Summary: The egos randomly have a conversation about the mustache trend of 2014 and Engie learns something about Dark and Wilford he didn’t know.
Ao3 version is here.
"Damn, I can't find it." Bim grumbled under his breath in irritation getting the other egos' that were in the same room's attention.
A few of the egos were in the living room alongside Bim; who was sitting on the couch with his legs crossed, a Word search book resting on his lap. He held the book with one hand, while holding the pen in the other, using it to scratch the side of his head as he scanned the scrambled words, but he looked like he was having trouble. On the left of him was Bing, looking down at his holographic phone, doom scrolling on TikTok; seemingly ignoring the other's plight, or perhaps engrossed in his scrolling to notice. Engineer Mark, or Engie, was on the other side of Bim, working on a prosthetic leg for Eric that was almost done; he just needed to work out some kinks. Stan the water man was in a chair next to Engie reading a novel quietly to himself. Wilford was in a rocking chair next to the window with a pipe in his mouth, though he wasn't really smoking, because bubbles were coming out of the bowl part of said pipe.
"Can't find what, Trimmer?" Dark sighed, who was in a recliner across from the couch and being the closest to Wilford, donning a pair of reading glasses as he looked over papers, most likely bills and plans for their upcoming videos.
"I can't find the word mustache," Bim groused lifting the book toward Dark who just squinted at it. "I've found much more difficult words on here, I should be able to find a word as simple as that. I even found Onomatopoeia!"
"Oh, it's right there, Pally!" Wilford was now suddenly behind Bim, leaning past his right shoulder as he pointed at the book, ignoring as the show host jumped back in surprise, bumping into Engie.
"JESUS CHRIST!" Bim gasped, almost dropping the book reaching up to readjust his glasses as he glared up at Wilford. "Don't do that Wil!"
"Hey, be careful!" Engie snapped keeping the prosthetic leg on the other side away from Bim. "This took me months to make!"
"Sorry," Bim whispered before looking down to see where Wilford was pointing and sure enough it was in the right corner and was spelled backwards. He looked up at Wilford dumbfounded and slightly annoyed. "Oh of course you'd find that word easily!"
"Hey, do you dudes remember the handlebar mustache trend in like 2014?" Bing suddenly and randomly asked, pointing toward Wilford with his thumb. "It kind of looked like Wilford's."
"Oh yeah," Engie gasped setting the leg to the side as he pointed to Bing snapping his fingers. "Where they had it on literally anything?"
"Man, I remember seeing them everywhere," Bim whispered as he circled the word mustache and went to move on to the next one.
"I remember it as well," Stan chuckled as he folded his novel, using his thumb as a bookmark, joining in on the conversation. "I had a Fanny pack with that same mustache on it… and a shirt… and a temporary tattoo of it on my left-."
"TMI Stan," Engie quickly interrupted causing Stan to pause, looking at him in surprise. "We don't need to hear that."
"It was a dare!"
"Still don't want to hear it," Engie sighed before looking back at the others. "But yeah, it was a crazy trend. Though it's died down a lot since then. Not pretty relevant these days."
"Oh, I wouldn't say that, champ," Wilford frowned, twirling his pink mustache as he spoke. "I've had this mustache since the 30s."
"Yeah, mustaches are still pretty hip." Stan agreed, pointing at his own receiving a nod from the pink ego.
"No I know that mustaches are still cool," Engie corrected quickly with a shrug. "I mean that the trend of having it on everything pretty much died down."
"Not with Wilford," Dark interjected with a chuckle, not looking up from his papers as he got the other egos' attention. "You should see Wilford's side of our room. Even has a pink and yellow suit with them."
"Wait 'our room'." Engie suddenly blinked causing Dark to pause finally looking up from his papers. "You two share a room?"
"Yes?" Dark arched an eyebrow as he looked at the confused engineer. "Why wouldn't we?"
"I mean, there are so many rooms here," Engie said still very confused, getting nervous at the look that the dark ego was giving him. "Why not have… separate… rooms?"
"It's because Darky and I are married, sport," Wilford chuckled as he walked up to the side of Dark's recliner, placing a hand on his shoulder, failing to notice the look of surpise on Engie's face the more he spoke. "Now I know you are young and all but surely you know that once you're married you-."
"Wow wait hold up!" Engie interjected waving his hands as he leaned forward, pointing between the two. "You two are married?!"
The room suddenly fell silent, the three other egos looking between Engie and the two married egos, who just looked back at him in shock, though Dark looked more irritated.
"… Yes," Dark drawled, annoyed at how shocked the other looked. "We are."
"But… How did I… When has this been a thing?!" Engie stammered in confusion, looking from them to the others.
"They've been married for years, Engie," Bim answered, slowly closing his book.
"Well, I haven't been around for years!" Engie argued.
"I've been here around the same time, kid," Stan countered, getting Engie's attention. "Even I knew they were together."
"I'm sorry," Dark set his papers forcefully down on the table in front of him, leaning forward, yanking his glasses off his face before pointing at Engie. "You've been living at ego Inc for how long and didn't know that Wil and I were together?"
"I-I don't know! I tried to avoid you the first few months of living here!" Engie exclaimed throwing his arms up in surrender. "You didn't exactly bring out the red carpet for me!"
"To be fair it's all red carpet in the main hall when you first arrive." Wilford chuckled.
"Not to mention you two are pretty… private."
"Just because we don't engage with public display of affection, doesn't mean we aren't together," Dark said causing Engie to press his mouth shut. Dark then glared at him, his aura flaring slightly causing the other to pause. "It's not a problem… is it?"
"No!" Engie snapped shaking his head in worry. "Nonono, not a problem! Just-just threw me for a loop is all!"
"My dude did you really not know?" Bing asked resting a hand on his shoulder. "This isn't a bit or anything?"
"No! Honestly, I didn't!" Engie shrugged Bing's hand off as he glared at him.
"Yan literally calls Dark father and Wilford Papa." Bim squints his eyes at Engie. "You couldn't put two and two together?"
"Literally every older ego adopts the younger ones in this house!" Engie motioned around the area. "How many dads has Eric collected by now!"
"He's got a point," Stan grinned motioning to Engie. "He's even slipped up and called me dad a couple of-."
"Hey, I told you to keep that between us!" Engie snapped his face suddenly turning red.
"Alright, everyone calm down," Dark sighed pinching his nose with a sigh before reaching up and rubbing his head. "Well, you're caught up Engie. Now you know that Wil and I've been together for years."
"I mean, I know I didn't see it before but it makes sense now." Engie shrugged.
Dark blinked at him before squinting his eyes at him. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"I'm… I'm just saying… considering you and Wil's… history." Engie tried gently, backing up on the couch a bit.
"I'm not sure I quite follow," Dark growled, causing Engie to freeze. "Please elaborate."
"Now Darkipoo, let it go," Wilford tried, resting his hands on both of Dark's shoulders. "There's no reason to get all-."
"Aren't you an amalgamation of Wil's ex and best friend?" Engie questioned, ignoring how Bim sucked air through his teeth looking at Engie in worry for his sake.
"I'm going to kill him this time," Dark growled as he got up, trying to storm toward Engie but Wilford held him back.
"Now Darky we don't want to do that!" Wilford protested, trying to keep Dark from advancing toward Engie, but was being dragged by the dark ego, whose aura started flaring. "He didn't mean anything by it I'm sure!"
"Just seemed like Wil's a little greedy is all?" Engie tried to joke beginning to climb over the couch, but that was the wrong thing to say.
"You're dead, Mark!" Dark snapped finally breaking free of Wilford and heading toward Engie, black tendrils seeping from his back and snapping toward the Engineer, who ducked.
"Shit, I'm sorry!" Engie snapped as he jumped over the couch, dodging tendrils as he ran. "I didn't know it was a touchy subject!"
"Your ignorance will be your death, you idiotic excuse for an engineer!" Dark snapped as he whipped another tendril at Engie causing him to scream. "How's that for touchy!?"
"Don't worry son!" Stan suddenly shouted, throwing the book behind him, and poofed into butterflies, before running after the two egos. "I'll save you!
"Not in front of them!" Engie yelled as he ran past Stan.
"Now, Mr. Darkiplier, how's about we calm down!" Stan tried, but fell on deaf ears as Dark continued to chase Engie. "I know! A nice tall glass of water always calms my nerves. How's about we try that?!"
Wilford sighed his shoulders slumping as he watched Dark chase Engie around the room, leaning on the chair that Stan had occupied, which continued to chase after them with water. He then looked over to Bing who had been staring at him with a grin, causing him to shrug in confusion. "What?"
"Well, your greed does sicken me sometimes, Wil." Bing joked causing Wilford to sigh, rolling his eyes a bit.
"I just wanted help with my word search," Bim grumbled watching as Engie tripped over one of Dark's tendrils before being pulled by one of them by his ankle, wincing when Engie let out a high pitched screamed as he was being dragged away.

(Whew finally! I’m so excited to start telling some stuff in actual order! This is the second part of Casting Call, which takes place after A Nice Alternative! This is the first official time all the boys learn about Magnificent! And we see just how powerful Dr. J’s hypnosis can be- and why Mag has his eyes set on him for JJ’s nine months.)

Jameson laughed into his tea, looking at his friends lounging in the small cluster of plush chairs around them, tucked neatly into the corner of the small cafe. “so when should I start charging for these outings with you two?”
“Huh??” Chase and Jackie spit at the same time.
“I am your therapist after all? Is this not a house call in a sense?” The Doctor chirped cheekily over the brim of his mug.
Jackie punched him in the shoulder. “Oh come off it! You know this ain’t what that is! This is- manly bonding time!”
“Yeah!” Chase echoes. Then he sat back in his chair, crossing his arms with a slightly pouted lips, “Besides- if you said my therapy stuff out here- I’d die of embarrassment.”
Dr.J chuckled, “Well, never you worry about that, Chase. It’s my oath to not share the information I get from sessions to anyone. So all your secrets will stay safe with me.”
Chase raised an eyebrow at Jameson then smirked, chuckling as he took a sip of his coffee. “Well… thanks Doc.” He looked down to his bugling backpack beside him- thinking of the secrets inside. Kinda the reason he went to the doctor in the first place, in a sense.
Jackie laughs and leaned back, sipping on a cold coffee slushie. “That is a relief- I don’t think the public would wanna see me instantly fall asleep every time we hang out.”
