recently, my boyfriend and I have been discussing how Instagram tends to eventually show us more conservative content when we watch certain things
he loves sports, and after a little while of scrolling through basketball clips, he'll eventually be recommended redpill "hate all women" podcast clips
i really enjoy knitting but if I scroll through one too many videos of - often women - crafting, eventually I'll get tradwife content about submitting to a man
one of us is queer, the other works in wildlife conservation. neither of us seek out this stuff, but the algorithm really wants to show it to us. I'm sure we're not the only ones
I've started writing my first long fic (Cater's first year at NRC) and I got an Instagram because I need to know what Cater's feed would look like and how he would post. But of course I wanted to check out the twst fandom on that side of the internet. Immediately got hit with ships I didn't like. No biggie, I'll just filter out the tag and move on with my life.
20 minutes later, after much more research than necessary, I come out of my denial. Because no one told me Instagram DOESN'T LET YOU FILTER TAGS!?!?!
"Oh just click do not recommend content" Look me in the eyes and tell me an algorithm knows the difference between loving the characters but hating the ship.
