Hydrophane Opal
Opal is a solid substance made of hydrated spheres of silica. The spheres are deposited by fluids as they flow through rock – tiny amounts of silica will dissolve and reprecipitate as fluids move. The spheres are about the size of the wavelength of visible light, so when visible light reflects off one of the layers of spheres, the angle of reflection will be different from one light wavelength to the next. Light will spread out into a rainbow as it reflects off these spheres, creating the play of color effect seen as rainbows in these shots.
Precious opal from Ethiopia was deposited from hot fluids in a volcanic system, which left enough space in the structure for water to be able to enter and leave. Hydrophane opal, as these Ethiopian opals are called, will appear cloudy as light bounces from sphere to sphere when the gems are dry. When soaked in water that fills the open space, light can travel straight through without reflecting internally and the stone will turn clear and transparent.

Crystal Opal
What makes the gemstone stunning is that it looks like an underwater view of the ocean floor as light shines through it. There's a surreal quality about the gemstone that looks like a pocket-sized aquarium. The treasure is a very rare Oregon opal shown in its dry state. The seller says, "This material has hydrophane properties and can be greatly enhanced when soaked in water, but I don't believe that accurately portrays the opal being offered."
