Where is that post that says something along the lines of
The first thought is what you’ve been conditioned to think and the second thought is showing who you are or how you’ve grown from that
I think about this a lot
I think it’s about those thoughts we all might have that are homophobic or racist that we don’t like, and we have to go.. ‘wait a minute no brain stop that I don’t think like that how dare you’
And I think that’s just a really powerful message that we don’t have to agree with the first thought that comes into our heads.
Because those are the thoughts we were conditioned to think by our parents, family, etc. while that disagreement we have with ourselves is us as a person being who we want to be and bettering ourselves.
The first thought is the mindset they gave you
The second thought is the mindset you are giving yourself
Idk I was thinking about how I would probably have never considered adopting a kid if I was ever to become a parent,
And then I got onto the Internet and was like, yeah ok, that’s cool but not for me
But then I read some more, some stories like ‘To Build A Home’ by @a-valorous-choice and realised that it might not be as bad as I’ve been conditioned to think it would be.
Of course the thought still makes me uncomfortable but I think the world has enough babies without educated, middle class people like myself creating more.
(My advice to anyone on this particular issue is go meet children in orphanages, go spend time with them, they can be some of the kindest kids I’ve ever met, and strangely enough, some of the happiest.)
But yeah, the fact that I would seriously consider adoption (not that I have to think about that for a long time yet) despite it being basically unheard of in my family and surrounding community and despite my initial hesitation just shows how I’ve grown as a person and how I’ve constructed my identity.
Yeah idk.. I just think that’s beautiful
