Janus still hadnât been entirely sure what exactly he was looking for when he began picking the lock to the office of one of the richest men in town.
Logan hadnât been very helpful in that regard, only able to echo the vague descriptions he himself had been given over the phone: small, delicate, and feathered.
âOh goody, thatâs only about every passerine in existence,â Janus had snarked at the time, but a lack of specifics wasnât going to stop them from getting the unfortunate animals out by any means necessary.
JALR Deleted Scene: A Little Halloween.
I just couldn't write a haunted house to my satisfaction and then work got way too busy so...
/////////////
Fall was in full swing with an array of vibrant colors painting the Auradonian landscape, but Chloe was too busy admiring the excited twinkle in Redâs eyes to take it in. The pair were headed for a haunted mansion that had been advertised around campus and while horror wasnât really Chloeâs thing, Red had been insistent they go.
The Wonder had discovered her love for all things spooky and scary in the month leading up to this and when she learned Littles were required to bring their caregivers, she had initially been devastated thinking there was no way her curly haired princess would agree to attend such a thing, but she underestimated the bluenetteâs commitment to letting her experience everything that she had gone without in Wonderland.
Of course Chloe had been hesitant at first. As much as she knew her fiery redhead could take care of herself, she also knew that it was exactly the kind of thing that would bring her Little to tears if she were to fall into headspace. She had voiced that concern to her girlfriend when sheâd first brought it up, but Red was rather confident she could stay big for one day of Halloween fun.
They decided to go right as it opened to avoid any crowds (Red understood that they were going with the intention of being scared, but anxiety was definitely not the kind of fear they were going for) and so it was only 9 am on Halloween that they found themselves coming up on the place that was advertised on the flier they were holding.
âThat must be it! Look at it! This is going to be awesome!â Red exclaimed in glee at seeing what looked like a haunted manor in the distance. Chloe could feel her heart start to pick up just a little at seeing it, but Red was quick to squeeze their interlocked hands reassuringly.
âAre you really sure about this Red? Maybe we can still catch Joel and Elianna for apple picking at the orchard.â Chloe looked down the path theyâd come as if she thought sheâd see the duo in the distance, but her attention was quickly caught when Red gave her an actual pout.â
âYou said youâd be fine doing this with me.â Red was torn because on one hand, her caregiver did promise her they would go to this haunted house that she really wanted to go to, but on the other, she never wanted to make Chloe do anything she was uncomfortable with.
Chloe sighed at the look on her girlfriends face as she was easily able to see the battle painted across her expression pretty clearly.
âIâll be fine, Love. Just⌠Donât let go of my hand, okay?â A bright smile overtook Redâs face and Chloe instantly felt better about ignoring the bad feeling in her gut.
âOf course, Princess! Iâll be with you the whole time.â
They made their way up to the entrance where when they saw the silver band around Redâs wrist, they brought out some paperwork that Chloe then had to fill out after showing her own gold bracelet to prove their dynamic.
âOkay, please be courteous of the props and the decorations as a lot of work went into setting all this up. Please no cameras, and no flashlights and of course Please donât attack our actors.â The host gave them the run down and soon they were creeping through a dark hallway with all sorts of creepy decorations surrounding them.
âOh Gods, Red, you are so lucky I love you!â The Princess was squeezing the shorter girlâs hand out of fear as they passed actors in terrifying costumes that seemed to be watching and lurking behind them a little too closely for comfort.
âHey, itâs alright Chloe. This is no sweat! Weâll be through to the other side before you know it!â The redhead was rather undisturbed by it all, and just still seemed to hold a bunch of excitement at seeing it. She laughed at certain gory decorations or when random props would pop up out of nowhere.
Her laughs were almost enough to drown out Chloeâs occasional screams.
While the bluenette was still on the verge of a heart attack she had to admit the girlâs giddiness was helping soothe her own nerves.
For a moment, as she watched Red cackle in another actor's face, Chloe thought she might actually be having fun!
And thatâs when things went very wrong.
Red had been enjoying herself, feeling absolutely thrilled. She kept glancing at Chloe every now and then to ensure she was truly alright, but her eyes were mainly taking in all the details of every room, and every costume.
But then she froze entirely when her eyes came across something she hadnât been prepared for.
The room was set up to look like a cellar with fog, cobwebs, and chains all along the walls and ceilings, but in the center there was an executioner block with fake blood all around it, and what looked like a headless body lying against it.
It was probably one of the least realistic looking things that had been in the house with the body just being old clothes stuffed with hay and the fake blood looking far too pink, but it was enough to send an absolute chill down Redâs spine.
Seeing it had immediately brought her visions of actual decapitations and severed heads that she had witnessed growing up and suddenly she felt like she couldnât breathe.
âRed?â Chloe was concerned when the redhead had stopped walking, and she was taken by complete surprise when she burst into tears.
âBlueyâ She whimpered out and Chloeâs eyes widened in alarm as she realized the girl had dropped. The littleâs eyes were flicking around frantically as pure terror started taking place in her features.
Chloe cursed under her breath as she quickly pulled the girl into her arms and guided her face into the crook of her neck so she would no longer be able to see all the things that were ever so frightening for her.
âItâs okay Little One, Blueyâs got you. None of it is real, okay Sweetie?â She started whispering in her ear while running her hand through her hair.
âIs she okay?â Chloe jumped and screamed when she looked up to see an actor dressed up like a murdered lumberjack standing right in front of her and she had to close her eyes to try and calm her racing heart, especially since her own scream had scared her Little too.
âSorry.â The sheepish look he took on actually helped in lowering the shock factor of his costume.
âItâs okay. My Little just dropped and sheâs not really handling any of this well in headspace. Are there any shortcuts to get out of here?â
âOf course! And donât worry, it happens pretty often around here. Thatâs why thereâs so much paperwork for Littles to come in. Follow me, Iâll lead you guys out.â Chloe lifted Red onto her hip as the girl continued to cry into her, and she followed the lumberjack as he brought them to a door hidden behind a spooky tapestry.
âRight this way.â He opened the door and stepped aside to let her step through and Chloe was relieved to find they were in a plain, nicely lit hallway.
âJust head down to the end, and there will be a clearly marked exit door on the left.â
âOh my Gods, thank you so much! Look baby! Thereâs no more scaries!â Redâs tearstained face peaked out and took in the serenity of their calm surroundings before she laid her head back against Chloe and brought her thumb up to her mouth.
Chloe dug into the bag she always carried with her for instances like these, and procured her girlâs pacifier. She took off the protective cover it had to make it more travel ready and replaced her toddlerâs thumb with it.
âAlright baby girl. Letâs get the heck outta here.â
By the time they made it back to their dorm, Red was back to being her sweet giggly girl, her tears already long forgotten.

Remus hated to admit it, but Pattycakes had been right.
He definitely should have waited a little longer before trying for his next escape attempt.
It was the woulda-coulda-shoulda sort of regret that he didnât usually waste time on. He was well aware of how many of his plans were bonafide bad ideas, and he generally went through with them anyhow.
