mom and dad of the group, and would make such a soft couple. They make me smile. The two most responsible people getting together and taking care of their adopted children together and keeping them out of trouble, I can'ttttt. :)
When I tag Sora x Jou, I call them Joura (or Jyoura or Joura, depending on how you spell Jou I suppose) but I have no idea if this is an official or universally accepted ship name? Sounds good in my head though! đ¤ˇ

Yamato inhaled deeply through his nose, letting his body wake up at its own pace. There was no rush to turn off the alarm before it woke Taichi up, since it was a Saturday.
Yamato opened his eyes when he felt Taichiâs arm slip from around his waist as Taichi turned to face the wall. Ever since that first nightâfour nights ago, now, Yamato musedâhe had gotten more comfortable with the idea of sharing a bed with another person. He wouldnât admit it out loud, but he seemed to sleep better with Taichi next to him. He vaguely recalled having read somewhere that men slept more soundly if they were snuggling with someone.
Yamatoâs face reddened.
Not that he and Taichi were snuggling! They were just sharing a bed with their limbs occasionallyâaccidentallyâtangling around the other. Not very often, Yamato assured himself.
Shaking his head clear of those thoughts, Yamato edged his feet off the bed and sat up.
âGetting up already?â
Yamato started at the voice behind him. He turned to look at the sleepy brunet still cuddled under the duvet.
âSorry, did I wake you?â Yamato asked in lieu of answering.
âNah.â Taichi said, throwing the covers off himself and stretching his arms above his head. âI was just waking up, too. I thought youâd have a bit more of a lie-in, though, since you donât have school.â
Yamato shrugged, standing. âYeah, but Iâm not sleepy anymore, and some of the others have work and we agreed to have breakfast together, right?â
âRight.â Taichi swung himself to sit upright on the bed. âBut Sora will be the first to leave and that wonât be until ten. What time is it, anyway?â Taichi scanned the floor for his mobile, though Yamato already had his in his hand.
Yamato frowned at his phone. âItâs already eight thirty.â
âYou mean âonly,â right?â
âNo, no.â Yamato replied, distracted by the sound of the shower running upstairs. âSoraâs already up and getting ready. I should get started on breakfast.â
Taichi rolled his eyes, though his brain was already conjuring up a mischievous plan. Slyly, he reached out to snag one of Yamatoâs wrists, bodily pulling the blond onto the bed.
âHey!â Yamato yelped, landing heavily, face first, on Taichi.
Taichi grunted from the impact, but then chuckled. âGuess I didnât think this through.â He wheezed out.
Yamato hid his chuckle in Taichiâs shoulder before rolling off to the side. âServes you right.â
âGuess so.â Taichi acquiesced before the two lapsed into silence.
The sun was streaming in through the thin curtain, though, in the late-September morning, it wasnât glaringly bright.
The males contemplated the ceiling in silence, neither really thinking much. They were content to just lie there, not doing anything and not feeling the need to.
A quiet knock on the door snapped both out of their stupor.
âGuys?â Sora poked her head in cautiously. âOh, you are up.â She opened the door a bit wider. âI thought I heard sounds from here. Anyway,â she looked directly at Yamato. âI just wanted to let you know that I can take care of the cooking this morning.â
âWhat?â Yamato sat up. âNo, no, itâs fine; I can do it, since Iâm up.â
Sora frowned. âBut youâve been cooking every day and youâll continue to do so. I can do breakfasts at weekends.â
âBoth?â Yamato offered a compromise.
Sora eyed him for a bit before smiling. âOkay.â She started moving out of the room. âIâll get some stuff set up and you can join me whenever.â She caught Yamatoâs nod before the door closed.
Yamato stood again, moving away from the bed lest Taichi try pulling him in again. Not that the bed wasnât comfortable or that it hadnât been nice to just be, but there was breakfast to be made.
âIâll go for a quick shower whilst you two are busy cooking.â Taichi announced, bouncing off the bed.
âShotgun!â Yamato called, racing out before Taichi had even straightened fully.
âHey!â Taichi ran after Yamato, only to have the bathroom door slam and lock in his face. Taichi stuck his tongue out at the piece of wood, then slunk back into his room to dig for clothes.
