Jack went to the hospital today, no reason besides that of his job. It physically hurt him, to walk into that building, the familiar sterile walls, ringing in his ears the smell that stung. He hated it.
But while he was there, he got stopped. By the sounds of a familiar laugh.
It was Luke.
Curious, Jack followed the sounds of the laughter. Corner after corner, he walks, till finally. He finds him.
Luke was leaning against the counter, talking to the lady behind the desk. They seemed to know each other.
At first, Jack hid, he didn’t want to be seen. But he peeked around the corner and watched from afar.
Luke continued to smile, although it seemed… off.. for him. He nodded along to what the lady was saying then shrugs and says something to her.
Jack couldn’t make out the words, but still, he watched. This is what Luke is like when he’s not around.
it seemed… strange to Jack.
It was after Luke had finished his conversation, and checked the time. That a thought struck Jack.
“What the fuck is he doing here?!” He muttered under his breath.
Jack steps out from his hiding place and his shoulders tense automatically. He bounds over to Luke, whos smile had disappeared.
He seemed to be saying goodbye to the lady at the desk and was about to leave. When Jack suddenly appeared.
When Jacks shadow fell across Luke, and Luke looks up from the floor. His eyes widened. What was he doing here? Lukes face spelled out.
Jacks face was set in his natural sneer. Although that’s not the look he should have been giving. It’s the one that came.
The lady behind the desk noticed and tried to call security. But Luke quickly turns and ushers her to calm down. That Jack was a friend. but her face twisted in disbelief. That’s what all bullied kids say. right.
Jack ignored her. He didn’t care. He kept his gaze on Luke. Eventually, he asked.
“What the fuck. Are you doing here? You’re not injured are you?” leave it to jack to turn something caring to sound like he’s insulting Luke.
But Luke takes it kindly. “Ah! No, no. I was just visiting…” He didn’t finish even though Jack waits for it.
“Well?!” Jack urges.
Luke takes it another way. “Oh, My dad owns this hospital and I know a lot of the staff here, so I always stop by and say hi when I get the chance.”
“… That’s not fucking– whatever.”
Jack jerks his head, taking the hint. Luke takes the lead to leave. The lady at the desk shouts to Luke. “Tell your father I said hi!”
He twists his head over his shoulder and throws back. “Will do Susan!”
But the second his head turns straight, he mumbles something along the lines of. “If I see him this week.”
This is a side of Luke Jack has never seen before.
The entire walk, (Jack has no idea where they’re going he’s just following Luke) Luke has had a scowl on his face. His eyes have been dark, but every time Jack would catch his eye. Luke would smile as if nothing was wrong.
They stopped at a gate nearby Lukes house. Jack’s never taken this route before, so he’s never noticed this.
“… You live near the graveyard.” Was the first thing out of Jacks’ mouth since they’ve been walking.
Lukes’ eyes lift from the ground, he looks at Jacks face which was trained on the graveyard sign. then to the graveyard. A grim smile plastered on his face.
“Yeah…”
Jack’s face went blank. his eyes darkened. but he wouldn’t stop looking.
“Do you want to go in?” Luke asks. his hand hovered above Jacks shoulder.
Jacks mouth opened. He was tempted to say no. But, maybe he should.
No strength for words, Jack nods. And he enters.
The rows of gravestones seem familiar to Jack. He walks a familiar path as if he’s done this many many times.
And finally, he stops, right in front of his parents’ grave. And stares.
it wasn’t until a hand on his shoulder, shocked him out of his daze, that Luke had followed him.
There was a silent question radiating from Luke.
“These are my parents’ graves.” Jacks voice was soft.
There was silence for a bit.
The hand on Jacks shoulder tightens for a second, then it starts shaking. At first, Jack thought nothing of it. Then a gut-wrenching sob left Luke. And something in Jack twisted.
His body acted on its own. Jack suddenly turns to look at Luke. His face actually showing concern. Jack took one look at Lukes’ face. it was scrunched as if he was still trying to hold back the tears, but they fell wildly and free. It almost looked as if a dam had broken. as if it was all of the sudden.
Without question, Jack pulls Luke into his arms, Lukes’ head pressed to Jacks’ chest. And Jack groomed Lukes’ hair.
Slowly they sunk to the ground.
Lukes sobs got more wild, he screamed into Jacks’ chest. The sounds alone tore at Jacks’ heart. Jack just continued to comb Lukes’ hair, hoping his arms were enough to let Luke know he wasn’t alone.
Soon enough, Lukes’ crying calmed enough for him to speak.
“I don’… I don’t want to lose my mom. Not before saying goodbye.”
It seemed as if Luke's been holding this in for a while.
