I mean...I feel like you could just not watch the show for shipping fodder, but for the /story/, like what most people do. Just pay attention to the canon, y'know?
I mean I never really watched the show for shipping fodder to begin with? I don’t (and never did) have the expectation that any of my ships would become canon and, in the case of at least barbmura, they interacted so rarely that I mostly just made up whatever suited me for them at the time regardless of canon.
My thing with shipping is that I’m a lesbian, and I want lesbian/sapphic things in the content I interact with.
As fun as it is, Trollhunters just doesn’t have that.
Canon only really supports the Jlaire and Stricklake pairings (both of which are m/f and straight).
A quick look at the relationship filters over on AO3 shows those 2 pairings have the most stories by far. They’re followed by Blarrrghy, Steli, and Dromura. Yes, 2 of those are m/m pairings and subsequently gay, but there is still literally no popular lesbian content there.
Also that still leaves 3/5 popular fandom pairings as straight (4/6 if we include Darby, which is a little further down the list after the Jim and Toby friendship tag).
As a queer person who’s been told I have to enjoy m/f straight content for most of their life, I’m just utterly tired of it at this point. I’m perfectly fine with heterosexual content existing. I just don’t want to read it or see it anymore. I want stories (all kinds of stories - silly fluff, angst, adventure, all of it) that are about people like me. I want to be represented.
Like, I do enjoy the story of Trollhunters, but I also can’t ignore that straight relationships are included in its narrative and, if I want to read a fanfic story, it’s very likely those same straight relationships will be there too.
I’m not saying the content is bad (because a lot of it is in fact very good). I just want something that isn’t there, and I kinda want to go someplace where the things I want are represented.
