I’ve spoken about several locations around the Marvel Comic Universe over the years, today we’re going to talk about The Ten Realms! What Ar
Jotunheim
On Jotunheim
I have thoughts about Jotunheim, especially since Ive been writing the Jotunheim Arc, (and reading some meta that conviently appeared on my dash) I decided to put some thoughts down.
So we already know that Jotunheim is essentially falling apart(as seen in the Thor art book) because Odin took the Casket of Ancient Winters. And because of this, food and foliage are scarce.
And I've been thinking about how it would look, and of course I referenced media I have already seen to inspire me.
The two movies I think did this concept pretty well was Moana and Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
Using both as a launching point, I believe that taking away the Casket didn't immediately take affect. Much like losing the Heart of Tefiti (Moana) and the hiding of the Crystal (Atlantis) it took at least 1000 years(plus) for the corruption to fully begin eroding major parts of the realm.
In the beginning, it was only the outer parts of Jotunheim.
And then the plants and animals begin getting corrupting.
So they move.
Jotunheim, in its prime, was a HUGE planet.
The kingdom spanned most of the planet.
Until it didn't.
Until the corruption of the planet grows.
And continues to grow.
Until more people start dying.
So they move.
And move.
Until their population, while still a good amount more than Odin would like, is smaller than it was.
Not horrendously smaller, but still enough that its noticeable.
They move into the capital and the towns just surrounding it.
The corruption still hasn't reached them or what's left of the food.
But for how much longer?
Their clothes are durable.
Meant to last for ages.
Fantastic for the adults, but for the children?
Finding enough resources to make clothing isn't impossible, per se, but it's getting harder.
They try not to discourage the children.
Hoping one day the Casket is returned.
The royal family and the rest of the nobles do everything they can to protect the people.
There was no point in keeping class politics, because without the Casket they were all going to die anyway.
They push on, knowing the end might be near.
Using what they have.
Continuing to tell their stories, keeping their oral traditions.
And their weaving.
And their magic.
What they can muster, anyway.
All mages throughout the Nine draw their power from a realm or dimension.
As Jotunheim continues to fall apart, the magic of the Jotnar begins to fade.
Except for the ones that were locked out of the realm.
In hiding.
They couldnt go home in time.
Sent away from the battle.
Away from danger.
The Jotnar are stubborn. They refuse to meet Mistress Death with heads bow low.
They will meet her with the pride of their people.
They will ensure that they kept their culture alive till the very end.
Even if nothing will change.
Unless.
Unless.
Unless someone cares enough.
Nothing is going to get better.
It's not.

This was meant to be meta, but lowkey also became an II Principe intermission.
I know this is about a post of yours from like two years ago, specifically this one,
(https://www.tumblr.com/therese-lokidottir/723225089899970560/i-like-the-jotun-horn-jewelrydecoration-thing-but) where you talk about Jotun clothing possibly being based on Hennin era clothing, and about the pigment coloring of the clothes, I was wondering if there’s a possibility that different colored ice can grown in Jotunheim (like crystals) and maybe they could be broken down and made into a pigment?
I'm not one to think that Jotun clothing itself would be of ice, that was more glorioustidalwavedefendor's idea. Personally I think that Jotunhiem would have some amount of plants and animals to make fabric, and in turn there could be things like stones or seashells that could produce dyes.

So in regards to this post, I was started wondering about Jotunheim before the war. Im pretty sure at this point we're all aware that when colonizers (cough, Odin cough) come through, they steal any precious resources the nation they're invading may have, and leave it pretty much plundered. So, maybe, at one point, Jotunheim had one of the most advanced societies in the Nine Realms, and part of Odin's way of justifying his war campaign was claiming that the Jotun were going to eventually use their technology and take over the Nine Realms (projecting much?). I bet the idea of Jotun being monsters already hammered into the minds of the Asgardians, they totally would've supported it, even if it wasn't true.
Back on my Jotun bs with a new headcanon thingie
So Laufey and Loki both had living beings frozen without ill effects once they got out or were released (Laufey with the Jotunheim beast that was frozen for Norns know how long, Loki with Heimdall)
That ice is like, marginally strong to for a time contain a seasoned Asgardian warrior and a large monster. And if it’s strong it’s also protective, which leads me to the Thor movie script where the Jotuns do summon ice armor on top of their weapons
So, with all that MCU stuff out the way, I return with the idea that Jotuns could totally just freeze themselves in ice and break out later as a last ditch protective measure while still conscious and aware without seemingly any effects of aging or hunger (again, Jotunheim Beast was frozen for Norns know how long and was ready to fight right away)
Visual inspo would be like what Annie in AoT did, which is kinda funny to me bc Ymir, Titans and Giants, etc lol
From "Marvel Studios' The Infinity Saga - Thor: The Art of the Movie"
That snowflake window is absolutely GORGEOUS, oh my goodness! Out of all of the Jotunheim artwork in the book, this one really hit home how glorious and dare I say beautiful Jotunheim was before the casket was taken away. My dancer brain can see it incorporated in a less ominous looking set for the Snow scene in The Nutcracker lol.
Can you just imagine if they had included the intact version of the palace in "What If...?" It would be the perfect setting for our favorite jotun prince!
On another note, El Droide says it kinda reminds her of the one in Allerdale Hall from "Crimson Peak".