“Well if they give it enough time-“ Chase starts to tease. Jackie throws a packet of sugar at him.
Jamie chuckles, giving Jackie a look, “Don’t act like it's so simple, Jackie. I swear sometimes you’re harder to get into trance and down to sleep than Penny.”
Jackie shrugs, “what can I say? She takes after her old man!”
The three laugh at that.
After a minute or two of comfortable silence as the group enjoys their drinks, Jackie finally looks back at Jameson with a small head tilt.
“You know what I’ve been wondering? I know you do it every session with me… but do you ever do like- not hypnotism? In your sessions.”
Jameson hums and sets down his tea, “An excellent question. I am trained in a couple areas of therapy- hypnotism being my main. But, that doesn’t work for every client. Or else I wouldn’t get much business! Hypnotism in its true natural sense doesn’t work on everybody. And some problems need more talking things out then suggestions.”
Chase responds after a long sip, “yeah- me and the doc’s seshs haven’t used hypnosis for a couple months now.”
“Huh- interesting!” Jackie muses, “and weird to think about since you pull that watch out for me every time I’m in your office, Jay.”
The good doctor chuckles and goes to tap the vlogger’s forehead, “Your brain needs strong suggestions to help you sleep. It just doesn’t listen as well as it should.”
“That’s insomnia for you~!” Jackie sings, lifting his drink into the air like he’s about to burst into song in a musical. Chase and Jameson giggle.
Thinking about their sessions gets Chase contemplative, and he looks out the window towards the bustling street. It’s a beautiful day today- the sun is bright and the air is crisp and cool.
“...I wonder if Henrik and Alt got our messages…” Chase mumbles. Jackie pulls out his phone to check-
“Mmm Henrik’s was read- but no response. Nothing from Alt either.” He leans back in his seat, rocking its leg against the ground. “I wouldn’t take it too hard on the kid though- he seems like the type that needs time.”
Chase makes a face and leans more against the table. “Yeah I know… but. It feels weird to leave him. We know he lives so badly and- lives in that weird apartment. I just… wanna at least make sure he gets something to eat… at the very least.”
“That’s very kind of you, Chase.” Jameson responds gently.
“Aw you’re such a hero, bro! ”Jackie teases, winking at his clever joke.
The other boy blushes, “oh shush up- I just wanna help… I bet it’s been a long time since someone cared about him. And if the world won’t care about him- then… somebody’s got to right?”
Jackie’s face softens, “oh… he reminds you of...him. Doesn’t he?”
Chase looks away, a hint of pain in his eyes that he tries to hide.
Then the wall to their hangout bursts open, green electricity sparking from the hole. Two figures stand in the dust as people start to run and scream- their eyes glowing bright toxic green. It’s Alt and Henrik, whose eyes lock immediately on the crowd of 3 friends.
“N-no way-“ Jackie stammers, starting to back up. Jameson hurries back too as Chase gapes at the sight.
“Well well well!” Alt sings as he strides into the cafe, sending arches of energy after people lingering too long. “It seems we missed the memo!” His eyes were wild, smile manic. It was a completely different Alt then the one they met the other day.
He goes to grab Chase by the front of his shirt, laughing.
“And who is this?? Another fuckin’ char-“
But then, his eyes flicker- taking in his freckled face, pale eyes and brown hair. This… wasn’t the hero- yet… he seemed familiar to Alt somehow… but he couldn’t conjure up the memory. …It didn’t matter- he had to focus on his targets.
But, Alt freezing gives Jackie just enough time to rush at Alt and give him a kick to his arm- making the glitch cry out and drop Chase.
“Chase, get out of here!” The father cries to him, and Alt’s eyes flicker more, gripping at his head some.
“...c-Chase…?” He whispers, looking confused. Chase stares at this, not knowing what to do. Jackie yanks him up by his arm then pushes him towards the exit. “Go, you idiot!” He gives the hero a pointed look and this seems to snap Chase out of his self induced trance. He nods then grabs his bag and sprints out the door.
Henrik tries to rush after him but Jameson steps in front of him, giving him a hard stare.
The motion snaps Alt back to reality and he sees the tail end of Chase’s retreat before he turns to Jackie and giggles. He crouches down into a sloppy fighting stance, head tilted to the side like a cat’s.
“That’s the company you keep?” He taunts, “I know a sad piece of shit when I see one- are all your friends charity cases, Jackie?”
Jackie glares at Alt and bares his teeth, clenching his hands into fists. “Shut up- you realize you’re insulting yourself right?”
Alt giggles, shrugging. “Oh of course- I know I’m nothing but a freak thief!” His gaze gets hard, voice dropping to a serious tone. “You didn’t want to befriend me. You wanted to pity me- because leaving a sad weakling like me alone would weigh too heavy on your conscience.”
The vlogger choked slightly, his face turning red. Maybe- that was true at the beginning but… “No Alt that’s not true-! We-“
“It doesn't matter now though!” Alt interrupts, madness slipping into his voice as his shoulders roll with glitches and green electricity. “My master reminded me of my place~! And he’s asked me and Schneep… to put you in yours-!” And with that, Alt lunges to attack, Henrik following soon after.
Jackie quickly intercepts the glitch’s attack, blocking it and using the boy’s momentum to throw him back. Alt glitches back to his feet and bares his teeth at Jackie.
Raising his fists, Jackie tries to call out, “C’mon Alt! You don’t have to do this! We wanted to help you!”
The glitch’s eyes flare up with green power, “Help! All I am to you is another box to check off! Another soul you ‘helped’ so you feel less shitty about yourself!” He snarls as he sends a power charged punch to Jackie’s stomach. The blow feels like it caves in Jackie’s midsection, stealing the breath from his lungs as he rolls onto the floor. He tries to catch his breath, but all that comes out is a ragged cough. Alt looms over him and then strikes his foot against Jackie’s head, pinning him to the floor.
His grin is sadistic. “Now who needs the help?”
Henrik’s fighting is stiff and to the point. Like he’s a boxing action figure. It’s easy to track his moves. Jameson dodges quite easily- him and his brother used to take boxing lessons after all. Yet, the kindly doctor doesn’t want to strike his friend. He’s looking for an opening- something he can use to trip him up. Jamie recognizes the glazed look in his eye- he’s in a trance. He might be able to snap him out of it with a good jolt, a shock. Schneep’s movements have him moving back quickly- soon he might run out of room before he’s cornered.
A whoosh of strong wind blows through the destroyed cafe- as a bright blur rushes through the space. Suddenly, Alt is thrown off Jackie and driven into the wall. Bro Fantastic has the glitch by his jacket, dangling him just barely off the floor against the stone. The hero’s eyes are filled with silver blue light as he growls, “Hands off of my friend.”
Alt coughs, spitting up a bit of blood before grinning at Bro with bloody teeth. He laughs almost manically, throwing back his head- then driving it into the hero’s. Bro cries out and lets Alt go, blinking stars out of his eyes. The glitch drops to the floor like an agile cat before he pounces on the hero, tackling him. The air around him is buzzing with electricity as Alt looks down at Bro with hungry eyes.
“Finally! Now the real fight can begin!”
The entrance of the superhero was just the distraction Jameson needed. Henrik’s head whips to see the hero, and while his head is turned the doctor swipes the actor’s feet from under him. Henrik hits the floor with a loud crack. The green in his eyes sputters as he gasps, feeling a shock go through him. He pants, blinking around dazedly, his ears ringing so loudly it’s hard to think.
Jameson is over him in a second, checking to make sure he’s okay.
“Henrik?” He tries to sign to the actor. Henrik is slow to answer but eventually he croaks out, recognizing the doctor’s face. “D-Dr. Jackson..?”
Then, the gentleman suddenly seizes up- the green power trying to light up in his eyes again. He yells in pain and tries to curl up into a ball, grabbing at his head. Jameson starts to panic- he has no idea what this is… but he has to try to help his friend calm down. He quickly pulls out his pocket watch and picks up the gentleman under his arms, dragging him away from the other fighting and into clear lighting. He had to make sure his friend could read his lips.
“J-Jamie-” Henrik whimpers, pain etched into his face. “H-Help I’m-!” The doctor makes a shushing motion and dangles his pocketwatch in front of his face, letting the clock swing back and forth in front of his eyes. He takes one of Schneep’s hands and starts a slow even rhythm against his palm, in time with the swinging of the watch.
The doctor talks in slow soft tones, despite the actor not being able to hear him fully. Henrik whines trying to take the doctor’s hand in comfort, pulling on him like he wants to tell him something.
“Juwel- there’s- a voice-!” He blurts out in urgency, “He.. is telling me- t-to hurt you-” Thick tears gather in Henrik’s eyes and his lip wobbles. “I… I don’t want to!”
Jameson’s heart breaks at the sight. A voice… huh? Okay… he can work with that-
He squeezes Henrik’s hand tightly before starting the rhythm again, “Henrik, I need you to look at the watch, alright? Just- imagine we’re in my office. In my office there’s no voice- there’s no violence. Only, you and me and… relaxing…” He taps twice along Henrik’s hand and almost instantly Henrik starts to breathe easier, focus coming back to the watch, to the doctor.
Dr. J smiles encouragingly, “Good- now, let’s get rid of that voice, shall we?”
Bro yells as he hurls the glitch over his head and across the cafe. Alt skips like a stone on a lake before he rolls and coughs, trying to get back on his feet.
“Go easy on him, dude!” Jackie yells harshly at the hero.
Bro bares his teeth, his eyes fixated on the target. “Tell that to him first!”
Alt unsteadily gets to his feet and sways back and forth like he might fall over. Then, he’s laughing again as he charges at Jackie and Bro. A split second before he’s at them- he glitches, teleporting to kick Jackie in the face. The father is down, blood gushing from his nose. Bro jumps and tries to help him, when he feels the electric spark in the air and smell of tinged metal. He just manages to see the flash of green before he’s catching the next blow from Alt with his hands. The glitch looks surprised, then Bro whips him away like he weighs nothing.
Once he has a second to breathe, the hero bends over slightly, trying to catch his breath. His eyes leave trails of silver blue light in their wake, an overabundance of power glowing in his veins. He still has fight left in him- but Alt was giving him a run for his money. He can’t seem to shake him off! And Chase doesn’t want to harm him more than necessary. He is a hero after all.
