#JackedKirby - Kirby Dynamics.... aka that time Cap killed Red Skull by breaking his back! 💥💥💥 People love to talk about the levels of pure action that drip off the page when Jack is on a comic, but Tommy and I had a recent conversation on one of the latest podcasts (Episode #51 - The Sleeper Saga) that sometimes this intense action might have led to some accidental “murders” by the heroes involved! Take this wonderful page from Tales of Suspense #Issue81 (published in September of 1966). 💥💥💥 The page begins with a fight sequence between Cap and Red Skull, and in that very first panel we get to see some of that “Kirby action” on display with Cap delivering a flying sidekick to Red Skull’s spine from behind!!! As if this back breaking kick wasn’t brutal enough, Cap is furthering the pain by bending Skull’s arm back behind his head, increasing the fierceness and intensity of the kick 10 Fold! 💥💥💥 Now the average comic fan is reading this and loving the anatomically incorrect Kirby fight scene for all its worth... but there is no denying that Red Skull is probably dead after that kick!!! If he isn’t dead, he is definitely wheelchair bound... the brutality of this blow is absolutely insane!!! Cap’s out here killing dudes.... here is my proof!!! 💥💥💥 But in all seriousness, you found insane action packed panels like this in EVERY issue Jack drew... he is just awesome in a way that not many other comic artists could be. He also had a thing for extreme eye close ups (Pic 3 of this post). #JackedKirby - The Red Skull SUPREME!!! 💥💥💥 The battle between Cap and The Red Skull over the Cosmic Cube is one of the greatest story arcs in the Super Soldiers history.... it took place over several issues in Tales if Suspense towards the end of the anthology comics run. This post refers to #Issue81 of the comic, published in September of 1966. Continuing the story from the past issue, Skull has possession of the Cosmic Cube and he intends to use it to create an army of super warriors to conquer the UNIVERSE. Cap knows that this means a lot of death for the “unworthy” so he needs to get that cube... and fast! 💥💥💥 Pic 1 shows the original pencil/ink version of the image, and you can see the editing that was done to the image around Red Skull’s mouth (the white Out marks are clearly viable). We also see extensive margin notes providing key plot lines (Pic 2) from Jack to Stan across the bottom of the page. The margin notes signify both the power of the actual cube, the intention of how Skull plans to use it and finally that Cap NEEDS to take it from him by all means necessary! The final pic of the post is the original newsprint color version of the page (pic 3). 💥💥💥 The margin notes in this one are key evidence in the proof that Jack (and other Marvel artists) did WAY more then just draw the images from a comic... they plotted the action and provided instruction for the writer to come behind them and dialogue the completed story.
