Super cool catch! This A. gestroi just shed its front half and is solidifying. The difference between the teneral portion and the pre-shed portion is clear in size and color. Isopods shed one half at a time for safety, and their sheds are eaten quickly by the other colony members for nutrients, so this was a quite lucky find!

I saved this ask until we did a soil change so I could tack on some pictures of their progress:
Kickstarter is quite enormous. He should be approaching pupation soon, as his terminal segment is translucent and filled with fluid. Like a real kickstarter campaign, I find myself promising estimated pupation dates to inquiring friends and then delaying them as he continues to remain larval. A longer larval period will, however, likely create a larger and more impressive beetle.
The D. tityus are also doing well. We did unfortunately have one loss, with two specimens remaining. These things will happen even with the best of care, as a clutch is meant to have 40 individuals. The two survivors have gotten larger containers and more soil as they prepare to pupate and then eclose late summer to early fall. I’m fairly confident we have a male and a female, but we’ll see. As for naming… we are still having some disagreement.