“Awwww is the wittle hero getting twired?” Alt slurs out cockily, getting up again and holding his stomach. His face is littered in scratches, his shirt and pants torn in places. His bandana is loose, showing off his neck- a faint but noticeable scar marring the skin. But- now Chase can see it- there’s claw marks on his chin and face- even blood in his hair from what look like scratches or deep wounds. Neither him nor Jackie held weapons… this must be the work of whoever Alt was running away from.
“You are too-” Bro calls out, putting a hero-like projection into his voice. Alt tries to laugh but Bro steps closer, “Don’t try to laugh it off Alt! You don’t want to do this… we’re your friends.”
Alt seems to stop for a moment, blue flickering weakly in his eyes. But then, he snarls, baring his canines like a feral cat. “No you’re not! You’re pathetic weaklings my master wants eliminated- that’s the only way I can become strong!” He laughs again and starts to approach, “After all? Who else can claim to have felled the great ‘Bro Fantastic’?!”
Bro’s eyes are pleading, “Alt- you’re already strong. You have nothing to prove to us- just the way you live, the way you fight… it shows everyone your strength!”
“Lies!” The glitch growls, electricity buzzing in his hands. “Magnificent knows me better than you! How could you know anything about me?!” Alt yells in anger and throws a ball of electricity Bro’s way.
But, this time, instead of dodging, Bro stands tall- still. He lets the green lightning hit him, making him stumble a couple steps and clutch a table to stay upright. Alt freezes, another blow ready but-
Bro looks him in the eyes and grits out through his teeth, “I’m not gonna fight you anymore... “
The glitch stares at the hero, unsure of what to do- then, his eyes darken and he hurls another shot at Bro. The hero grinds his feet against the wooden floor to stand upright from the blow, but he doesn’t move to attack.
Alt starts to yell in anger, preparing another blast, but then he feels a sharp tug on his arm, pulling him back.
“Alt!” The glitch turns to see who is stopping him and his eyes widen as he sees- “S-Schneep?”
The gentleman’s eyes are clear and blue and he tugs on Alt through tears. “Please- you do not need to do this! You must not let Magnificent take over your head!”
The glitch is speechless, blue flickering again in his eyes. Schneep takes this opportunity to tug on him more, trying to pull him away. “Come! Come! The doctor- the doctor fixed me-! He can fix you too!”
Yanking his arm out of Henrik’s grip, Alt stumbles back and grips at his head. He meets Henrik’s eyes and growls, “You’re disobeying our orders!” He snaps at the gentleman, arcs of light dancing on his arms. Henrik backs up and holds up his hands.
“Please Alt-” He tries to plead, “You are being used! We both were! That Verrückter does not care for us!”
“Shut up!” The glitch screams, electricity sparking bigger, bouncing off the walls and zipping dangerously in the air around him. Henrik stumbles back, fear in his eyes.
“What do any of you know about me?! What do any of you know about strength? Power?” He hisses through his teeth. “Magnificent said he’ll teach me- he’ll make sure I never get fucked over by this world again! So what the hell do you know?!” He bellows, his voice catching at the end, sounding hoarse and raw.
The room is near silent, the only sound the sharp zing of Alt’s overflowing electricity.
Finally, a voice speaks up- “... I know you are scared-” Henrik breathes. Alt shoots him an enraged look.
Then another voice joins, “I know you think you’re all alone.” Bro calls out as strongly as he can, “But you don’t have to be- we can be there for you!”
“And we want to be!” Jackie wheezes from where he’s kneeling on the ground, holding his jacket over his nose. “That phone thing- our numbers! that wasn’t just cuz! We want to get to know you- be your friend!”
“...Help you-” The final voice joins the fray, Jameson stepping up next to Henrik. His eyes are kind and it makes Alt take a step back, his power dying down slightly. The doctor outstretches a hand, “Please Alt- let us help you.”
Alt looks at Jameson’s hand in disbelief. He seems to hesitate, studying the hand with a slight tremor in his body. Green and Purple are fighting in his eyes. He takes a shaky step back, his head shaking. “N-No- No! I don’t need help! I’m strong- i.. I’m supposed to be-” His voice breaks at the end.
Jameson takes one more step, “Sometimes, the strongest thing you can do… is admit you need help.”
Hesitation, fear- the emotions flicker on Alt’s face as he stares at the offering. His head- his voice… they are screaming at him to fight, to throw his enemies to the ground, to enjoy the taste of the powers Magnificent has in store for him.
But… deep down? Alt is scared. Of what he’s doing- what Magnificent wants to do to him. He’s starting to think a bit more clearly.
He looks to the only one who can understand him now, flickering green eyes searching for reassurance. “He… he helped you?” He asks Schneep.
The actor nods and steps up. “Yes, he did. And I am more than sure he can help you too.”
Alt looks back to the outstretched hand then finally takes it, pulling Jameson a bit closer. “Please…” He whispers, just like he did to Jackie and Bro the day before, “Please- help me!”
Jameson and Henrik smile softly at him, and both of them lead him to the couch in the corner. The glitch twitches from his overabused power- and the voice in his head that has him quivering, wanting to curl up into a ball. Henrik leads him gently to sit and then takes his hand, covering it with his other.
“Do not worry, my friend,” He catches his eye and smiles cheerily, despite the circumstances. “You do not need to do this alone.”
Alt’s eyes water at that- it makes his chest ache in a way he’s not familiar with… but it’s not a bad feeling. He winces as more lights fight in his eyes and then he looks to Jameson, nodding his head to the doctor to begin.
Jameson smiles and holds a hand out to Alt again, “Alt? Do you trust me?”
The glitch hesitates before nodding and going to reach for his hand.
But, the doctor surprises him, going to grab his wrist and yank gently but firmly on it, as he presses a hand against Alt’s head. He commands in a soft voice, “Then, sleep.”
Alt’s head immediately lulls and he starts to fall towards the doctor, immediately induced into trance. Jameson gently pushes him to rest against the couch, Henrik helping as well.
Dr. J calmly encourages Alt, giving his wrist a gentle squeeze. “Very good Alt- now just relax… no one here is going to hurt you. I need you to breathe- feel the tension leave your body with every exhale…”
Alt slumps more against the couch- and Jameson lets him go. “That’s it- just let yourself drift. This is going to help you…” He watches Alt twitch in front of him, obviously fighting with something in his head. “I know there’s a voice inside that's making it hard to hear me… something you’re afraid of-”
Alt stiffens slightly and mumbles out breathlessly, “‘M… not afraid-”
Jameson shushes Alt slightly, with another soft exhale of “Breathe… Breathe with me Alt-” The two work together to get his breathing back down to a slow controlled manner before the doctor continues. “It’s okay to be scared. The voice is overwhelming your mind and controlling your actions- but you alone know the power of your own mind… your thoughts- and the power of your true self. You can become louder than the voice, Alt. You can beat it back-”
He tries to shake his head, gripping Henrik’s hand harder as he pants, sweat dripping down his face. “I… I can’t- not… strong- e-enough…”
“You are stronger than you know.” Jameson encourages in hushed affirmation. “And so is your mind. It’s convinced you that you are weak. But you don’t want to believe that, right? Your strength is different than his… your strength comes from accepting the truth. It comes from battling your fears- it comes from the kindness etched deep into your soul. Find it Alt- find that strength in your mind and grab it! Use it to fight back the dark!”
The glitch’s head tosses back and forth, his teeth bared in a pained grimace. Alt’s eyes open with a strangled gasp as they fill with green and purple light- but now blue light is fighting against it- more powerful than it has before. Henrik holds Alt tight as the glitch grunts, trying to struggle against the darkness- the oppressing force of magic trying to pin him down.
Finally, in a harsh cry, Alt’s back arches as the blue finally wins over the corruption. Henrik and Jameson jump back in fear. They watch with bated breath as Alt slumps down, the light dying from his eyes. Alt blinks dazedly, trying to look up at the two men in front of him when he suddenly sways and starts to collapse. Henrik yelps in surprise and rushes to catch him. He lays him back down on the couch and with a small smile, pushes back the glitch’s sweaty hair. “Good job, Alt…”
From behind them the sound of very crisp clapping can be heard. Bro looks up from where he was helping with Jackie’s bloody nose and he stands up quickly. He thrusts an arm out to try to protect the rest of the boys.
From the wreckage of the cafe’s facade- a sharply dressed figure emerges. His eyes glow with the same power that held Henrik and Alt before- a green gray cat mask covering half of his face. A tattered cape bellows behind him- seemingly buzzing with static. At the sight of the figure, Henrik whimpers and tries to curl up with the passed out Alt- trying to protect himself and the glitch.
Bro Fantastic glares at the smug looking figure, his eyes burning with blue silver fire once again.
“Well Well-” The man says, looking around at the damage. “You all defeated my puppets!” He studies the half destroyed cafe and makes a face. “Oh dear- this is not the place for a dramatic conversation… why don’t I add a bit of ambiance?” He snaps- and green magic zips around to change all the lights to blue that still remain in the cafe.
The boys all look at the lights in confusion- all except Jackie. He looks at the lights with a chill going down his spine. Why… Did that gesture… that phrase- seem so familiar?
“What the hell are you playing at?” Bro snaps, “Who the hell are you?”
The man blinks slightly, then throws his head back laughing. Suddenly, he teleports so he’s in front of Bro- towering over him slightly.
“This?! This is the hero who ‘freed’ my cub?” He laughs before grabbing Bro’s chin- making the hero squirm. “This- is the great Bro Fantastic?!” With a whip of his hand and a burst of magic, the man throws Bro into the wall.
He dusts himself off as Bro hits the floor, before throwing out his cape in a dramatic manner, like he was performing on stage.
“Mm- I thought my puppets would have done a better job of singing my name,” He sighs, before casting a glance at his audience and taking a big sweeping bow. “My name- is Magnificent.”
“Really?” Bro wheezes as he gets up, “What kind of name is that?”
Magnificent raises an eyebrow at the hero, “Says the man named, ‘Bro Fantastic’?” Bro’s face flushes red as he bristles with anger.
The magician brushes the hero off without a second thought and in a blink, appears over to where Jameson is. He grabs the doctor by the arm and yanks him up, jostling the gentleman’s glasses askew. Magnificent studies the therapist with a critical eye- then gets in his face with his own, tilting it back and forth like a curious cat.