Yamato walked out of the bathroom a few minutes later, still in his borrowed night clothes, but with a cleaner face and teeth. He smirked at Taichi as they passed in the corridor, only to get a playful slap on the arm from the brunet.
âWhat did Taichi do?â Asked an amused voice as Yamato entered the kitchen.
âHuh?â Yamato blinked at Sora. She had thrown on her red apron and had apparently just finished putting the rice into the cooker.
âYou looked amused by something, so Iâm asking what Taichi did.â She clarified, moving to the fridge.
âOh.â Yamato made a mental note to try to reply in more than one syllable words or sounds from now on. Sora seemed to let it go, though, as she laughed and muttered something about âboys.â
Smiling, Yamato grabbed his own apron and started helping Sora with the eggs and vegetables.
They worked in silence for a minute before Sora spoke: âWe havenât really told you about ourselves, have we?â Yamatoâs attention snapped to her, eyes wide. âI mean, general things like how old we are and where weâre from.â
âYou donât have toâŚâ
Sora grinned. âItâs not like youâre forcing it out of me.â Her face softened. âI want you to get to know me better. Do we want miso soup?â
Yamato was taken aback by the abrupt change in the topic, but then he shook his head in reply.
âMy favourite colourâs red.â Sora said, changing topics abruptly again, as she put the packets of instant soup back into the cupboard.
Yamato wasnât sure if he should reply by stating his favourite colour. Did he even have one anymore? He had in the past, before his life filled with worries and stress.
âI grew up on the outskirts of town.â Sora continued, not waiting for Yamatoâs favourite colour. âMy mother runs a flower business there, with greenhouses and huge gardens and all. Sheâs the fourth generation of daughters to take over the business. As you heard, I didnât want to do that, so I ran away. I was 16 at the time, and that was six years ago.â
âYour mother didnât come looking for you?â
Sora shook her head, checking on the rice. âI have a cousin who was more than willing to take over, so Iâm not a huge loss to my mother or aunt. And Iâm happy here.â Sora turned to smile at Yamato. âIâm happy with my current life.â
Yamato smiled at the eggs, uncertain about meeting such genuine joy he knew the mahogany eyes held.
Sora busied herself with the condiments for a while. âAs a bartender, I get to hear so many stories from my customers. Some bitch about their days or bosses or spouses, but othersâgenerally the older onesâgive valuable life advice.â Sora turned her full attention to Yamato. âThe most valuable can be summarised by: have a close group of friends to share your troubles and smiles with.â
âSeems simple.â Yamato mumbled, still keeping his eyes on the eggs even though they were fine on their own.
âIt sure does, but getting there is where most people run into trouble.â
âMorning!â Jou called, walking in to the kitchen.
âGood morning.â The cooks replied in unison.
âFoodâs almost ready, so go wake up the others, please.â Sora said, as the rice cookerâs setting clicked from âcookâ to âwarmâ.
âSure.â Jou nodded, heading back out.
âDo I get food yet?â Taichi asked, walking into the kitchen whilst towelling his hair dry.
âHuh, so thatâs how. Interesting.â Yamato commented, glancing at Taichi from the corner of his eye before turning to pull out plates.
Taichi lowered the towel around his neck. He waited a few seconds then rolled his eyes and sighed. âElaborate!â
âTaichi, donât yell.â Sora scolded, unplugging the rice cooker and taking it to the coffee table in the living room. Chuckling, Yamato followed with the plates and utensils.
âYamato...â Taichi whined, in a much quieter voice than before.
Returning to the kitchen, Yamato grabbed the eggs and vegetables. âI had been wondering how you get your hair to stick out all over, but I guess that method of drying it answers that question.â
Taichi stuck his tongue out at the blondâs back, tailing him into the living room.
âThe faucet in the second bathroom upstairs is doing that thing again.â Meiko announced, ushering Koushiro and Hikari into the living room. âJou and Mimi are fixing it, which is why itâs taking them so long.â
âWhat thing?â Yamato asked.
Meiko opened her mouth to answer, only to blush and change her words hurriedly: âOh, sorry everyone: good morning!â Everyone laughed, Meiko joining in after a second.
