as someone whos read your make yourself at home fic (and the series it belongs to) and just overall a massive yellow fan i cant help but feel that while yellow did get their bit of autonomy (FINALLY) it was just. too little, too late? it felt like an afterthought more than anything else. like yes, it's good that yellow Finally got some sort of autonomy and recognition of the ways they were used, but it genuinely felt like hg was just sick of fans complaining about yellow being ignored lmao

(also yeah sorry im a bit too scared to come off anon. i Do love your takes on the podcast however and i really enjoy hearing your opinions!)

Okay real talk, it has been SO WEIRD listening to this arc as one of the fan authors who has spent quite a lot of time faffing about in the AU of "what if John and Yellow merged and became the King again?" In theory this is an endgame for them both that I wouldn't mind. But everything in the way it was handled and then vaporized from orbit hit me the wrong way. From the John side, that he insisted he wasn't capable of being happy or experiencing "friendship" in his new form, that he gave up entirely on stopping Kayne. But from the Yellow side?

It just shows how much of a nothing character the show considers Yellow to be. Yellow was angry and prideful, desperate and insecure. None of that shows up in the new King, just a flat nothingburger that sometimes sounds like John. He and John were both possessive and obsessive about Arthur, but that's nowhere to be seen now. Like someone on the tag already pointed out, we get nothing about how it felt for John and Yellow to regain their fully memories of being the King, what motivated him, how John's memories of the second Dark World trip affected him. And especially the King insisting several times that if not for John, he never would have bothered rebuilding Carcosa.

Hastur your sigil is all over the walls! Why would the King in Yellow not want to rebuild it? John has never expressed one moment of interest in that city, whereas Yellow was it's ruler. But once slapped together, their opinions have swapped.

This could have been made interesting. Maybe the King was bored of Carcosa and that's why he tried to leave for Earth in the first place. Maybe John got his memories back of Carcosa, and in experiencing them for the first time, saw the beauty and wonder that the King took for granted. Imagine if Arthur rolled up and John was eager and excited to show Arthur everything he'd done, to spread his appreciation, even if he realized later it wasn't enough without his best friend. Instead it's Just Because. WHY does John care so much about restoring Carcosa, which the King himself doesn't care enough to do, as opposed to finding a way to stop Kayne? Dunno. Just because it's a generic "good" thing to do, I guess.

And then John leaves and Yellow is just like... there. I guess. Still devoid of his original personality, exit stage left, we're done with him. He never got a chance to teach us anything about who he is now or what he could become. No reaction to Larson being killed off - the man who saved him from Arthur, the man who promised to help him but may have been full of shit. Doesn't care. I think we're supposed to assume that he will continue to rebuild Carcosa, having learned something from John, but WHAT?? We don't know why John wanted to rebuild, let alone got to see him transfer that passion to his other self!

WHY CAN'T JOHN AND YELLOW JUST GET A SCENE TOGETHER??? The meal remains uneaten. It's so frustrating.