“So you… are the one who broke them-” He muses. Being this close- something strikes Jameson about the man- something he can’t quite put his finger on. But- it also feels like...does he know this man?
Jameson trembles slightly in his grip, trying to pull away. But, Magnificent tilts his head up with a clawed finger, baring sharp teeth. “Just a regular doctor- who dares to call himself a ‘hypnotist’...” He purrs, going to dig nails into Jamie’s neck. “How amusing~”
The doctor tries to yell- push his way out of the magician’s grasp- he’s strong! Magnificent’s eyes glow with cold yet dangerous power as he starts to squeeze Jameson’s neck. “But, I can’t let you continue to break my toys, good doctor-”
Bang! Something solid and sharp cracks against the back of Magnificent's head, making him drop Jamie and fall back. He snaps furious black pitted eyes up and sees Henrik now standing over him, a chair grasped in his hands. The gentleman’s hands tremble but yet he stares at his former master with pure hatred. Magnificent bares his teeth, starting to get up.
“You ungrateful little whelp-!”
The chair’s legs are thrust in front of Mag’s eyes as Henrik threatens to hit him again. “You-! You stay away! We will not be your playthings anymore!”
The dark magician fumes at this, eyes flaring with green and purple power as he rises to his feet. Henrik readies a strike again, refusing to back down.
Then, another body stands in front of Henrik, blue eyes matching the fire of the magician’s. Bro Fantastic and Magnificent stare each other down, the air feeling electric from the force of power both of them are keeping at bay.
Finally- the stalemate seems to snap as Mag turns his head to chuckle. He eyes the rest of the boys before bowing slightly and taking a step back. His image fizzles and buzzes with static, his eyes stark green against the texture.
“Well gentlemen” He chuckles, “I do so look forward to your next performance~”
With another mad cackle- the villain fizzles out of sight- and the lights of the cafe flicker back to normal.
Now, it seems that everyone can breathe…
Bro and Henrik go to help Jackie and Jamie. While they assess their injuries- a quiet groan is heard from the couch as Alt’s eyelids slowly flutter open. He knits his eyebrows at the ceiling in confusion.
“..this- is not my apartment…” He slurs. The other boys look at each other- then can’t help but laugh. Alt jerks up at the sound, eyes wide, then his face pales at the sight of the others.
“I’m afraid not,” Jameson chuckles. Alt looks from face to face, trying to remember how he got here. When it all comes rushing back- it hits him like a train, leaving him winded.
Jackie kneels down next to him. “It all coming back to you?”
Alt grips his head and grunts out a “yeah.” He takes a second, then he turns slightly misty eyes to the others.
“I… I’m so sorry-” He chokes out, rubbing at his face. He doesn’t even know what else to say.. He grabs his bandanna and holds it tightly, trying to find some comfort as he pulls it up to hide in.
The others exchange a look of worry before Bro speaks up. “That guy… Magnificent.” Alt seems to shudder. “... is that who you’re trying to run away from?”
A shaky nod.
The others wait patiently before the glitch speaks up again, gripping his arms tightly. “He… he tricked me into working for him- cuz I stole his fucking cat. But it’s not… just working for him. He.. he hurts me- controls me. He plays these magic mind games with me until i… I don’t even know who I am anymore-”
There’s a quiet pause as the others take the information in. “Henrik?” Dr. J asks, turning so the gentleman can see. “What is your situation with Magnificent?” He had a knowing look in his eyes, more like he was prompting Henrik to speak up. The deaf actor exchanged a look with the doctor before nodding.
Henrik grabs at one of his arms, his shoulders shaking. “It… is not good. He- makes my head all- a...empty inside it.” He gestures to his head, making a motion similar to the sign for crazy. “Then- he fills it with only things he wants. I have to follow- He gives no choice…” He suddenly steps back from the others, holding himself tighter as he whispers. “He… took me from my time-”
“Your time?” Jackie repeats with a raised eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
Schneep meekly looks up to address his friends. “...Please do not think of me different- but.. I am- from long time ago… from 1933.”
Everyone’s eyebrows shoot up. Well- except Dr. J who only nodded.
“What?!” Bro exclaims, grasping at his hair. “But- that’s… that would make you-” He starts mumbling to himself, going to count some things out on his fingers. “Like- over a 100 years old!”
The actor blushes, rubbing the back of his neck. “I am… not actually- He- uh.. Lift me from my time- then put me here…” He perks up a bit, trying to find some way to smile. “It is not all bad! This time has so many wonderful things! Work for me…colored hair! New friends to make! Maybe even ways to fix mein hearing!” But, then his facade falls. “But.. Magnificent taints me… he- makes me only a puppet…” The teal haired man hugs himself, looking ashamed.
Jackie, Bro and Jameson look at the two boys, watching as they both wallow in their despair. Jameson has enough of it though and gently grabs Henrik’s arm and puts him next to Alt. He stares down the men and huffs through his mustache. “Now- let’s stop all this negative talk right here.” He rubs the bridge of his nose. “I can’t pretend I understand all this. Especially the ‘magic’ bits. But, it seems very clear to me that what Magnificent did to you..It’s not your fault.”
“But-” Alt tries to argue, “I… I agreed to work for him!”
The doctor puts up a hand to stop the pickpocket. “That still doesn’t make you at fault. From what I gathered in this short amount of time… he’s a twisted power hungry bastard who likes to use his ‘hypnosis’ against anyone he can get his claws on. You two unfortunately got caught in his net.”
“But-” Henrik pipes up, “What can we do? He has… spells and tricks to make us obey him! We’re.. Trapped-”
Bro steps up next to Jameson and claps a hand on his shoulder, grinning down at the two. “No you’re not. Cuz we’re going to help you!”
“... you are?” Alt squints at the hero skeptically. Suddenly a hand comes up and rustles his hair and Alt tries to bat him off- seeing a grinning Jackie go to join Bro and Dr. J.
“Well- we already agreed to help you get away from that guy-” The father adds, “Now- we just gotta add Henny to the mix. No big!”
Alt stares at the floor, tears threatening to build up again. “... even after all of this… you still wanna help me?” He shuts his eyes, feeling a tremor run through him. He’s so tired- he feels so broken. “...why?”
There’s a pause, before a warm hand cups his knees, forcing Alt to look up and see Dr. J smiling kindly at him. “Because Alt,” he said quietly, “Today proves more than ever- that you are way more than you appear. You- are good… and kind. And this madman took advantage of that.” The doctor’s eyes sparked almost mischievously. “But- we can flip the script.”
The glitch’s eyebrows narrowed. “...how?”
Jameson laughs and holds out his pocket watch. “That phony may think he knows true hypnosis- but his is nothing but artificial. I can teach you both the power of your own minds.” He smirks, and Alt blinks at him. He’s.. skeptical.
“Fighting mind control- with hypnosis? That seems a bit backwards,” He muses. The kind doctor chuckles but shakes his head. “It may sound foolish- but i believe there is no force greater than human will. You two were proof of that today. I provided guidance- but it was you who broke through in the end.”
Henrik beams at this- but Alt finds himself looking away. Feeling doubt weigh heavily in his stomach.
Bro comes to pat Alt on the back lightly. “No matter what happens though,” He grins, “We’re gonna be right by your side.” He nudges Alt with a wink. “After all, what are friends for? “
And just like that- the stone weighing him down is lifted and Alt feels his chest fill with warmth. He smiles slightly, meeting everyone’s eyes.
“Yeah… thanks guys.”
As Alt gets to his feet, watching Bro and Jackie gather Henny up and try to give him a well-meaning noogie- he feels something pressed into his hand. He lifts it up to see… a business card?
“For my office,” Jameson explains with a smile, coming to stand by his side. “I am more than willing to teach you some of the things I know after hours. Free of charge.”
Alt’s cheeks flush and he shakes his head, “Doc- I.. I can’t do that to you- I…”
Dr. J stops him, “It’s no trouble at all, really Alt. After meeting that guy? I want to take him down as much as you do.”
Alt raises an eyebrow with a chuckle, “Didn’t peg you for the fighting type, Doc.”
He shrugs, “There’s many ways to fight.” He taps his temple with a knowing smile. “Not just physically.” Alt can’t help but smile back at that.
Notes: I would like to Thank @arcanefujoshi and @buvy1 for helping me on this post and @jewishdainix for making me laugh.
Story notes:The rune used in this fic is entirely made up for plot purposes. This is also an au where Jayce and Talis are Jinx' mentors, Silco found the letter so him and Vander, along with Milo and Claggor, aren't dead, and Vi and Jinx are still close sisters. Enjoy.
It was supposed to be a normal day at the lab.
Viktor spent almost all morning going over some calculations that he and Jayce had been working on for the past few days. He had given Jinx the day off to spend time with either her sister, Vi, or her new flame, Ekko so he could have some peace and quiet while he worked, knowing that he couldn’t get much done due to her… sometimes harmless… pranks. Now he was sitting at his and Jayce’s shared desk, cradling a Man of Progress mug full of coffee in one hand while sporting a pencil in the other, writing away in his notes while waiting for Jayce to get back. He noted how his partner looked far more excited than usual. How he was so eager to head out that he just gave him a quick peck on the cheek and told him that he would be back soon, heading out of the door with quick haste.
Viktor didn’t mind it. He knew how Jayce was when he got like this, knowing that he was just hurrying to bring whatever he had to surprise him. Viktor couldn’t help but think it was endearing and sweet that Jayce liked to surprise him with things, like a cool gem he found on his way from a walk, or present him with a gift that he’d thought he would like. Either purchasing said gift or making it himself.
Viktor couldn’t help but smile as he looked across the desk at a metal object in the shape of a rose, lying on its side. Putting down his pencil, he reached across the desk, gently grabbing the flower from its spot and looking it over, rubbing the pad of his thumb around the grooves of its petals. He remembered when Jayce first gifted him the flower, coming straight from the forge to give it to him for their one-year anniversary. He could never forget the look on his face that was covered in ash and sweat, looking at him with those big puppy-like eyes, trying to gauge if he liked the gift or not. And Viktor loved it, keeping it on his desk where he spent most of his days just within his reach, holding it close during his free time.
Cherishing that fond memory, he gently set the rose back down before returning to his notes, picking up his pencil as he began to write, though that action was short-lived once he heard the lab doors slide open causing him to pause mid-writing shifting in his chair to see who was coming in, but he already knew who it was without having to look.
