The difficulty entirely depends on what school or program you’re trying to transfer into. For example, Stern has a very high retention rate, which means that students don’t tend to leave the school. That, when paired with how competitive admission already is, means that it’s difficult to transfer into Stern. When I applied to Gallatin, on the other hand, my advisor told me that if you have a solid GPA and an idea for what you want to study that isn’t offered elsewhere, you stand a good chance of getting in. 

It’s totally possible. Before I figured out that I wanted to go into Gallatin, I spoke to my advisor a lot about the different options that I had. I also spoke to the Gallatin transfer advisor at the time who was absolutely wonderful and helped answer a lot of my questions. I really suggest talking to both your advisor and the Gallatin transfer advisor, as they can really help you figure out how feasible transferring would be for you and help plan out what you’d have to do to get there.

Basically, the transfer advisor told me that, as long as you had a plan of how to answer why you’d want to transfer to Gallatin and you had a strong GPA (3.5~), then you had a pretty good chance of getting that transfer. Having an idea of what you want to study that isn’t offered anywhere else (like computer science and marketing) is really a big part of what you need to get accepted.
