The Rev. Judith Hoehler, BD â58
âI had not intended to go on into a ministry. I really had intended to take a year out and go back into foreign service, but after I had been there for about six months studying, I knew that this was the place where I wanted to be. I felt my calling was in theology and ministry.â
Interdenominational holiday cards now available here on my etsy.
I come from a family that celebrates Chanukah, Christmas, and the Winter Solstice, and it was always difficult to find cards that properly represented everything that the season encompassed for us, so last year I decided to design some cards that would combine imagery from all three holidays.

Since 2009, this community-wide initiative [Jewish Disability Awareness Month] has sought to raise awareness and support for including people with disabilities in all facets of Jewish life. Here are just a few of the stories, ideas, and resources that have resulted from this important awareness effort, both from the Reform Jewish community and beyond.
Sucker For Love
âYour goodness is so great! You have stored up great blessings for those who honor you. You have done so much for those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world.â Psm 31:19NLT
How I love the genius of King David! When you get the time, read the Psalms and note two things. First, mark every time David cries out about everything bad in his world. âBoohoo God I need your help because of all these enemies out to do me in.â Second, mark every time David strokes the Lord by telling Him how glorious and capable He is. David goes on and on about God being Protector, Helper, Conqueror of all enemies, Provider of needs, Keeper of promises, anon.Â
David reminded me of one granddaughter, when she was very small. She was scared of the boogey man. Up she would crawl on Louâs lap. âPapaw, youâre bigger than the boogey man. You can beat him up. You wonât let him get me.â Hugging Louâs neck, âWill you get the boogey man out from under my bed?â
Do you think Lou explained to her about there not being a boogey man? Ha! That would be me! Nope! Lou was on his feet and chasing the boogey man out from under the bed. After theyâd made sure the boogey man had goneâ afraid of Papaw, Lou would tuck her into bed, covered with kisses and both happy.
Mother was 92 years of age, when she passed on to heaven. She was 55 when she discovered that God wasnât Wesleyan-Pilgrim Holiness, but interdenominational. By 66 years old, Mom found that God wasnât all about rules and regulations. Daily, Mom sang His praises. Her freedom in Christ brought great joy. At 83, Mom received the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. From then on, Mom lived by love not rules, often saying, âGod is such a sensible God.â 84 years of age saw Mom going around praising the Lord over every little and big thing. From then on, Mom often put her hands in the air, sometimes for an hour, saying, âI love You Papa God, and You too Jesus.â Anyone who came for prayer, learned to praise God, avow love to the Holy Trinity, then pray. Mom often said, âGodâs a sucker for love.â The outcome of her prayers were speedy answers. I call Momâs way, the principle of praise.
The greatest thing Iâve learned from David and Mother is: âSing new songs of praise to him; play skillfully on the harp and sing with joy.Â
For the word of the LORD holds true, and everything he does is worthy of our trustâ Psm 33:3-4NLT. Will you learn the principle of praise? Whether you accept the lesson and begin praising your way into deliverance is up to you. Itâs your choice. You choose.Â
PRAYER: Awesome, wonderful, glorious Papa God, we love You! We love You! We love You! Be glorified in our lives. Lord, help us all to enter Your gates with thanksgiving, in Jesusâ name I pray.Â

Making your own Haggadah is not just a money-saver, but also a great way to educate yourself about the Passover ...
Among the simplest means described is using Haggadot.com. The video below from Haggadot.com describes how and why.
Or if youâre looking for an activity for your kids, check out PunkTorah.orgâs âMake Your Own Haggadah for Kids.â
The Wise Child, the Wicked Child, the Simple Child, and the Child Who Does Not Know What to Ask frame a discussion on racial justice for your seder table.
The Wise Child asks: What are the statutes and laws in our country that protect individuals from discrimination based on race?
The Wicked Child asks: Why must I be involved in pursuing racial justice?Â
The Simple Child asks: âWhat do we even mean by racial justice?âÂ
And the Child Who Does Not Know How to Ask:Â To respond to the child who is too overwhelmed to ask a question, you should start at the beginning, telling the child that we are not required to complete the work of racial justice, but neither are we free to desist from it....
The story of Pesach, of the Exodus from Egypt, is one of the oldest and greatest in the world. It tells of how one people, long ago, experienced oppression and were led to liberty through a long and arduous journey across the desert. It is the most dramatic story of slavery to freedom ever told, âŠ
To truly be free, we must understand what it means to not be free. Yet âfreedomâ itself has different dimensions, a point reflected in the two Hebrew words used to describe it, chofesh and cherut. Chofesh is âfreedom fromâ, cherut is âfreedom toâ. Chofesh is what a slave acquires when released from slavery. He or she is free from being subject to someone elseâs will. But this kind of liberty is not enough to create a free society. A world in which everyone is free to do what they like begins in anarchy and ends in tyranny. That is why chofesh is only the beginning of freedom, not its ultimate destination.
Cherut is collective freedom, a society in which my freedom respects yours. A free society is always a moral achievement. It rests on self-restraint and regard for others. The ultimate aim of Torah is to fashion a society on the foundations of justice and compassion, both of which depend on recognising the sovereignty of God and the integrity of creation. Thus we say, âNext year may we all be bnei chorin,â invoking cherut not chofesh. It means, âMay we be free in a way that honours the freedom of allâ.