Just as he suspected, it was none other than Jayce walking right through the doorway with a slight pep in his step as he did so. He had a bright, excited smile on his face as he clutched a small metal case in both hands, holding it securely to his broad chest as he walked. Once his eyes landed on Viktor, his smile only seemed to brighten more, making big strides to get to him.
“Viktor!” He exclaimed as he made his way to their shared desk, watching as his partner slowly began to stand, using the crutch that was next to him as support. Jayce then rubbed the back of his neck nervously as he spoke. “Sorry for keeping you waiting. I know sitting there for a while hurts your-,”
“Oh hush, you worry too much,” Viktor chuckled, watching as Jayce smiled before leaning forward to place a kiss on his cheek, which he happily leaned in to. “I can sit in an uncomfortable chair for a bit.”
“Yeah I know,” Jayce chuckled before taking one of Viktor’s hands into his own, rubbing circles in the top of his hand with his thumb. “But I missed you.”
“You were only gone for a few hours,” Viktor argued, rolling his eyes but having an amused smile on his face as he did so.
“Well, I did all the same.” He whispered, placing a kiss on the top of the other’s hand.
“Ever the clingy one,” Viktor chuckled, looking into Jayce’s warm brown eyes before casting them to the case in Jayce's other hand. He slowly motioned to it before grinning at Jayce. “Is this the surprise you’ve been heavily guarding for the past few weeks?”
Jayce blinked at Viktor at first before following his gaze, his eyes widening as he gasped. “Oh yes!” Jayce smiled as he took his hand away, clutching the box, before looking at Viktor once more. “Yes! I finally finished it! This may be very beneficial for our work! It’s gonna blow your mind.”
“Color me intrigued,” Viktor grinned, watching as Jayce set the box on the table next to them, “What revolutionary discovery do you have hiding?”
“This,” Jayce grinned as he unlatched the sides of the box and twisted a dial in the front before backing up, both watching as the box slowly opened on its own, revealing the objects inside.
Viktor blinked in surprise, his eyes flickering between the objects that were neatly placed in the metal casing. They were a bunch of tiny metal plate pieces. Each had symbols carved in the middle that he was all too familiar with, having worked with said symbols with Jayce to create the hex gates and other hex-tech-related projects. However, there was one he couldn’t recognize. In the middle, there lay a metal plate that was slightly bigger than the others and had a symbol carved in the middle that he had never seen before. The symbol itself had a tiny oval-shaped dot in the middle and was surrounded by three squiggly lines with points at the end that faced counterclockwise.
“I just finished creating these pieces at the forge yesterday,” Jayce explained, the grin never leaving his face as he stood behind Viktor, placing both his hands on either side of Viktor’s shoulders, looking between him and the case. “Noticing anything different?”
“Hmm, this piece,” Viktor began, gently picking up the metal piece in the middle from its spot and holding it up, looking it over as he spoke. “I haven’t seen this rune symbol before.”
“Exactly!” Jayce began gently shaking Viktor’s shoulders before letting him go. He then walked beside Viktor toward their desk, moving some notebooks over until he found the book he was looking for. “Sky found this book about ancient rune symbols and their meanings by chance. It mostly has descriptions of runes we already know. Or so I thought,” Jayce then opened the book, flipping through it until he found the page he needed, aiming the book toward Viktor, pointing to the very symbol that was ingrained in the metal piece that Viktor was holding. “It’s called a Revert Rune.”
Viktor blinked at the page, gently setting the metal piecing back in the case before stepping closer to Jayce, leaning on his crutch to get a better look at the page, skimming it over. “Revert Rune, you say?”
“Yes,” Jayce whispered before setting the book down on the desk between them, both leaning down to look at the book as he pointed to its meaning. “It says that the Revert Rune can turn back any object to an earlier state of being.”
Viktor thought long and hard about Jayce's words, his eyes lighting up as a small smile formed on his face. “So in theory, if we were to able to… experiment with this rune, we could essentially-.”
“Rewind anything to an earlier state. Almost brand new,” Jayce finished for him, receiving a smile and a nod from the other. He then turned back to his desk, pulling out his own personal notebook and looking over the pages. “It’s almost like how Ekko was able to create time travel,” He then pointed to the notes he copied from Ekko explaining his theory to him before helping him and Jinx create the machine for the distinguished innovators' competition (Which he was proud that they won). “It’s like it’s rewinding time but the object itself and not its surroundings. Now, if my theory is sound and if we can get this to work, imagine what good we can do with this?”
“Medicine that has expired could be usable again,” Viktor began, making his way over to Jayce, looking from his notes to his partner. “Broken machines considered unfixable could be easily repaired.”
“Exactly! It’ll make things a little bit easier,” He then looked down at the case, placing a hand on the metal plate with the symbol in question. “We just have to test it to be sure that it’ll work.”
“Well,” Viktor began with a shrug before picking up a wrench by the handle and throwing it up in the air, catching it by the head of the tool, and holding it out to his partner. “What’s stopping us from doing so, hmm?"
Jayce looked from the wrench to Viktor, a knowing grin forming on his face as he gave his partner a nod, taking the wrench from him. “Let’s get to work.”
...
So both Jayce and Viktor had spent the rest of their morning and afternoon working on this new project. Jayce had already made all the materials and figured out all of the blueprints that they needed, so all that was left was the assembly of the prototype they were going to use to cast the Revert Rune. It wasn’t hard to create between the two. It was almost a fusion of two machines they had created already. First, they created a replica of the machine that created resonance when they first tried to stabilize the hex crystals, the Runic stabilizer they liked to call it, and the hex claw but instead of shooting a laser, the energy built up from the hex gem that will house the Revert Rune will transfer through the hex claw, creating a blast that will hit the desired target without the risk of hitting anything or anyone else.
It took about a few hours, but with both Jayce and Viktor’s brilliant minds working together, they were just about finished. All that was left was to place the metal pieces in the right order. So Jayce began to gently place them where he thought they would be best looking over his schematics as a reference.
Viktor watched Jayce work, leaning on his crutch for support as he did so. He smiled as he observed his partner, watching as he paused to look through his notes, wanting them to align properly.
“Just have a few more pieces to place before I do the Revert Rune,” Jayce explained as he placed another metal piece in. “Then we can test drive it.”
Viktor hummed in acknowledgment before turning their attention to their desk, picking up some notes they had worked on for this project. However, his eyes trailed up from the paper, looking at a pile of books that had been sprawled out across the table. Most of them just looked like Jayce’s usual notebooks. Probably filled page by page with ideas. Only one book stood out to Viktor. It was a navy blue book with the Talis family crest, with the words photo album written in black. Intrigued, Viktor set his notes down before reaching across the table and picking up the book from where it sat. He held the book in his hands, running his hand over the blue fabric of the book cover before slowly opening it, his features softening upon seeing what was inside.
It contained photos; Viktor knew that it was a photo album and all, but it wasn’t just any photos. It was photos of Jayce, all from when he was a newborn to now. The first had multiple pictures of Jayce’s mother in a hospital bed, cradling a tiny Jayce in her arms. He couldn’t help but smile, looking at a picture of Jayce with his eyes nearly open, looking at the camera with a furrowed brow. His curiosity gets the better of him as he begins to flip through the pages, looking at the photos of his partner from when he was growing up. He saw pictures from when he was one, covered in icing from his first birthday cake, pictures of him when he was 4 sitting on his father’s lap as they took a picture near a forge and anvil. He saw a 6-year-old Jayce holding up a hammer with a big grin, showing that he was missing a front tooth. Viktor flipped through the pages, secretly gushing at how adorable Jayce was as a kid, pausing when he saw a picture of Jayce standing next to a famous magician, wearing the magician’s top hat that was too big for his head, a big bright smile on his chubby face, causing Viktor to chuckle. Jayce hadn’t lost that bright look in his eye even after all these years.
Meanwhile, Jayce placed the last few pieces onto their prototype, stepping back to look it over with a smile. Everything looked like it was in the right place. Now, all that was left was placing the important piece. He went to grab the Revert Rune from the case only to pause when he heard chuckling. Realizing it was coming from Viktor, he turned to his partner to ask him what was funny, only to pause, blinking in surprise. Viktor was at their desk leaning on and holding his crutch in one hand while reading a book in the other. Only he wasn’t reading. Upon closer inspection, he realized that Viktor was looking over his family album.
“Ah, I uh see you found that,” Jayce chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his head, hoping that his mom didn’t put any embarrassing photos in there.
“Not very hard to find when it’s on our desk,” Viktor grinned, looking up from the book to Jayce, motioning to the book as he spoke. “Almost every page is just of you. Now I know where that big ego of yours came from.”
“Haha,” Jayce laughed as he rolled his eyes before smiling at Viktor, watching as he went back to looking over the book. He then walked up to the other, leaning on the table beside him as he looked at the book as well. “My mother just took all the extra photos she had and placed them all in one book. She thought it was a good idea to give them to me. She said it showed how far I had come.”
“Hmm, she has so many pictures of you,” Viktor commented before looking up at Jayce with a smile. “You are well loved.”
“I know,” Jayce whispered, looking from Viktor to a picture of him as a kid holding up a trophy for first place in an inventors competition for kids, his mother posing in the picture with him, her hands on his shoulders, a proud look on her face as she smiled at the camera. “I’m very lucky.”
Viktor smiled as he watched Jayce skim through the pictures, running his hand through the pages like he was reminiscing about his childhood. Viktor looked from Jayce to the book, motioning to it as he sat down, getting Jayce’s attention. “Why don’t you show me your fondest memories before continuing our work?”
Jayce blinked in surprise, a smile forming on his face as he pulled up another chair. “Alright,” He whispered as he sat down, flipping through the pages of the book until he found the page he was looking for, pointing to the one of him and his father. “This one was one of my earliest memories. This was the grand opening of my father’s tool factory. We were next to one of the first anvils that Dad purchased.”
He then flipped to the next page, pointing to the one where he was holding the hammer. “This is when I made my first hammer at the forge. It wasn’t as good as my dad’s, but he wouldn’t use any other hammer after that.”
Viktor listened to Jayce speak intently, a fond smile on his face as he listened to him talk about his childhood, watching as he flipped through the photo book, getting rather animated as he explained things about his past.
