amber - share an unpopular opinion that you may have.

Hmm. I think I’ve shared the whole shipping war thing before, so here’s one about art: I know a lot of people try to be supportive and say that, no matter if one likes or dislikes one’s work, one should post it because someone out there might love it. Okay, cool. But this is not for me. I have only posted about 60% of the stuff I paint, and I would not be comfortable sharing the rest with the world, because I think it is unworthy. And that has to do with my own standards, and I think that is a fair thing because I want to hold myself to a certain quality. I am totally open for talking about that, and I think a lot of artists do this, and to me that is perfectly fine. I will not show the things where I think I failed, instead I will try to do better next time. And that is usually a concept that works for me. Failing will not discourage me from continuing to do art. I understand that this may not be for everyone, and that is cool! Everyone has their process and perception of their work, and perhaps for some people it is encouraging to hear the above shared sentiment, but it is not for me.

( meme ) - Thank you! <3 It’s not too late! I consider all memes and prompts open as long as they’re on my blog (might just need to link me to the post and be very specific if it’s an old one LOL).

G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

Depends on the story? I usually try to write somewhat in order, just to cut down on fixing continuity mistakes later (or accidentally using a really good line in the wrong place). But I also tend to write down scenes or segments of dialogue/description/inner monologues as they come to mind; so I don’t forget or can work on other bits when I’m stuck. For instance, my doc for the Sheriarty haunted house fic is currently laid out like this:- Jim wakes up- he’s released- a mostly blank page with a handful of notes- he finds The House- he explores some- another completely blank page- almost the end

Each of those are just fragments of scenes, all put on their own pages in as close to order as I can currently get and eventually I’ll just fill in all the empty spaces between each fragment with content til it’s a full story and I’m done. Hopefully it’ll be cohesive. LOL But that’s how I approach most fics. In long fics, I’ll move the out of order scenes and notes to another document so I don’t have to go wading through 12k or something of out-of-order scenes just to get to the section I’m looking for.

L: How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?

Well...I’m constantly revising as I write--just little fixes, that kind of thing--but full on revisions...usually three to six, depending on how spontaneous and how long the story is (as well as if one of my betas got to it). One shots usually get the least amount of editing--usually just a single read through unless I really feel like something’s off.

O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?

Oooh, usually the characters, though maybe not in the way the meme initially meant. Starting with a plot is kinda rare for me--occasionally one’ll pop into my head fully formed and then it’s almost a chore to write it sometimes (because there’s no mystery and no excitement left for me, and I really enjoy not entirely knowing everything that’s gonna happen while I’m writing) but usually it’s just random scenes or bits of dialogue that I let the characters work on for a while. For instance, had an idea for a crossover and I have no idea of the plot, just a vague inclination of how it starts and this bit of dialogue:

“Well you did return from the assumed dead to perpetrate a multi-million pound robbery at fifteen...that might be interesting to some people.”

He gave a nonchalant shrug, trying not to grin into his coffee mug. “I just got bored. Decided to skip class. It’s not a big deal.”

So...that’s probably not going to end up in the fic at all. But I’ll still let Sherlock and Jonathan play off each other a bit and figure out where they want to go with it. When they’re ready, I’ll know and be able to start writing a test chapter, even if they haven’t told me where it’s going. I feel like leaving the start in the characters’ hands makes it flow better/more naturally than if I start with a scripted plot.

K - What character has your favourite development arc/the best development arc?

Hnng, this is hard. If we’re talking about characters (and not relationships), I think I’d say Grace Van Pelt from The Mentalist.

I’m not exactly sure you’re familiar with The Mentalist though, and I’m also not sure how many fandoms we have in common, so as a second option I’d offer Molly Hooper? Because the difference in the way she acts around Sherlock in the first and last episode was also quite impressive, especially for a show that always felt to me like it tried to keep everything in stasis (in the purest “it’s always 1895″ fashion, perhaps). (Not that it always worked, but that’s another story.)

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves.

