Anti-'Popular' Rhetoric
There exists a trend in teenage culture which seems to demonize the "popular" crowd. It assumes that the attractive, socially-powerful, "cool" crowd are nothing but attention-seeking, bratty, inconsiderate cretins. It plays up the converse that those who may be shy, awkward, nerdy, unattractive, or whatever are beautiful people on the inside and have more sustainable personal qualities in the long run.
This trend emerges mostly in literature, music, and film popular with teenage girls. Take, for instance, the music video for "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift, or the movie Mean Girls. There are all sorts of short books and others which I've not read that would follow this theme as well.
My gripe is this: The beautiful girls on the dance team with coach purses and nice tans can actually be wonderful people. The football captain whose girlfriend looks like a Victoria's Secret model might actually be one of the brightest and caring guys you know. On the flip side, the lonely, awkward girl reading her book in the corner might actually just be a terrible person bitter towards the world and incapable of compassion. The chubby guy who loves Model UN might also be a real asshole. Don't generalize. Don't assume 'unattractive' or 'uncool' people are worthless. Don't assume they all have hearts of gold. And don't assume the good-looking, popular ones are all heartless pawns of commercial culture either.

Be yourself
Don't even bother trying to get me to be like you, 'cause it won't happen. I'm sorry but I'm not going to conform to others' standards just to fit in. I don't care if I get classed as a social outcast, if I find myself stuck on the out-group, what's the point of being in the in-crowd when you can't be yourself?
It's funny. I'm not saying I am against those who enjoy being a whole part of that group, for I am no one to judge people, but I know for certain I'd rather go my own way, even if it means swimming against the tide.
I encourage people to break the mold, and start feeding their own personality, for that will let them grow as individuals. I believe one can only achieve true happiness if one pursues their dreams and is happy about themselves, and what they do. So have no fears!
Be yourself!
"I'm in with the in-crowd, I know what the in-crowd knows"
What movie is that from?? It's killing me that I can't remember
Edit:
There should be a website where you put in a song & it tells you all the movies it's been in.
If that already exists, let me know!!
