Because for Melony, based on my own opinions and what canon has shown us, she clearly doesn’t forgive Niles for what he did to her, Axol, or her friends. Which is completely valid of her, she has every right to not forgive him and (as a side note) I do like how the show demonstrated that you can choose not to forgive someone for what they did to you while still leading a positive and fulfilling life.

However for Smg0, it’s clear from canon that even after all the things that Niles put him through, he still wants to forgive him, which I think would definitely translate in an au where he survives.

This contrast would cause some rift between Melony and Smg0 in my opinion. Because for Melony, she can’t see how Smg0 could possibly forgive Niles after everything he did to him. And for Smg0, he would get Melony’s perspective to an extent but it would still hurt because Niles was still someone he considered a friend. He also has the knowledge of knowing Niles before everything went wrong and seeing who he truly was beyond the Godbox stuff, so that just adds a whole bunch of conflicting feelings on top of it.

I think after a while they would come to understand each other’s perspectives fully and learn that forgiveness is different for everyone, and whether a person forgives someone or not is completely up to them.

This lesson would help down the road in regards to Meggy with Mr Puzzles, as Smg0 and Melony could help guide her in realizing that if she wants to forgive Mr Puzzles that’s her decision and it’s valid, but she can’t force the crew into forgiving Mr Puzzles.