âMorning.â Yamato replied, echoed by the others. âWhat thing?â
âThe tap is kind of loose at times and squirts water from the base.â
âOh.â Yamato frowned. It didnât sound too good.
âItâs okay.â Sora assured, starting to spoon rice onto Koushiroâs plate. âJou and Mimi are amazing at tag-teaming the fix.â
âYes, we are!â Mimi announced, stopping to raise one arm into a bicep flex and grabbing said bicep with her hand. She winked before moving further in with Jou in tow. âThe food looks great.â She pecked Meiko on the cheek and gave Hikari a one-armed squeeze in greeting.
Once everyone had served themselves and settled onto the floor, Sora asked about everyoneâs plans. Herself, Jou, and Mimi would be working, but everyone else had the day off.
âWeâre going shopping; Yamato needs stuff.â Taichi informed through a mouthful of food. Sora gave him a disapproving look, but acknowledged his answer with a nod.
âI donât, reallyâŚâ Yamato frowned at his food. âI can manage until I get access to my money in half a year.â
âSo you have some money?â Jou asked.
âWell, yeah, but when I left⌠I guess Natsukoâmy motherâfroze or blocked my account or something like that. I tried getting some money out earlier, but the card was refused. Myââ He swallowed heavily. âMy father has a savings account set up for me. It was supposed to be for university, butâŚâ
âItâs alright!â Taichi said, grinning. âIâll provide for you until then.â This caused Yamato to blush and everyone else to snort into their food.
âHowâs the job-hunting going?â Mimi asked Taichi, recovering from his previous statement.
âAlright.â Taichi replied, chewing thoughtfully before elaborating: âIâll hear back from the park maintenance position next week. Has your boss said anything?â Taichi turned his attention to Jou at the last part.
Jou pushed his glasses up his nose and licked his lips. âActually, he did ask me about you and your work ethic. I did put in a good word for you, since I do know youâre dedicated to your job. He looked like he was seriously contemplating it.â
Sora smiled. âThat sounds promising.â
A grin spread across Taichiâs face as well. âYeah, I would actually prefer that one, since winter as a park employee could get cold.â
Hikari sighed. âI wish I was old enough to workâŚâ
âDonât worry.â Mimi said brightly, placing a hand on the younger brunetteâs shoulder. âYouâll be 15 in a few monthsâ time, so you can start looking for work then.â
âI donât knowâŚâ Taichi started, but was interrupted by a glare from his sister. âI mean, you might want to think about education first. You donât really want to be stuck in dead-end jobs like me for the rest of your life.â
âEducation requires money, though, which is something we donât have.â Hikari countered quietly but firmly. She reached out to start clearing away the empty plates.
âUnless youâre being home-schooled.â Yamato noted, passing his plate into Taichiâs outstretched hand. âI could start teaching you and Koushiro a few things at home, if youâd like.â
All movement stopped and everyoneâs eyes turned to the blond. Yamato shifted uncomfortably in the silence and spotlight, but it was thankfully broken by Hikariâs bright:
âReally? Youâd honestly be willing to home-school me?â
Yamato shrugged, a smile tugging at his lips. âIf you want, Iâd be happy to.â
âOkay!â Hikariâs grin widened and her brown eyes sparkled. âWeâll need to buy some notebooks and pencils.â
âIâll give you some money for that.â Sora smiled as Jou nodded his agreement.
Mimi and Meiko exchanged nods. âWeâll chip in, too.â
âThanks, everyone.â Hikari said.
âRight.â Taichi stood, pile of plates in his hands. âNow that thatâs settled, whoâs helping me with dishes?â
âI will.â Meiko volunteered, also standing and grabbing the rice cooker and pan from the table.
With Taichi and Meiko doing the dishes, Sora and Jou went to get dressed for work. Yamato, Hikari, and Koushiro occupied the three showers; the downstairs one, the shared one upstairs, and the master bedroomâs en suite.
About half an hour later, everyone was gathered in the foyer, putting on shoes and jackets.
âSora needs to leave now and Iâll be walking with her, so make sure to lock up properly, okay?â Jou said, holding the door open for his girlfriend.
âOh, damn, that reminds me.â Taichi turned, almost knocking into Yamato, who was standing behind him on one foot, trying to pull a shoe onto the other foot, whilst avoiding Mimi who was throwing a coat around her shoulders. âYamato remember to remind me to get you a copy of the key.â
âIf I remember to.â Yamato replied, distracted.
