"FLYING OR FALLING II"
by John Park
Born in Seoul and raised in Ohio, John Park has been in Los Angeles since 1997. Park has been showing his work since 2008 and calling himself a career artist since 2012. His Pop Surrealism blend of figures and abstract backgrounds has been applied to murals across the country, while Park has also been evolving his 3D card cardboard art including an impressive array of masks, animal heads, and wearable puppets. In 2015 commercial realtor Matt Crabs hired Park to paint this wall on Main St in El Segundo. Park says that at that time this was the largest wall he had yet painted and while the work was challenging it also provided a breakthrough leading him to ever more impressive feats. @johnparkart/

"PEACEABLE KINGDOM"
by John Park
Dissatisfied with his life, Edward Hicks joined the Society of Friends in 1803 and married a Quaker woman, eventually becoming a Quaker minister. While painting proved lucrative the Friends frowned on ornamental art, but around 1820 Hicks apparently struck on a more acceptable image and painted his first "Peaceable Kingdom" based on a scripture exemplifying Quaker ideals. By the time he died in 1849 Hicks had painted 62 versions of Peaceable Kingdom set against a variety of historic backdrops, and the idea has been adapted by countless artists in the century and a half since. Muralist, illustrator, and 3D cardboard sculptor John Park was born in Seoul and raised in Ohio, but now lives in Los Angeles. In 2017 Park partnered with @BeautifyEarth and painted this version of Peaceable Kingdom in Santa Monica on 30th St at Ocean Park Blvd. @johnparkart/

“FLYING OR FALLING”
by John Park
Wondering the alleys of the neighborhood around LA’s Beverly Blvd. Gabba Gallery is a worthwhile adventure that will reveal dozens of murals of varying sizes by both the aspiring and the famous of the street art world. Before you ever get that far, however, you’ll walk past the colorful abstract work of gallery owner Jason Ostro and run right into this fabulous 2014 piece by Korean-born John Park. Park, a classically trained artist from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. Driven by the conviction that people love people and never tire of figurative art Park is also attempting to reconcile the classical influences of his training with a more contemporary urban aesthetic, creating in him an intentionality in the distortions of figures that has become a signature part of his work—and inviting the viewer to make their own interpretations of his work. @johnparkart @gabbagallery @jasonostro @scenesfromthesidewalk
