The Weird Mario All-Stars program means that we can give some much-needed additional discussion to some of the most iconic entities of the Super Mario cinematic universe. Like Ice Creature from Donkey Kong 64! There is a lot to talk about here! I’m gonna do it, you’d better believe I’m gonna do it! We’re gonna have TWO posts on this thing! Maybe more in the future! Who knows!

In the previous post, we talked about how Ice Creature is a tomato. I still think that’s important to point out. It isn’t immediately obvious, but it is most certainly a tomato, which in this game, have angry faces with sharp teeth. It’s just the way it is! What is also strange is that the Tomato enemies are found in Fungi Forest, while Ice Creature is found in Crystal Caves. Those are not the same place! How did one tomato get here? And JUST one! Not only that, but it’s lost its biggest fangs. This poor tomato must have such trouble feeding on animal flesh now!

Ice Creature lives in an “igloo” that is really more of a castle, but if Club Penguin says an ice castle can be an igloo, then who am I to disagree? Only Lanky can enter this castle. Remember this. It will be important.

Inside, Ice Creature sits on a... throne? and is so incredibly bored. It’s made a game to pass the time, though! I am not sure how it had the ability to create a game board, but it did. I don’t know why it didn’t create a SINGLE player game, though, since now it’s forced itself to wait for a playmate, and that playmate can only ever be the one orangutan in the world who can enter the castle! I guess it’s counting on their friendship to shine through. And it does!

The game involves flipping tiles to show your emblem, with Lanky having the DK logo, and Ice Creature having... K. Rool’s face?! Why! Are they affiliated? Are all the tomatoes affiliated? I guess K. Rool hired some tomatoes to work for him! Even though it’s mellowed out from the rest and is even friends with Lanky, Ice Creature still seems to have some sort of evil allegiance... maybe it was just repurposed from stuff that was lying around? The Kongs AND K. Rool left a bunch of Tiles all over the place, as you do.

There is not a happy ending to this minigame. If Lanky wins, the Ice Creature laments that it took days to think of the game, and that Lanky is no longer its friend because he won. Geez! That’s some horrible sportsmanship! What a toxic friendship this was. You have better friends who care about you, Lanky! You don’t need this tomato!

Now, let’s remember the fact that only Lanky can access this “igloo”. This is because there is a Lanky button that unlocks the bars blocking access to the entrance. Lanky Kong is, quite literally, the only entity who can open this door! Not even Ice Creature can! And as we can see, it can move just fine, jumping across tiles during its game. Why not leave when the door is opened? Why not take its chance at freedom? Does it fear what may happen if it would start to thaw, being frozen for so long?

We will never know what happens to Ice Creature in the future. Lanky has collected his Golden Banana, their friendship severed beyond repair. He has no reason to want to enter that castle again. Maybe someday, he can attempt to reconcile. But until then, Ice Creature is alone.
