#JackedKirby - Odin (Movie version) vs Odin (Kirby Version) 💥💥💥 Odin is one of my favorite character designs of Kirby’s, and upon recent rewatches of the MCU movies I have come to realize that Jack’s unique style for his characters shines through in Anthony Hopkins portrayal of the God King more than ever... 💥💥💥 In Pic 1 of this post we get the awesome opening scene that shows Odin about to hand off the crown of Asgard to his warrior son Thor. Odin is decked out in all gold armor and a wild helmet... looks like a mix between Loki’s horned helm and Thor’s winged helm. As I rewatched it I instantly realized that it was reminding me of a specific panel from Kirby... but which one??? 💥💥💥 After a short image search the answer was obvious... Pic 2 of the post is from the Tales of Asgard back up feature in Journey Into Mystery #Issue123 (December of 1965). The opening splash to the story features Odin in solid gold armor and a horned helmet, ready to take on the coming Ragnarok (the end of the known world). #JackedKirby - Floating Heads, a double page splash and Krackle filled title page... oh my!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 The Losers was a special comic from DC because it combined a slew of random characters from earlier war comics throughout the 60s into one big team looking back on World War II. Nostalgia for the “Great War” was alive and well in the 70s and DC dug deep in their well of past characters to create this unlikely team that always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time together... hence the name they get, The Losers! 🇺🇸💥🇺🇸 Writer Robert Kahniger first teamed the crew up in #Issue123 of Our Fighting Forces (published in Jan/Feb 1970). The team consisted of Captain Johnny Cloud, Captain Storm and the duo of Gunnar & Sarge. It was a relatively obscure feature, steadily chugging along in publication until Jack grabbed the writing/art reigns of the book with #Issue151 of Our Fighting Forces (published in August of 1974) and would continue on the book until #Issue162 in December of 1975). Despite being one of the last regular series Jack would work on during this tenure at DC, he took the process and subject matter very series... and created an amazing look back at WWII!!! 🇺🇸💥🇺🇸 This series of pages opens up Jack’s first issue on the run... and sums it up perfectly. This is some first four pages! We get on opening title page with some great paneled action and Kirby’s signature floating heads, we get a double splash page next that is struggling to be contained by the borders of the page, and then he finishes up this strong open with another single page splash of our 4 intended heroes in all there Kirby glory ! Just look at all that Krackle... it’s awesome! I also included that columns letters page, which instead of printing readers letters did something a bit different: Jack penned a page long letter to the book’s readers detailing what to expect and what he was trying to bring to make this war comic unique!!! 🇺🇸💥🇺🇸 Jack was proud of his service in the military, and he made sure to do it justice whenever he depicted it in his work. This is a prime example of that.... and it’s one of the most underrated things Jack ever did!!! 💥🇺🇸💥

#JackedKirby - The Shadow People Of Jack’s Kid Colt Covers!!!! 🤠🤠🤠 The sheer amount of Jack’s contributions to the Timely/Marvel line in the late 50s/early 60s is immense... it’s so much more than people even realize! While people will quickly point to the huge load Jack carried doing interiors/Covers in all those Anthology Books (Strange Tales, Tales to Astonish, etc)/FF/Thor and Avengers... people often overlook his other contributions across the line. Like for example: Did you even know Jack provided Covers for the Kid Colt, Outlaw series for over 6 straight years? 🤠🤠🤠 Starting with #Issue83 (March of 59) and ending with #Issue123 (July of 1965) Jack did the majority of Covers on Kid Colt, Outlaw. The interiors were mostly drawn by Marvel vet Jack Keller in those Issues, and later issues in the series would feature Marvel luminaries like Larry Lieber, Herb Trimpe and Sol Brodsky providing art to the book... but Jack’s enticing covers were a hallmark of the series during the rise of the Marvel Brand in the early 60s! 🤠🤠🤠 I was recently looking at the run of covers Kirby did from issues 83-123 and I noticed a cool stylistic choice that Kirby used a few times in the series. He would have Kid Colt and the main action of the cover be in color, but the foreground characters would appear in black and white shadow coloring. This creates a clear separation of the characters on the cover and makes both stand out from each other equally since there is such stark coloring differences! It’s a genius technique that Jack goes back to the well for time and time again.