Echoes of âbyeâ rang out as Jou and Sora left.
âItâs cute that heâs still walking her to work.â Hikari noted, dressed in a thin light pink jacket.
Mimi snorted. âOh, please, they havenât been going out that long; of course heâs âstillâ walking her to work. Honeymoon phase.â She winked at the younger girl, opening the door and stepping out.
The rest of the group followed her out, noting the cool autumn breeze.
âHow long have they been together?â Yamato asked, walking with Taichi to the gate.
âAbout a year, now.â Mimi answered from behind them, followed by the two youngest.
âOnly?â
âJou only joined us three years ago.â Taichi clarified. He held the gate open as everyone filed through.
âOh.â Yamato was about to say more, though he wasnât sure what. Thankfully, he was spared the need to think of something.
âRight,â Mimi said, looking down the street. âI have some errands to run before I have to get to work, so you all enjoy shopping.â
Another chorus of âbyeâs sounded as the group split again.
âItâs quite a long walk to the city centre, but we usually avoid taking buses if we can.â Taichi explained, leading the way down the street in the opposite direction to Yamatoâs school.
Yamato nodded, knowing their money situation. Though, had they had the money to spare, Yamato would have preferred to walk anyway; the weather was good and it was relaxing listening to Taichi chatter on about mundane things, with Meiko or Hikari making an occasional comment. Koushiro, as usual, stayed silent, hand secured tightly in Hikariâs.
Yamato had really missed having a normal life; hanging out with friends and not having to worry about anything. His fatherâs lung cancer diagnosis had come two years ago and, since then, Yamato had been constantly stressed. He had pushed away most of his friends from school, only two close ones remaining now.
Yamato snapped out of his thoughts at an elbow to his arm. Blue eyes met brown.
âAlright?â Taichi asked quietly, mindful of the girls talking behind them.
An affirmation got stuck in his throat, so Yamato just nodded. He swallowed and added: âJust thinking.â
âDonât.â Taichi smiled, nudging him again. âLifeâs a lot simpler if you donât dwell on things too much.â
Yamato rolled his eyes, a smile forcing itself onto his face. âI donât know if I should be taking advice from the likes of youâŚâ
âHey.â Taichi threw a playful glare at the blond, before both burst out laughing. The girls and Koushiro gave the pair weird looks, but neither teen could explain why, exactly, they were laughing, so they didnât.
âSo weâre going for clothes, mainly?â Meiko asked, picking up her pace to join the boys at the front.
âYeah, some everyday clothes and then winter stuff. Seriously, though, Yamato.â Taichi said, turning to the blond. âHow were you planning on surviving winter with what you have?â
Yamato frowned at his feet. âI was planning on getting a job, remember? And itâs not like I really thought the whole thing throughâŚâ
âThatâs understandable.â Meiko assured, preventing Taichi from picking a fight. âSora said something along the same lines when she ran awayâthat itâs not something you really plan on doing, necessarily.â
âJou had it all planned.â Taichi noted.
Meiko threw him a look. âBut heâs Jou.â
Taichi chuckled, nodding in agreement. âYeah, I guess I didnât really plan my escape all the way through, either.â
âAnd you had more than yourself to worry about.â Hikari reminded cheekily.
Taichi stopped, letting Hikari and Koushiro catch up. He threw an arm around his sisterâs neck, giving her a gentle noogie. âOh hush, you.â Hikari giggled and squirmed out of his hold, moving to Koushiroâs other side, using him as a shield.
Meiko chuckled at the siblingsâ antics, then turned to Yamato. âI feel a bit bad for you; Jou was able to move out of Taichiâs room and into Soraâs, but we donât really have any spare beds left for you to move to when you get annoyed with Taichi.â
âHey!â Taichi barked. He shoved his hands into his cargo trouserâs pockets and pouted. For all of a few seconds.
âSo you and Jou were roommates?â Yamato asked as Taichi got over his pouting and joined the front again, walking next to Yamato.
