Chorthippus parallelus, also known as the pink meadow grass hopper is the direct result of a genetic mutation called erythrism. Erythrism essentially is the overproduction of red pigmentation. Due to this mutation it’s a double edged sword. On one hand, it makes it more visible for us, humans, to observe. However, on the other hand because it’s more visible it’s in turn more visible and vulnerable to predators. Geographically they can be found in Asia and Europe, as well as sometimes in North America.

Magacrania batesii

Magacrania batesii, commonly referred to as the peppermint stick bug is native to the rainforests of northeastern Australia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands as well.

Similar to other phasmatodea, they have a defense mechanism of spraying a irritating liquid when threatened. HOWEVER THESE BAD BOYS?? They get their name because the liquid they spray from glans behind their heads is peppermint scented.

Endangerment status: vulnerable

Primary diet: screw pine leaves
