Greetings! My protag is fighting reanimated skeletons in a modern setting and I'm looking for something that weakens/corrodes bones and could be made from household items (or at least from things easily found in a small fishing town). Also, what precautions should she take during making and using the substance? Could she make large quantities or will she have to do a bit of mixing on the spot?
Unfortunately for your protagonist, household chemistry is not on her side in this battle. Iām assuming the idea is to spray the reanimated skeletons with the substance (letās call it Skel-O-Solveā¢) to either degrade them to the point where theyāre no longer mobile, or to weaken them in a way that would make other forms of attack more effective. To do this Skel-O-Solve needs to check a number of different boxes, some of which are almost mutually exclusive:
Does it work?
How quickly?
Can it be purchased/made from commercially available products?
Can your protagonist use it without experiencing sudden and unfortunate death?
Finding something that checks the first box requires a basic understanding of the complex biominerals comprising your reanimated skeletons. Bone is best described as a composite material in which hydroxylapatite, an inorganic calcium phosphate mineral with the formula Ca5(PO4)3(OH), is embedded in a matrix of elastic collagen fibers made of the protein ossein. This is a simplified view that ignores most of the components necessary for full biological function, but hydroxylapatite and collagen are primarily responsible for the structure and strength of bone and are therefore the most important targets for Skel-O-Solve.
Starting with the hydroxylapatite, an acidic solution is probably the best way to dissolve it, though the process isnāt entirely straightforward ā this review evaluates eight different models of the mechanism and still points out where certain phenomena arenāt fully understood. While pure crystals can be dissolved fairly quickly in concentrated acids, the composite nature of bone hampers the process greatly, as the acid must slowly diffuse through the protein matrix in order to reach most of the hydroxylapatite. A fairly common home science experiment is to place a chicken bone in a jar of vinegar (dilute acetic acid) for at least three days, at which point enough of the hydroxylapatite has been dissolved to render the bone very flexible, owing to the collagen matrix still holding it together. Maybe your protagonist can organize a skeleton swimming league in a pool of vinegar? Though I suppose that would only leave you with bendy skeletons who were less susceptible to blunt-force attacks.
On the other hand, dissolving the collagen matrix is most efficiently done with a strongly basic solution, as strong bases are effective at hydrolyzing the amide bonds holding the protein together. If you can completely degrade these bonds, bones will become very brittle and the remaining hydroxylapatite will crumble into dust. Unfortunately this takes rather a long time and usually requires a significant amount of heat as well ā in the process of alkaline hydrolysis (an alternative to traditional cremation or burial), it takes about three hours at 160 °C in a pressurized vessel to complete the process with a concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide. However, if your protagonist can convince the skeletons to climb into confined spaces, I would recommend tricking them into a trash-compactor or a wood-chipper instead ā it would be faster.
While strong acids and bases both check box number one for effectiveness, they fall short on box number two for efficiency. Iām loath to leave your protagonist without any solutions to her problem, but anything that could possibly work in this type of situation would be extremely difficult/dangerous to acquire and would almost certainly kill your character faster than the skeletons could. Unfortunately, Skel-O-Solve just isnāt a thing at this point in time.

I was thinking of making some HNK ocs but i preferred making a totally new gem school and MANY OCs... here the first ones! (explanations under the Read More)
Chalcanthite, Painite and Wulfenite have no partner.
Chal is the older brother of Wulfenite, even if the two of them donāt get along so well: Chal is a total chaotic force, difficult to even talk with, other than being poisonous and acid. He can melt and re-build himself as he pleases, and he melts and re-forms in water easily. In winter he hibernates in a tub, much like Antarcticite, where he sleeps in the form of a blue gemmy crust for unknown reasons. He is REALLY strange.
Painite is the one who does the winter duty. Heās born in winter when nobody was here to take care of him and that made him very unpleasant to talk with. Heās snarky and his jokes are not funny. Not the best company. Heās also VERY lazy and does just what he has to. He seems selfish, but heās just very, very lazy...
Wulfenite is not less crazy as his brother Chal, but in a good way. He likes to call himselfĀ āgeniusā for his inventions, that most of the time are totally useless. Heās very fragile and breaks so easily that his brittleness is now a joke in the school. Heās more pleasant than his brother but is a very lone wolf, almost always selcluded in his lab doing strange experiments. When heās angry, he produces molybdenum that flows out of his body.
If marriage existed in this world, they would be married. They are never too far from each other and are a very very cute couple, even if Silli is very shy about it.
Taaffeite is one of the oldest, remembering when the New School was built. He took it well, like he takes well everything. Taaffi is blind and deaf, because during his formation another mineral was created into him, but didnāt form as a sentient gem: just like a parasite, the other gem didnt form, but is part of him. That mineral is in hisĀ āhornsā and heels, and helps him to feel the vibrations other than seeing and hearing. He doensāt need those senses to be the best fighter of them all! His problem is that Taaffi is too carefree and takes nothing seriously...
Sillimanite is the opposite: serious, hard-working and always ready to fight. He is as old as Taaffi, but has not hisĀ āsuperpowersā. In the years he lost half of his face and a leg, now in almandine quartz. He used to have very long hair but used almost all of them for his frequent breaking and injuries. Silli can seem frightening but has a really soft heart.
You already know Bone, right? It seems like he found a place to live!
Laurite is very old, as old as Taaffi and Silli, and one of the four that founded the New School over the Mountains. He is the Mom Friend, very calm and protective. He is the heaviest of them, so heavy that canāt run properly, but that makes him thicker than the other gems and much stronger. When he rarely breaks he can spill some very heavy liquid metal, but itās completely harmless and helps him re-attach his parts. Heās a war machine, but prefers to help others and peace over war.
Hercynite is the secretary: he likes math and to organize things. He doesnāt really like to fight but when he fights nothing can stop him: Hercy is a though, abrasive gem and can fight as well as the sage Laurite. Hercynite is the second youngest gem in the New School but his seriousness can make forget that heās still a baby. Please treat him well heās very young
Both of them have no family and no-one similiar to them, and this made them very very attached one to another.
Moissanite is the second youngest gem, but heās a born fighter: the second hardest mineral existing, just 0.5 points below diamonds. He HATES diamonds because they feel better than him. Mois, a proud thing, doesnāt accept the fact heās less than someone. Heās a hothead and a stubborn kid, but his partner can always make him calm down.
Putnisite is the real reason for the New School to be founded. Heās the rarest, strangest mineral existing, and he has not even a mineral similar to him: that makes impossible for him to found some pieces in case of replacement. Putni, being even the lowest in hardness of them all, easily loses pieces. When he lost his feet, the only option was to make him a wood one. Putni and the other rare 3 gems transferred in another school, built in a mountain and safer than the original one, where Putni canāt leave but is safe.Ā
Putni is very clever and has written a lot of books about nature and history, always trying to know more from Sensei. He canāt leave the school, but has given the young and troubled Mois the task of wander the Land and give him informations about the nature, the life and the morphology of the territory. That made Moiss much calmer, attentive and reflective than before.