âYeah.â Taichi threw Meiko a look, past Yamato. âYou should have felt bad for me, you know. And now you should feel bad for Sora having to put up with him.â
Yamato rolled his eyes at Taichiâs statement, then he frowned and bit his lip, glancing at Meiko out of the corner of his eye. âWhaâI know itâs a bit rude to ask, but⌠What if things donât work out between them?â
Meiko smiled reassuringly. âThen Hikari and Jou will swap rooms; it wonât be a problem. Besides, Sora and Jou seem to get along well enough and they wonât get tired of seeing each other because theyâre both working most of the time, and sharing a room is about the only time they have to spend together.â
Yamato nodded. âDo you mind me asking how long you and Mimi have been together?â
âOh, I donât mind.â Meiko shook her head, dark hair flapping around. âItâs been 12 years now; since our late teens. It wasnât easy moving in together almost immediately, but we worked through our differences whenever we had them.â
âTry to avoid getting on the wrong side of Mimi.â Taichi commented. Yamato had almost forgotten he was there. He threw a glance over his shoulder, to make sure the two youngest were still with them. They were. âSheâs great most of the time, but can get very bitchy very quickly, if you say or do the wrong thing.â
âAnd what are some of these wrong things?â Yamato asked him as Meiko covered up a chuckle with a cough.
Taichi shrugged. âI donât know; it varies.â
âGreat.â Yamato mumbled flatly.
âDonât worry; Mimiâs not easy to annoy.â Meiko reassured him. âEven though Taichi makes it look very easy.â
Taichi leaned forward so he could see Meiko on Yamatoâs other side. He stuck his tongue out at her and she retaliated in kind. Taichi grinned, then looked forward again.
A few minutes later had Taichi grabbing Yamatoâs wrist and taking off at a run, dragging the surprised blond behind him.
âThereâs the store!â Taichi announced, picking up his pace.
âTaichi, wait!â Yamato stumbled, balance off from the pulling and surprise take-off.
âNo waitingânow.â
âBut we have to wait for the others, too.â Yamato finally managed to get his feet under him properlyâonly to crash into Taichiâs back as the other stopped abruptly. âOw.â
âSorry.â Taichi muttered, turning to look at the rest of their group. âHurry up, guys!â
Whilst they were waiting, Yamato took time to inspect their surroundings. They were standing on a busy road, surrounded by tall buildings, as was typical of most Japanese cities. A few smaller streets ran off from the main road. In one corner stood a large building with a yellow sign reading âTreFac Style.â Treasure Factory was a chain of thrift storesâcheap and with a huge selection.
âLetâs go in, then.â Taichi said, snapping Yamato out of his inspection. The others had caught up and were now leading the way into the store. Taichi leaned closer to whisper to Yamato: âItâs lucky we have Meiko with us. Her and Sora are really good at finding the best clothes here and they have great fashion sense. Mimi does too, but she tends to forget that sheâs shopping for someone other than herself. Jou refuses to come, claiming he gets anxiety attacks from how full it is.â
Upon entering the store, Yamato could only blink at how crammed full the place indeed was. True to Taichiâs words, Meiko seemed to know what she was doing, as she was eagerly waving Yamato over. Hikari and Koushiro had rushed off somewhere, probably to the small school supply section in the back.
âDo you have a specific style of clothing, or can I pick whatever?â Meiko asked as Yamato and Taichi got within hearing range.
Taichi answered before Yamato could: âPick whatever you think heâll look good in.â He turned to Yamato with a grin. âTrust her.â Meiko nodded in agreement. Yamato shrugged in reply, never having really cared about what he wore, other than just looking presentable.
Meiko grinned, diving into the muddle of clothing. Taichi spent most of his time looking for the most ridiculous clothes he could find and trying to slip them into Yamatoâs âto try onâ pile. At first, the blond would just roll his eyes and put the clothes back on their racks. However, after the third trip to the changing booth, he let Taichi slip a hideous Hawaii shirt into his pile and he didnât put it back.
âTaichi!â Meiko yelled as Yamato walked out in the brightly coloured garment. Taichi, on the other hand, had burst out laughing, clapping his hands. Yamato was laughing, but his face was also coloured in embarrassment as he retreated back into the booth.
Meiko shook her head in a disappointed manner as Yamato walked out in his normal clothes. Then the three continued browsing, Meiko piling even more clothes into Yamatoâs arms. The blond wasnât sure how she found them all so quickly.