I’m quite impressed with Lestrade’s pigheaded loyalty, to be honest. Working with Sherlock must have been very hard on his self-esteem and while they both got something out of their association on a professional level, Sherlock’s casual insults aren’t exactly the kind of behaviour that breeds friendship. But Lestrade decided he would be Sherlock Holmes’ friend and ally and, aside from a few snags here and there, that’s what he was to the end, whether it was profitable to him or not (and a lot of time it was not).

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.

Most fictional characters look like they’re high drama and high maintenance lol and in real life I stay away from that as much as possible. Maybe “C” from Elementary? I’d love to nerd with her about writing and literature. (Plus, she writes dirty letters as a hobby. That makes her interesting by default and I could use advice in the porn writing department lol.)

⭐ risin’ - what is the most powerful you’ve ever felt?

That‘s...an interesting question. I don‘t think "powerful" is a feeling I often experience. I‘d say, 1) in a sexual way, when I‘m in a safe environment and I‘m making out with someone whom I then push away while smiling, bc I‘m trash haha. 2) Realising I didn‘t need someone I thought I did and cutting them out of my life. 3) When I‘m taking a walk in the dark and listen to music and don‘t feel like a person at all. When it‘s just me and the night and the hunger.

🌱 almost you - what is the song that describes you best?

Somewhere between this , this and this.

-I‘m not big on ship hate but if I had to choose it‘d probably be Kylo/Rey from Star Wars. I don‘t even care about the ship per se, but the fandom‘s interpretation is such blatant self insert that disregards both characters as well as it is 99% of the time racist (by villying the one black character Star Wars has as a lead that was clearly set up to be Rey’s love interest) aaaaaand romanticising abuse. Like, I‘m down for anything no matter how dark as long as it is treated with care and reflection/the people are aware that irl that particular relationship would be unhealthy—but that is not the case for the bigger part of that fandom. Also, sorry but self insert in general makes me personally super uncomfortable and it‘s even worse if people don‘t even realise that that‘s what they‘re doing. Just. No. Same goes for much of Molly/Jim stuff tbh, though that I simply ignore since the fans seem to be okay (and not as vicious, unreflected and opposed to civil discussion as most Reylow fans). Also all the reader/character stuff going on in the Vikings fandom. What is that ABOUT. Urghhhh.

-there‘s not really a ship that I used to ship, but don‘t anymore, or at least I can‘t seem to think of one. Once I love something, I usually stay with it though I go through phases of not being active in a particular ship despite me loving it. But I always come back to them at some point!

-AU ideas for Sheriarty? MATE I am TRYING TO SLEEP HERE. No, no I love it. Okay:

• obviously all of the Jim-is-not-dead AUs. ALL OF THEM.

• trashy disco night out AUs, you know exactly what I mean

• AUs in which TRF never happens/is faaaar in the future and their game extends over years (and bedsheets)

• OUR BRIDESHEAD REVISITED AU (honestly, I think about it so often)

• historical AUs: Late Roman Republic AU (bored heir of a noble family Sherlock falls into some deadly games with ruthless politician-sort-of-Octavian Jim, Sebastian is his Agrippa but in meaner), 19th century AU, fuck, give me Jim and Sherlock in Renaissance Florence AU (art? the Medici? politics? ART, murder? etc? I live. Also Jim having various affairs with Renaissance artists.)

• artist Jim AU just because him using charcoal or oil would be fucking poetry

• MUSICIANS AU (Sforzando but with more Sheriarty)

• any AU where they already meet in university and set the world ablaze

• ........ Queer Eye AU.

As for quotes that remind me of Sheriarty...

there are so many lines of poetry I associate with them/Jim. The Yeats poem I sent you, various bits from Plath, a lot from Paradise Lost, esp Death‘s line:

"To me, who with eternal famine pine, alike is hell, or paradise, or heav'n."

But also...literally most of the lyrics from the Sheriarty playlist. And... descriptions on NASA‘s website about black matter and black holes. They all seem to be metaphors for Jim. (Judge me), and especially descriptions of how two black holes merge, that this merging makes a sound that we can hear, just a silly little sound but it ruptures time and space.

Also this bit from Keats‘ Ode to a Nightingale for Jim:
