January 16th 1936 saw the birth of Michael “Chalky” White, in Glasgow.

As White suffered from asthma as a boy, his parents decided he would be educated as a boarder at the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz in Switzerland from age 7, where he was the only boy who did not speak the French language. He then graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris.

After working as a Wall Street runner in New York City in the 1950s, White took an interest in theatre, spending five years as assistant to Sir Peter Daubeny for his World Theatre seasons in London.

At 26, White produced his first West End play, a production of Jack Gelber's The Connection, he then produced Sleuth and Oh! Calcutta! before co-ordinating the production of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

In 1973, White produced the original theatre production of The Rocky Horror Show, and went on to produce the film version The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1975. Many of you might not have heard of Chalky but there is no bigger man in the industry to come from our shores to be liked and loved among the showbiz glitterati, White Mischief, The Comic Strip Presents and the wartime code- cracking tale Enigma are amongst his other credits, long-term friends included, Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas, Hugh Grant, Nicole Kidman and Paul Simon.

In my opinion Michael White Is the most famous Scottish person you’ve never heard of, he has even had a film made of his life.The Last Impresario. His parties are legendary, after A Chorus Line opened in 1975, he invited the audience as well as the cast to the after-party, a shindig that cost around £100,000.