âTaichi, you put that down.â Meiko warned, eyes narrowed at the brunet holding a purple wig. She caught movement out of the corner of her eye. âYamato!â The yell startled the blond so that he dropped a black, glittery vest. âI canât believe this: you too? Donât encourage him!â
Chuckling, the teenagers let up the game of finding the most ridiculous clothes or accessories. They still continued to point out some of the weirder garments they chanced upon, but no longer sought them out. Or tired them on, as was Yamatoâs case.
Almost two hours later, the group of five were out of the store, carrying three bags of clothing. Most were for Yamato, but the others had managed to find some good deals, too. Hikari was clutching a cylindrical, fabric pencil case in her hand. The case was a bit battered, but Hikari had fallen in love with the picture on it: it was of a strange-looking cat, mostly white, with yellow gloves and an abnormally long tail. Taichi had tried insisting that dinosaurs were cooler, but, with a lifetime of practise, the young girl had skilfully ignored him.
âAre you two hungry?â Meiko asked the two youngest.
âI am.â Taichi informed her, eyes flying to a smaller side-street, where he knew good food stalls to be. Meiko ignored him.
âNo.â Hikari shook her head, mimicked by Koushiro. âBut I need to use the restroom.â
âOf course.â Meiko smiled, opening the bag she was carrying. âPop the pencil case in here and weâll leave the stuff with the boys.â Hikari did so and Meiko handed the bag to Taichi. The girls then left to search for the nearest public bathroom.
âIâll go grab a snack.â Taichi said, itching to run off to the nearest food stallâone of his favourites in this part of the city. âYou want anything?â He asked Yamato, who shook his head. ââKay, Iâll be right back.â And he was off.
Yamato stood on the side of the street, a bag hanging from each hand. He shifted from one foot to the other and glanced at the boy standing on his right. They were alone.
âUm, I never really properly introduced myself to you, did I?â Yamato asked Koushiro. âMy nameâs Yamato Ishida. Iâm 17 and in my final year of high school.â
No acknowledgement.
âHow old are you?â
Koushiro watched a mother pushing a stroller past them, but did nothing to indicate he had even realised Yamato was speaking to him.
âI know Hikariâs 14. Are you the same age, Koushiro?â
Still no answer.
âWhatâs your favourite colour?â
Nothing.
Yamato sighed, looking around the street that was getting more crowded as the morning turned to noon. âKoushiro?â Yamato tried again, but still the boy didnât even acknowledge the name. âI promised to teach Hikari some maths and other subjects. Would you be interested in learning, too?â
Koushiroâs silent treatment was really starting to sting. Yamato knew the boy had problems socialisingâeven with Taichiâbut it still hurt. More so when Koushiro immediately acknowledged Taichi upon his return. The boy didnât say anything, no, but his eyes found Taichi and his posture relaxed a fraction.
âThe girls arenât back yet?â Taichi asked once he was within hearing range. Yamato shook his head in reply and Taichi shrugged, offering Koushiro one of the skewered fishcakes he had bought. Koushiro shook his head, so Taichi made the same offer to Yamato. Yamato, too, shook his head and Taichi shrugged, biting off a corner.
âUm.â The three males turned to look at Meiko, who had just returned with Hikari. âWe were thinking that it might be best to take the bus back, since we have so much stuff to carry and weâve been walking so much.â
Taichi shrugged, dropping his now-empty skewer into the nearest bin. âI donât mind either way.â
âMaybe the three of you could take the bags home on the bus and Taichi and I will walk?â Yamato tried, knowing that saving even the few hundred yen of his and Taichiâs bus fares would help.
âYou sure?â Meiko asked, taking the bags from Yamatoâs hands. The blond nodded and Meiko smiled. âOkay. Weâll see you two at home, then.â Waving their goodbyes, the trio started towards the nearest bus stop.
âSee ya.â Taichi said, not really caring whether they heard. He bit into another fishcake and offered the last one to Yamato again. âYouâll need the energy. Or something. I got it for you, anyway, soâŚâ Yamato took it, turning away to hide the happiness in his eyes.