“Oh, this was my favorite,” Jayce chuckled, pointing to the picture of him taking a picture with the famous magician. “After my mother and I were saved by the mage, I became obsessed with magic,” He paused before looking down at some of the hex crystals and giving Viktor a light chuckle, “If you uh... Couldn’t already tell.”
“What? No,” Viktor teased, squinting his eyes as he shook his head, his voice laced with slight sarcasm, causing Jayce to laugh.
“But anyway, for my birthday that year, Mother took me to a showing of all the famous magicians that traveled to Piltover, and my favorite magician happened to have a showing. I was so happy to take my picture with him. He even gave me his top hat. Sure, it didn’t fit at the time, but it fits perfectly now.”
“Oh I’d love to see that,” Viktor chuckled, looking from the picture to Jayce. “Do you have it in the lab with you?”
“Uh… No.” Jayce whispered, his eyes darting around the room while his face turned red, causing Viktor to snort.
“I only tease,” Viktor then motioned back to the book. “It was sweet of your mother to take you to something you really enjoy.”
“Yeah it was,” Jayce grinned. “She always tried to indulge me when I became obsessed with something. However, I was devastated when I found out that some magicians didn’t perform real magic, only illusions. Though it didn’t stop me from learning illusions like magicians, I got a book called Magic for Dummies to learn basic tricks.”
“Oh, now this I have to see,” Viktor said with a smirk, resting both hands on the hook of his crutch and leaning in closely.
“Oh, I don’t know,” Jayce began nervously, rubbing the back of his head as he leaned between himself and Viktor, setting the book down in front of them, causing the other's eyes to flicker to the book. “It was a long time ago, and I may not be as good as I-.”
“Oh, don’t give me that,” Viktor interrupted, looking from the book back to Jayce, “Modesty isn’t a good look on you. Come on, just one trick.”
“Well, there is one I liked to do to Catlyin ever since she was little,” Jayce smiled as he leaned forward, causing Viktor to look at him in question. “It takes a lot of practice,” He then reached behind Viktor’s ear, causing the other to freeze. Jayce only smiled as he pulled an object from behind Viktor’s ear. “And a tiny distraction.”
Viktor’s eyes widened, seeing that Jayce was holding a cog up by his two front fingers and thumb. But it was just any cog it was the cog that Jayce sent through the hex opening when they tested their theory for the first time. He kept it after all those years, finding it very sentimental to him, always keeping it on his person in his vest pocket. He patted his vest pocket, looking inside to find it empty. A look of shock and utter confusion etched his features as he looked at Jayce, who had a smug grin on his face.
“H-How did you-?”
“Like I said,” Jayce grinned, flipping the cog between his fingers as he spoke. “Takes practice and a little distraction. Placing the book on the table, which caused your eyes to follow, gave me the distraction I needed to pull this off.”
“So it’s just glorified pickpocketing, no?” Viktor asked, arching an eyebrow, watching Jayce pausing from flipping the cog, holding it between his pointer finger and index finger.
Jayce began to stare off, thinking over his words, before nodding his head and looking over at Viktor with a grin. “Yeah, you could say that,” He said, watching Viktor roll his eyes with a chuckle. Then he looked from him to the cog before holding it out to Viktor. “Here, I know that this is important to you.”
“Thank you,” Viktor then took the cog from Jayce, looking it over before placing it back into his vest pocket as he spoke. “I admit, it is a pretty good magic trick. You’d make a fine magician.”
“I don’t know about that,” Jayce then sat on the edge of the table, resting his hands on his sides. “But it did help me make new friends when I was little. Kids in my class thought it was the coolest thing.”
“Hmm,” Viktor smiled fondly at that as he looked back down at the photo book, filled with pages of his partner running a hand through the pages as he looked at pictures of a tiny Jayce looking so bright and full of life.
Jayce watched Viktor closely, a small smile forming on his face as he gently nudged him. “So, what was your childhood like? Do you have any cute baby pictures that you’re hiding?”
Jayce watched as Viktor paused, his eyes lifting from the photos to stare ahead, causing his smile to fall. He noticed a small frown forming on his partner’s face, watching as he pulled away from the pages, now clutching his crutch with both hands curling in slightly.
“No,” He whispered, looking down at the ground as he nervously tapped his crutch on the tile floor. “I don’t have any photos from when I was a child. Cameras were a luxury for my family. My parents relied on drawings, but those were lost with time, and uh, my parents aren’t really around anymore to tell me where they are.”
Jayce frowned at this, his heart sinking slightly at the confession. Come to think of it, he had noticed how much Viktor used to be a minimalist. When their relationship grew, he had asked Viktor to move in with him, and when he agreed, all he had was a few small boxes to his name, and none of them were pictures of his family or any of him. He felt like that was something he should have noticed, but he didn’t.
“As for friends… I didn’t have those either,” Viktor then turned toward Jayce, finally looking at him as he spoke. “It was hard for someone with my… limitations to make friends. I couldn’t keep up when the others played, and others mocked me, so I stayed mostly to myself.”
Viktor went silent after looking to the ground again, which only made Jayce’s heart ache. After all these years of knowing Viktor, he had never known much of Viktor’s past. He knew that he was a zaunite and was from the Undercity, but he never talked much of his childhood. And now he knew why.
“But hey, since I never had a camera, I’m able to draw up some fine blueprints from the practice.” Viktor tried to joke, forming a small grin. But it went away when the joke didn’t land. Feeling like he ruined the mood, he turned toward their current project. “Anyway we are getting off track. Maybe-.”
However, Viktor fell silent when he felt a warm hand rest on his shoulder, causing him to stop in his tracks. He slowly turned toward Jayce, whose pretty brown eyes were boring into his own, gently rubbing circles into his shoulder with his thumb.
“I’m sorry,” Jayce whispered, giving Viktor’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze listening as his partner let out a sigh. “I didn’t know. It must have been hard.”
“It’s alright,” Viktor whispered with a shrug. “It's all behind me now. You can’t really change the past.”
Jayce gave him a nod in agreement, looking at the ground with a frown before a small smile formed on his face, looking up at Viktor as he shook his shoulder slightly. “Well, if I had known ya when we were little, I would have been your friend.”
Viktor blinked at this, looking from the ground to Jayce, who had that same infectious, beaming smile he always had. He couldn’t help but smile in return, feeling a bit warmer at his kind words. He slowly reached up with his free hand, resting it on the top of Jayce’s as he spoke. “I know, and I’m grateful to have you as a friend and much more now.”
“Me too,” Jayce whispered, watching as Viktor lifted his hand to his face, placing a small kiss on the top of his knuckles before staring at him with a warm smile. They both stayed like him for a few seconds longer before Jayce blinked, his eyes widening as he shook his head. “Oh, we, uh, lost track of time, huh?” He questioned, pulling his hands away as he pointed to the clock.
“It appears we have,” Viktor agreed before motioning over to the machine. “Shall we get back to it?”
“Yeah yes, uh let’s-let’s do it.” Jayce chuckled as he closed the photo album before following Viktor over to the machine. They needed to place the final metal piece before they tested it.
...
After placing the Revert Rune piece in the right place and looking over the schematics to see if they aligned perfectly, they felt they were almost ready. Jayce double-checked his notes one last time before looking over to the machine. “Okay, I think it’s ready. You have the glove that controls the hex claw on, right?”
“Just about,” Viktor whispered as he secured the glove tightly on his hand. Once it was on, he turned to Jayce with a grin, giving him a thumbs up and causing the claw to do the same. “Done.”
“Good,” Jayce whispered before turning to another case that held most of their hex gems. “If we are right about this, we will need two Hex Gems to make this work. One to get the machine running and to store up all the energy and the other in your glove to control the hex claw.”
“When all of the built-up hex energy ricochets off of the metal pieces hitting the Revert Rune last,” Viktor added, moving the hex claw as he spoke. “The hex energy housing the Revert Rune magic will flow through the hex claw, creating a laser-like beam that will hit any object we so desire.”
“Exactly and I have just the thing.” Jayce grinned, holding up a wrench covered in rust. “This rusty wrench!”
“Ah you mean the wrench I lent to you that you’ve left outside for months and remembered when I needed it?” Viktor questioned, arching an eyebrow at Jayce.
“The very same,” Jayce said as he shied away slightly, watching as Viktor rolled his eyes fondly. “But hey, this is an opportunity to make it up to you by fixing it!”
“Well, set it up here, opportunist.” Viktor then motioned to an empty spot near the machine.
With a grin, Jayce walked over toward the machine, placing it on an empty spot on a table at the far end of the room, not wanting to hit anything important if the project backfired. Once he set it down, he grabbed a dial box that was connected to the machine itself through wires. He then walked over next to Viktor, both standing behind their desk and keeping a short distance from the machine.
“I created this separate dial that’s connected to wires so that we can control the speed of the machine from here in case anything were to happen,” Jayce explained, setting the dial down in front of him, receiving a nod and a hum from Viktor in response. “Will you be able to control the hex claw from here?”
“Hmm, I don’t see why not,” Viktor shrugged, placing a pair of goggles on his eyes before lifting his gloved hand up, causing the hex claw to move, a tiny blue laser light forming and aiming right at the rusted tool. “I’m ready when you are dear.”
“Right,” Jayce whispered, looking from the dial and pulling down a pair of goggles he had on his head over his eyes as well. “Let’s do this.”
“Start slow with the dial,” Viktor stressed, keeping his eyes concentrated on the tool itself. “Don’t want too much build-up right off the bat. Just build up over time.”
“Got it,” Jayce whispered, beginning to slowly twist the dial, starting at one before looking up. He watched as the metal around the machine began to spin, causing the hex gem to let out sparks of energy that were slowly bouncing off of the metal pieces. “It’s starting.”
“Good,” Viktor whispered, using his hand to aim the hex claw on the tool. “Give it another turn.”
“Turning now.” Jayce then turned the dial-up, causing the machine to begin to build speed, making the gem burst with energy. The runes on the metal pieces began to glow blue brightly, flickering now and then.
While that was happening, the hex claw was beginning to shake, filling up with so much magical energy, which caused Viktor to concentrate harder to keep the laser steady.
Jayce noticed this his brow furrowing as he looked over to Viktor. “Vik, are you okay? We can stop if-.”
“It’s fine,” Viktor interrupted, keeping his eyes on the tool as he spoke. “It’ll hold fine. Just crank it a little bit more. We are close.”
