It goes by a million different names that you probably don't care about and I had to google it to find out. The newsboy/driving/ivy/flat cap is a good option if you are a bit weary to enter into the world of hats. It has a bit less costume like connotation than large brimmed hats. In terms of materials, you can't go wrong with tweed or wool for fall/winter and cotton or linen for spring/summer. Muted neutrals such as grey, brown, navy, forest green, and blue allow the piece to match the majority of your wardrobe.

The biggest fit issue with flat caps relates to the width of the cap. These caps can look goofy as hell if you choose one that is significantly wider than your face. Since I have such a narrow face, I tend to curl the bill of my flat caps to keep its width proportional. Paying attention to proportion is one of the foundations of good personal style. No matter how much you love a piece, if it just doesn't fit quite right then do not buy it. 

The best way to avoid making flat caps look out of place and like a part of a costume is to give consideration to the rest of your look. Don't simply throw on a flat cap with everything. This lack of regard is what makes for confused looks that send mixed signals. If you still have no idea what the hell to wear with a flat cap, then try pairing it with classic and slightly rugged menswear pieces such as chunky shawl collar cardigans, tweed vests, chambray shirts, work wear boots, denim, and henleys. Try to avoid pairing this casual hat with more formal underpinnings.
