they've all heard tell of the ghost in the castle.
the elven king and queen have been blessed with three beautiful children: a set of twins, just as lovely as each other, and their oldest, their boy, their shining star.
there's another, though.
nobody's ever seen him. to many, he's a simple tall tale, meant to deter any peasants from daring to approach the castle. the ghost of the young elven prince, destroyed from the inside out by his own magic.
said prince, if he could, would tell you he is very much alive. very much bored, but alive, nonetheless. and though he is as much flesh and blood as the king himself, he still haunts the castle with his presence--or lack thereof. even his mother and father rarely catch a glimpse. not that they deign to look all that often. the only one to ever see the young sorcerer with any sort of frequency is the paladin who guards him.
guarding others from attacking him, they'd told him. but the princeling knows better. the knight who waits outside his door at all hours of the day is guarding him from hurting anyone else. he hates his paladin for it. even his strongest spell wouldn't bring him any meaningful distance from his chambers, but were the massive frame of the stoic goliath not blocking the only true exit, the prince would have escaped long ago.
so he hates him. his last obstacle to freedom. but no one cares to check on him but the knight and the servants who fetch his meals--and they pretend not to notice when the paladin isn't at his post in the wee hours of the morn, nor to know where he is instead: tucked around the young elf, whose perfect skin is bruised and marked from his neck to his thighs. the prince may be of the crown, may have magic running through his veins, but he belongs to no one but his knight.

yk it's bad when you start a new fanfic and get to the stain arc and wait with baited breath for the moment Iida dies only to realize that's not actually canon and you've got the wrong fanfic.
(I definitely did not spend that entire chapter trying to figure out why Iida is still alive)