The two walked and ate in leisurely silence, making their way through the busy streets. It wasnât until they turned onto a less crowded road that Taichi spoke:
âWhatâs wrong?â
âHuh?â Yamato snapped out of his stupor. He took a few moments to blink at the ground he had been staring at. He chewed on the wooden skewer, thinking back and realising he had no idea what heâd been thinking about.
âWhatâs wrong?â Taichi repeated, since Yamato wasnât speaking. âI mean, not now, but earlier you looked like something was bothering you. What was it? Something I can help with?â
Yamato frowned, still not looking at his companion. âEarlier, when?â He asked, skewer hanging out of the side of his mouth.
âWhen I went to get a snack. I came back and you seemed a bit down. Did something happen? Did someone say something to you?â
âOh.â
Taichi frowned as they walked along. He had already learned that Yamato was shit at elaborating, but this was worse than shit. âSeriously, did someone say something to you? Who was it?â Taichi looked over his shoulder, as if they were still on the same street or as if the person would announce themselves.
âNo one said anything to me.â Yamato mumbled, eyes still glued to the asphalt.
Taichiâs head whipped back to the blond. âThen what happened?â
Yamato lifted a shoulder in an indifferent shrug. âThatâs just it.â
The brunet stopped, head cocked to the side. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âIt means just that.â Yamato replied, slowing to let Taichi catch up again.
Letting out a huge sigh, Taichi draped himself over Yamato from behind. âWill you stop being so cryptic!â Taichi whined, swinging Yamato back and forth bodily.
âTaichi, stop.â Yamato snapped, pulling at the arms wrapped around his chest. âYouâre being an idiot in publicâstop.â
Taichi let go, moving to walk next to Yamato. âExplain, then, and I wonât do it again.â
Yamato rolled his eyes at the threat, though he relented as he didnât want a repeat of earlier. âI mean that Koushiro wasnât talking to me at all, even though I asked him something and tried to talk.â Realising he sounded rude, Yamato hurriedly added: âI know that he has trouble socialising, but I just thought that he might at least answer one question or something. Itâs not really a big deal, but I just wanted to try talking to him for a bit.â
Through Yamatoâs rambling, Taichi had kept a contemplative look on his face and when he spoke, it was with clear deliberation: âHe doesnât talk a lot normally, but even less so when weâre out in public. Itâs not just you; he hasnât said a word to me eitherâeverâwhen weâve been out. He might reply with one-word answers if Hikari asks him something, but sometimes even she gets the silent treatment when weâre out.â Taichi smiled reassuringly. âDonât worry about it.â
Yamato nodded, though he wasnât convinced; Koushiro hadnât even acknowledged him. He started at the feeling of another hand in his. He met with a pair of brown eyes as the hand gave a squeeze. âGive it time.â

Fandom Shipping Polls - Sora Takenouchi Shipping Analysis (Poll I + Poll II)
As pointed out in the main post, every single Chosen Child will get their individual analysis post to check on the status of the current popularity of their ships. With that out of the way, letâs take a look at Sora, shall we! Â
The overall results / spreadsheet
Disclaimer: As the âSomeone from 01/02âł and âOthersâ options from poll 1 and the âSomeone from 01/02âł option from poll 2 have been excluded from the final analysis due to redundancy reasons and all results were culminated in another âfinal countâ, the results will not be 1:1 to what the polls look like:
Overall votes: 107 (approx. 84 in sum after the exclusion), the main poll got 78 votes, the secondary poll got 29 votes.
The âOthersâ choice in the main poll received 5% (approx. 4 votes) and 7% (approx. 2 votes) in the secondary poll. The comments/tags did not specify any preferences here (aside from characters that were already part of the main choices).
