Deep in the Skin
Skin is the largest organ and has a soft outer covering over the body. As it is flexible, it provides us free movements. As skin is exposed to the environment, it requires special attention. It plays a very vital role in protecting body from the external harmful elements. Not only that it also helps with regulating the body temperature, sensation and serves as insulation, It also secretes Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight.
Functions of Skin
There are three main functions of skin, these are protection, sensation and regulation.
Protection
The most important function of the skin, is protecting the body from intense temperature, harmful sunlight, toxic chemicals and radiation.
Sensation
It has variety of nerve endings and its function is to determine as well as to respond to different sensation, like temperature, pressure and pain.
Regulation
It regulates body temperature through secretion of Sweat. If there is an increase in evaporation of sweat, then it would decrease the body temperature. Bringing Small blood vessels at ease, would make it effortless to release some heat and lower the body temperature through the skin. Whereas heat is preserved by compression of the blood vessel. Hence we can say that regulation helps by protecting the body from negative impact of extreme heat and cold. Not only that it acts as a reservoir for the reconciliation of Vitamin D, and helps in calcium absorption.
Structure of Skin
Skin is made up of Layers, there are three layers, these are epidermis, dermis and beneath the dermis lies hypodermis. These are explained below:-
Epidermis
It is the outer layer of the body. It is the part of the skin that is visible and is the protective shield over the body. Keratin found in this layer servers as strong support, by holding the skin all together. It is also said to be a barrier for the infections, dehydration and UV destruction. Blood vessels are not present in this layer.
Dermis
The layer under Epidermis is called as Dermis. This layer is said to thick and it is closely connected with Epidermis. This layer comprises of nerves endings, blood vessels, sweat and oil glands. It helps in skin elasticity and in skin strengthening, therefore, it protects the body from stress.
Hypodermis
It is the deepest layer that is found below the Dermis. Its main objective is to connect the skin to the muscles and bone. This layer contains fat and loose connected tissues. This fat helps in protecting bones and joints from whack.
This was a basic and a brief description of the structure and functions of the skin. Skin is like a shield covering the body, hence it's utmost important, to be acquainted with your skin. I believe having basic knowledge, helps in understanding the subject matter quiet better, in the same way, some core knowledge of the skin would work wonders in understanding your skin. Therefore, its right to say that, if you entrust to knowledge, outcome would definitely be worthwhile, Isn't it?