Jayce gave him a nod, looking from his partner to the machine that was spinning pretty fast, his eyes landing on the Revert Rune that was now flickering with light. This next one should get it to glow like the others. Holding his breath, he twisted the dial once more, praying to Jenna that this would work.
With that next turn of the dial, the machine only worked faster, sparks of blue flying everywhere at first, causing Jayce to worry but he sighed in relief when the energy finally aligned and hit right on the Revert Rune causing it to glow brighter than the others which in return caused the hex claw to hum with energy the light in the middle of the claw growing brighter with each passing second.
“I think that’s enough build-up,” Viktor began loudly over the humming. ”When I give the order, press the button!”
“Okay.” Jayce nodded his head, placing his finger over the top of the dial, looking between Viktor and the machine that was shaking slightly
Viktor watched the between the rune and the tool closely, waiting for the right moment. Once he felt the rune was bright enough, he looked back at the tool, aiming the claw directly at it.
“Now!”
Jayce didn’t hesitate to press the button before bracing himself. He watched as a beam of blue light shot from the hex claw hitting the tool directly. His eyes widened when blue static formed on the tool, shooting up and down it in sparks. But he gasped, pointing to the tool in awe. “Look!”
The tool began to shake, rattling on the table, but that wasn’t what had Jayce in awe. The rust on the tool was beginning to disappear slowly. Not only that, but a chip on the end of it was beginning to reform. It was almost as if it was never there in the first place.
“Whoa,” Jayce whispered in awe, watching as the tool returned to its perfect state.
“I think that’s enough!” Viktor said through gritted teeth, causing Jayce to blink. His features softened when he noticed his partner now clutching his wrist, which was beginning to shake. “I don’t think I can hold it much longer!”
“Right, right!” Jayce panicked before grabbing the dial, twisting the one down to zero, and pressing the button, causing the hex claw to shut off entirely. “There it's off!”
Viktor let out a sigh of relief, letting his hand fall to his side to rest. He then used his other hand to take off the glove, causing the claw to go into rest mode. Once it was off, he set the glove down before taking his goggles off, watching as Jayce walked around the desk toward the machine that was winding down, lights flickering from it until they were out completely.
Jayce could not stop grinning as he looked at the tool, lifting it from its spot and looking it over. All the rust was gone, and there wasn’t a single scratch on it. He then looked over to Viktor, whose eyes widened at looking at the tool. With that, Jayce flipped it in the air before catching it, walking up to his partner and holding it out to him. “See? Good as new.”
“Incredible,” Viktor whispered, taking the wrench from Jayce looking it over in shock. “It looks like when I first bought it…It-.”
“It worked!” Jayce exclaimed in excitement before grabbing Viktor by the shoulders, leaning, and placing a kiss on his cheek, causing the other to pause in surprise. “The rune actually worked! Think of the number of people we are going to help with this!”
“I know, I know,” Viktor chuckled, setting the tool down and placing both his hands on the top of Jayce’s. “Once again you’ve managed to create something phenomenal.”
“No,” Jayce interrupted, grabbing Viktor’s hands and holding them close to his chest. “We created something phenomenal. I couldn’t have done this without you.”
Viktor could only smile at Jayce’s kindness, holding his hands tightly in his own before looking over to the tool. He then let go of one of Jayce’s hands to pick up the tool, looking it over. “Thank you for finding a way to fix this. Definitely beats having to replace it.”
“Of course,” Jayce grinned before looking around the room. “I wonder what other objects we could revert with this.”
“I imagine there are an infanant amount of things we can revert,” Viktor grinned. However, he froze as he began to stare off, thinking for a second before he spoke, looking up at Jayce. “I wonder… if we could revert anything… Organic.”
Jayce blinked at that, looking back at Viktor in question. “Organic?”
“Yes,” Viktor nodded his head as he thought it over. “Like food, sick plants… maybe even people, I wonder.”
“How about we take it one step at a time, V.” Jayce chuckled, patting the top of Viktor’s hand that rested now on his shoulder. “Though helping sick plants revert to a healthier state sounds like a good idea.”
“Of course it is. I suggested it.” Viktor joked, watching as Jayce chuckled before pulling away, walking over to the desk where the dial sat while he made his way over toward the machine, looking it over. “Do you think we should tell Heimerdinger of our discovery?”
“How about we wait until we have it a bit more fortified. Then we could present it to him,” Jayce suggested, picking up the dial and turning toward Viktor and about to head for the machine. “We might want to keep this a secret from Jinx as well. Otherwise, she might-.”
“MIGHT WHAT!?” Jinx snapped, jumping in front of Jayce somehow.
“SHIT!” Jayce snapped, dropping the dial to the ground, failing to notice it crack once it hit the ground, but Jayce failed to notice as he glared at Jinx, who was laughing at his outburst. “Jinx! What the heck?!”
“Oh come on,” Jinx said, rolling her eyes and wrapping her arm around his shoulder, causing him to huff in annoyance. “Lighten up, you should be used to it by now.”
“I thought I gave you the day off, Jinx,” Viktor grinned, trying not to chuckle at Jayce’s scared expression, not noticing the machine beginning to spark lightly behind him, “To spend time with your friends and sister.”
“She did.” They heard a voice say, turning to the entrance to see Vi, Caitlyn, and Ekko walking in, Vi being the one to speak. “Or at least she was until she thought it was a good idea to visit her two favorite mentors.”
“Yup got it verbatim Vi,” Jinx grinned before eyeing Jayce up and down. “So what’s this I hear about presenting something to Heimerdinger? What are you two trying to hide from me?”
“N-Nothing!” Jayce tried looking over to Viktor, who just shrugged. “We uh, we were just.”
“What’s a Revert Rune?”
Jayce blinked, looking from where Jinx was standing, finding that she had disappeared, looking around the room until he found her at their desk looking over their schematics and notes. ”Hey! Can you put those down, please!?” He snapped, storming over, trying to take the notes from her, before she let out a gasp looking at Jayce in shock.
“Are you making a machine to revert objects!?” She asked, looking up at Jayce in shock, watching as he tried to snatch his notes from her, only for her to move them out of his reach at lightning speed. She then began to pout. “Why wasn’t I invited to help?”
“Because this may be dangerous for a young inventor to handle and knowing you, you would try to test it on the whole lab,” Jayce stressed, trying to grab his notes but failing to do so. “Jinx would you please!?”
“Okay Pow, that’s enough teasing.” Ekko tried as he walked toward them, but his protest didn’t seem to work.
Viktor watched the whole ordeal in slight amusement, about to speak, when he saw a spark in the corner of his eye. He slowly turned towards it, his smile dropping when he saw the machine was up and running and was slowly picking up speed. “Uh… Jayce?”
“I’m sure it’s not that dangerous,” Jinx scoffed, finally letting him take his notes from her, placing her hands on her hips as she watched him shuffle his note back in order. “I’ve done projects with explosives before.”
“Which got you suspended and us a stern talking to from Heimerdinger,” Jayce added as he glared at Jinx, who rolled her eyes.
“Jayce?!” Viktor tried again as he slowly backed up, looking between Jayce and the machine. The Revert Rune began to glow as the hex claw began to rattle with energy.
Viktor wasn’t the only one to notice as Vi looked from the machine to the two arguing scientists. “Uh, guys?”
“Come on, you act like I’m a child that doesn’t know what she’s doing!” Jinx argued, throwing her arms up in frustration.
“Well, one I’m your mentor,” Jayce said, holding up one finger before holding up a second one. “And two I’m older than you, so that makes me the boss, and when I say you can’t work on a project I deem dangerous, then you are not working on it. If one thing goes wrong with this Rune, it could-!”
“JAYCE THE MACHINE!” Vi snapped finally getting his attention.
Jayce turned from her to the machine, causing him to freeze. It was up and running and was surpassing the speed that they originally stopped at, causing the desk it was on to shake and rattle. He then looked over to the dial that was cracked and broken on the floor, turning it on with no way of turning it off. He then looked back to the machine, blood running cold when he saw Viktor standing right next to the hex claw that was shaking like crazy about to go off at any minute.
“Wa-wait,” Jinx froze, looking at the machine in fear. “What’s going-?”
“EVERYONE RUN NOW!” Jayce shouted, shoving Jinx toward the others before heading toward Viktor. “V GET DOWN!”
But Viktor couldn’t move; he was frozen with fear as he watched sparks fly from the machine, the claw suddenly being forced open as the beam in the middle began to glow brighter.
Jayce ran toward his partner and without any hesitation, he wrapped his arms around him and turned his back toward the machine, shielding his partner from the glowing claw.
“JAYCE, VIKTOR!” Jinx shouted, trying to run for them, only to be grabbed by Vi who wrapped her arms around her, pulling her out the door. “NO!”
Suddenly, the hex claw exploded as a burst of blue energy covered the room before encasing the whole room in smoke. After waiting a few seconds, Jinx forcefully pulled herself from Vi, as she, Vi, Caitlyn, and Ekko rushed back into the room, all of them pausing in shock at the state of the room. The whole lab was covered in blue smoke, making it hard for them to see anything. Jinx was frozen in fear, her body trembling as she tried to look for any sign of Jayce or Viktor.
“Jayce?… Vik?” Jinx tried, scanning the room over.
“Are you guys alright?” Ekko tried coughing a bit as he waved smoke from his face.
“Say something!” Jinx pleaded her hands in tight fists, praying to hear them say something. Fearing the worst, she went to step forward when she heard coughing from the other side of the room, causing her to gasp. “… Jayce?”
The others listen closely to hear the cough as well, looking at each other before following Jinx, trying to look through the smoke. They all made it toward where the machine was, seeing that it was now on the floor in pieces, the hex claw lying on the ground in tatters.
Jinx waved the smoke from her face, suppressing a cough as she looked about. “Jayce?” She tried again following the coughing that was now closer. “Vik? are you-?”
Before she could finish, she froze mid-question, her eyes widening in shock as she dropped her hands to her sides, the smoke finally clearing for her to see.
“Jinx?” Vi asked, walking up from behind her, looking from her to what she was staring at. “Did you find-?” Even she fell silent, her eyes widening in disbelief at what she saw.
Ekko and Caitlyn finally made it toward them, about to ask why they went silent when they caught a glimpse at what they were looking at. Their own eyes widened in disbelief as well.
“Caitlyn… are you seeing this?” Ekko whispered, leaning in toward her.
“Yes but… but how?”
