This is a fill for today’s @fluffuary prompt - Day 16: Feelings Realization as well as today’s @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt [#FFF340 Parallel Lines] and my @fandom-free-bingo Fool’s Edition C2- “I don’t understand” prompt.

Fandom: MCU/Marvel Pairing: James “Rhodey” Rhodes & Tony Stark (pre-slash) Rating: General Tags: MIT Era, Friendship, Feelings Realization, Skiiing, Internal Monologue Summary: Jim still didn’t quite understand how he’d ended up being so close with someone so different from him. But he wasn’t about to argue. Word Count: 353 words

“I don’t understand how you can think this is fun,” Jim grumbled as Tony swooshed to a stop next to him at the bottom of the relatively gentle, snow-covered slope. “I’m cold and I ache all over.”

“C’mon, Rhodey-bear - you’ve nearly got the hang of it!” Tony replied with an encouraging grin that did something funny to Jim’s insides. “It’s all about keeping your skis parallel with each other, whether you’re going straight or trying to turn. Let’s give it another try.”

Jim awkwardly followed his friend over to the tow line. If someone had told him six months ago he’d be spending part of his winter break at a ski resort in the Rockies like he was rich folk, he’d have wondered what they were smoking. But that was before he’d met Tony Stark.

Jim had heard that the boy genius and heir to the Stark fortune was going to enroll at MIT - but surely someone with that kind of money would be leading a whole separate - if somewhat parallel - life from a guy from Philly who was scraping by on a combo of scholarships and grants. But the two of them had ended up in the same Unified Engineering class and something had clicked. The next thing he knew, he was Tony’s best friend - and that was a pretty amazing thing.

In addition to being brilliant and handsome, Tony was charming as hell and generous to a fault. When Jim had explained that he couldn’t afford to travel anywhere except home for Winter Break, Tony had somehow made it seem like Jim was doing him a favor by coming with him to the resort. Tony had even sweet-talked Jim’s mama into letting him skip his family’s New Year get-together.

Maybe she’d seen the lonely little boy that Jim caught glimpses of every once in a while behind Tony’s camera-ready smile. Or maybe she’d seen something in Jim himself that he was just starting to figure out: that the way he felt about Tony wasn’t just friendship. So when Tony turned those big brown eyes his way, Jim just couldn’t say no.

The biggest shame about reading the iron man novelization is realizing we were ROBBED in certain aspects of the movie specifically when Rhodey saved Tony in the desert and saw the arc reactor for the first time he THOUGHT IT WAS A BOMB strapped to his chest and IMMEDIATELY told Tony he wasn't going to leave him and that he'd get them both out or they we're both going to die and WE WERE ROBBED!!!!! WE WERE ROBBED!!!!