Ship Analysis
1st place: This is the interesting part - as it also includes a tiny bit of bias overall. While the numbers suggest that Taichi (32%) won the poll over Yamato (31%) by the tiniest bit of advantages (and also led the main poll for the majority of the time), tumblr STILL displays both Taichi and Yamato as winners (see graphic below). And while the overall numbers even everything out in favour of Taichi once again, please excuse my non-scientific, childish excitement over this outcome by quoting one of the comments in the poll: âSora has two hands.â So we shall go for this result for now and pick the OT3 - as both Taiora and Sorato, obviously, have very valid reasons to be here, which are highly supported by canon in one way or another. Taichi is the âchildhood football friendâ, one complementary soul that went through thick and thin with Sora throughout their adventure, fueling each otherâs development. Yamato is the other complementary soul, mirroring and understanding Soraâs struggles, enabling her to make her own choices for once (in more than one way). And even if canon let her choose one over the other in the end - itâs no surprise that after all this time, both are considered to be the most viable options in their respective fandom corners. Canon itself tried to play it neutral for quite some time now (see the graphic above), even hinting at possibilities of other potential futures (which may or may not be taken with a big grain of salt). Long story short, it would feel wrong not include both of them.
2nd place: After the two top options, there has been quite a gap - but Mimi (18%) proudly claims the honorary second spot now (which, technically would be third place). And it is no surprise that sheâs considered viable - both Sora and Mimi went through quite a development together, with Sora starting off as the steady rock to protect Mimi at first, just for Mimi to grow up to become a steady rock to encourage and support Sora herself, with a looooot of physical closeness and gentle affirmation on both sides.
3rd place: Again, under normal circumstances, Jou (7%) would be part of the âHonorary mentionsâ squad, as he appears to be more of a niche choice - but one that is still held dearly by its respective supporters. Jyoura are widely considered to be âThe Dad and The Momâ of the group and both of them also struggle with their senses of obligation and making choices, which may be the reason theyâre considered compatible.
Honorary mentions: As the choices mentioned above already take away most of the votes, the only niche options worth mentioning here are Meiko (6%) and Daisuke (3%).
âThe 1 vote squadâ: Probably the most niche choices in fandom overall are being represented by Koushiro (1%) and Takeru (1%).
â0 votes go to...â: Hikari, Ken, Miyako and Iori did not receive a single vote in her poll.
Annotations:Â Sora is among the characters who donât have any viable âotherâ choices outside of the main (+ movie) characters. Additionally, she was the character who received the second least votes overall (after Iori), which doesnât give a lot of variety to her results.
What did the other polls say?
Sora is one of the characters who hasnât won any other poll - but did come in second for Yamato (28%) and third for Taichi (16%) and Mimi (13%, tying with Taichi), thus mirroring her own results at least to some degree. Her shipping choices are not as consistent as Taichiâs and Yamatoâs, but still indicate certain preferences, despite the low sample sizes.
In Jouâs poll, she was more of a niche choice and came in fifth (5%, tying there with Koushiro).
Thus, for the majority of the rest, she was merely a niche choice, such as Takeru (2%), Daisuke (2%), Iori (2%), Koushiro (1%) and Miyako (1%).Â
She received 0 votes in the polls for only Ken - and Hikari, so neither of them received a mutual vote, meaning nobody picked Sokari as viable option.
Notable additions / comments / thoughts
Soraâs polls have been quite a matter of extremes - on one hand, she received a comparably low number of votes in general, somewhat mirroring the results of the âMost popular Chosen Children of Adventureâ poll. But that, on the other hand, caused very clear results to happen. Itâs not much of a surprise to see her two most popular and most visible choices compete for first place - and actually kinda succeeding in that in the end. Especially, since the Taiora vs. Sorato debate has been going on for decades already. Thus, Taiorato overshadowed basically every other choice besides Somi and Joumi (and the latter was already comparably niche), resulting in even the less obvious ships not getting much attention at all. Daiora and Someiko can be named as honorable mentions indeed, as the former is having its own little niche in fandom and the latter absolutely had a development basis in Tri. Thus, I really hope to reach a wider audience if I choose to repeat the polls once the fandom is not as quiet as it is right now.
On an interpretative level, Soraâs status as being âthe mom/big sisterâ of the group (as well as a general absence in some pieces of media) may have contributed to her not being as visible in the votes. She may take care of the others in a loving way and is very persistent in doing so, but that may be taken more on a platonic level.
The comments in the tags have only referred to the already mentioned choices (yet the âSora has two handsâ comment deserves special mention once again!). So the âOthersâ option did not reveal any other potentially preferred suitors. This leaves room for speculation, but usually, the option is reserved for OC ships or for when people prefer to not ship a character at all (which will definitely be a future option to include as well!)