Jinx stared at the two figures in front of them who were on the ground, having coughing fits from the smoke. She was too stunned to speak, unsure if this was really her two mentors in front of them, finally finding the voice to speak. “Jayce… Viktor?”
“Ugh, my head,” Jayce groaned, his eyes closed as he reached up to rub his temple, his brow furrowing when all he felt was fabric touch his head… Did his clothes feel looser? What happened? Why did his head hurt, and why was he on the ground? What did-?
Suddenly, he froze, his eyes shot open as he remembered the explosion and how Viktor was right next to it. “ V ?!” He shouted before he froze, reaching for his neck. Why did his voice sound so high? But before he could question any further, he heard groaning next to him that almost sounded like Viktor… but something was different. He looked ahead to see a figure rising from under the smoke. ”Viktor?” He questioned, watching as the figure rose from the smoke. “Are you okay-?”
Jayce's words died in his throat when he didn’t see his partner rise up from the smoke, causing him to crawl back in surprise. Instead, he saw a little boy, no older than 9, slowly make it to the sitting position, groaning as he rubbed his head. Jayce looked the boy over in caution, trying to figure out how a boy got into the lab, but before he could question, he watched as the boy hissed before clutching his leg in pain. Jayce looked the boy over, his dread only growing when he realized that the boy was wearing Viktor’s clothes, only they were baggy on him, and Viktor’s leg brace hung loosely on the leg that the boy was clutching. At that moment, it finally clicked in Jayce's head. This wasn’t just some random boy. This boy was Viktor, his partner.
“ V ?” Jayce tried, reaching for him slowly. “Viktor is that really-?”
Jayce froze, looking down at his arms with a gasp, seeing that they were engulfed in the sleeves of his shirt, which was now way too big for him. Shakily, he rolled up his sleeves, looking at his hands and arms in horror, seeing that they had lost their muscle mass and were now small, child hands. He then touched his face, finding that his cheeks were chubbier, obviously developing some baby fat. He then grabbed fists full of his shirt, which was far too big for him. He was definitely a kid also. But how?! Why was he and Viktor kids now!? It didn’t make sense! How could he-?
Jayce froze when he heard static, turning to see that the machine was in pieces next to them, his eyes landing on a metal piece next to him with the Revert Rune in clear view, causing him to gasp. The rune caused this. Viktor was right. It did work on organic matter.
“J-Jayce?”
Jayce gasped, looking from the Rune to Viktor, who looked at him in horror, still clutching his leg as he looked him up and down. “Is it really you?”
“Y-Yeah,” Jayce whispered, finding it weird how high his voice was now. “It’s me.”
Viktor then squinted his eyes shut, an involuntary sniffle escaping him as his eyes began to water. “It hurts.” He whispered, cradling his bad leg close.
Jayce frowned at this, watching as a few tears began to stream down Viktor’s face, hastily wiping the tears from his face when they began to fall. He had never seen Viktor cry so easily, and it scared him, always seeing Viktor so strong-willed, rarely ever shedding a tear in front of others. Without a second thought, he clutched his clothes tightly to keep them from falling as he made it to his knees, beginning to shuffle, making his way over to Viktor, sitting beside him before wrapping his little arms around him and hugging him close. He felt as if Viktor didn't hesitate as he wrapped his arms around him, hiding his face into the crook of his little neck as he began to silently cry, trembling in Jayce’s grasp. Jayce couldn’t help but sniffle, too, his eyes beginning to water as he hugged Viktor close. He didn't like seeing him upset. Viktor was scared. Jayce could tell that much, but he didn’t blame him. Jayce was absolutely terrified as well. He didn’t know if they could turn back or reverse this. Both are not sure if they will be stuck like this.
“Jayce?… Vik?”
Jayce looked up with a gasp, seeing Jinx, Ekko, Vi, and Caitlyn looking down at them in shock and slight fear. He couldn’t help but cower slightly, hugging Viktor close as he looked up at them, finding it slightly intimidating at how they were now towering over them.
“Is it really you?” Caitlyn asked as she crouched down to be at their eye level.
“Y-Yeah.” Jayce whispered giving her a nod.
“H-How?” Ekko whispered, resting a hand on his temple, trying to wrap his head around this. “How did this-?”
“That machine,” Jayce interrupted, looking over at the remains of it. “It did this.”
“Can you turn back?” Vi questioned next looking between the two kids.
“I… I-I don’t know.” Jayce sniffled, hiding his face in Viktor’s hair feeling as his partner hugged him tighter.
Jayce suddenly found it hard to keep his emotions in check, a lump forming in his throat that hurt so badly his lower lip began to tremble, the tears in his eyes finally leaking down his chubby face. He was scared, very scared of what was going to happen to him and Viktor, causing him to tremble as he fully hid his face in Viktor’s hair. Besides feeling sad and frightened, he was beginning to feel embarrassed for breaking down in front of everyone, always being the rock for the others, and was always confident in any tricky situation, so this feeling was foreign to him. He wanted nothing more than to pick Viktor up and find a place for them to hide, but his thoughts were interrupted when he felt a hand in his hair. He let out a gasp, looking up to see Caitlyn looking down at him with a warm smile.
“It’s okay, Jayce,” She whispered, petting his head gently. “We’ll figure this out. Let us help you clean up the lab a bit and get you two proper clothes to wear. Then we can figure out how to get you two back to normal.”
Jayce sniffled a bit, using his large sleeve to wipe the tears from his eyes as he gave Caitlyn a small smile, nodding his head. “Okay.”
“Just sit tight,” Caitlyn said as she got up, turning to Vi. “Vi, find my mother and have her pick up some small clothes. She’ll know where to get some. Ekko, go find Heimerdinger and tell him what has happened while Jinx and I will work on fixing the place up.” She watched as Vi gave her a nod before running out of the room.
“Jayce, Vik,” Jinx began, a look of regret on her face as she looked at them. “This is all my fault. I’m so sorry.”
“Jinx, It was an accident,” Caitlyn said, placing a hand on her shoulder and watching as she turned to her with a frown. “They know that, but I’d give them some space. Let them have a moment to calm down.” She watched as Jinx looked from her to her two former mentors, then back to her, giving her a nod and beginning to help clean up. She then turned back to Jayce and Viktor, watching as Viktor peered up at her with big owl-like eyes still hiding into Jayce's shoulder slightly. She just gave them reassuring smiles. “Just try to calm down while we clean up okay?”
Jayce gave her a nod, watching as she began to help the others, leaving them alone on the ground, hugging each other tightly. He listened to Viktor’s quiet sniffles, able to feel that he was still trembling, causing him to look down at him. “You okay, V?”
“…I’m scared, Jayce,” Viktor whispered, clutching Jayce’s loose shirt tightly as he squinted his eyes shut.
Jayce frowned at this beginning and felt like he could cry again. But he tried sucking it up as he hugged Viktor tightly, rubbing circles into his back. “I know… I’m scared too. But whatever happens, we deal with it together, right?”
“Yeah,” Viktor sniffled as he pulled away, looking at Jayce with a nod. “Together.”
Jayce then leaned forward, resting his forehead on Viktor’s, both holding each other tightly. Hanging onto each other like a lifeline, afraid that the other would disappear if either let go, feeling like they needed each other in that moment.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
Description: Jayce and Viktor discover a new rune that is able to revert anything and anyone and when a science experiment goes wrong, both Jayce and Viktor are reverted back into children. While the others try and figure out how to turn them back, both scientists must learn how to navigate life as a kid again.
After a while, Jinx and Caitlyn were able to get the lab cleaned up, picking up papers that were scattered, as well as tools and objects that were knocked down from the explosion and throwing away what was burnt or damaged. However, they didn’t throw away Jayce and Viktor’s new machine that caused this even if it was broken, placing the pieces back on the desk it was on before to show to Heimerdinger when he arrived Once they got everything cleaned up, they both helped move Jayce and Viktor over to a sleeping cot on the far end of the lab that they kept there in case one of them was there too late and needed to stay the night. Now they were both sitting side by side on the cot, both wrapped up in blankets, trying to calm down more and relax.
Viktor was sitting on the cot to the left of Jayce, his bad leg, now devoid of his metal brace since it no longer fit him and was now propped up with a heading pad over it to help ease the tension in his leg muscle to help minimize the pain. He was a lot calmer than before and was able to stop crying, now only feeling embarrassed. The boy wasn’t sure why he wasn’t able to control his emotions; even if he had aged down significantly, he was still an adult and should be able to control his emotions as such, but for some reason, he felt it was a lot harder to do so. Now he was just staring off into space, clutching the soft blue and red blanket tightly around himself, but he blinked back into reality when he heard Jayce speak with clear annoyance in his now high-pitched voice, causing him to turn to the other and what he saw made him smirk.
He tried to suppress a giggle, watching as Jinx crouched in front of Jayce, pinching both sides of the boy’s face and lightly shaking his head as she did so.
“Jinx, let me go right now!” Jayce snapped angrily, glaring at her as he tried to sound stern, but it only made him look cuter to her, which made her gush harder.
“Awww, look at those chubby cheeks,” She teased, still pinching his face, causing her to grin at how angry he looked. “You two look adorable now!”
“Knock it off!” Jayce swats her hands away before clenching his fists, still glaring at her, his big, round eyes.
“Oh don’t make that face,” Jinx laughed, obviously not intimidated by Jayce’s angered expression. She then reached up and ruffled both Jayce and Viktor’s hair. “I can’t help it when ya guys look like this now. Too adorable.”
Viktor just let her ruffle his hair causing him to grin. Usually, he didn’t really like anyone besides Jayce touching him. Even at this age, he was weary of letting anyone touch him, but he knew he was safe with the people he was surrounded by. Once she pulled away, he turned to Jayce, watching as he pushed her hand away before leaning back against the wall, crossing his arms with a huff, beginning to pout, avoiding eye contact with Jinx, which caused him to smile. He wouldn’t admit it out loud, for Jayce’s sake, but Jinx was right; he did look adorable right now.
Compared to Viktor, Jayce was a lot smaller now and had a cute, chubby face, like he hadn’t grown out of his baby fat yet. He looked no older than seven or eight, which made sense since Viktor was a year older than him anyway. So, the machine took roughly 24 years of their lives.
“Jinx, leave them alone,” Caitlyn said as she walked up, ignoring how Jinx rolled her eyes before getting up from crouching and walking over to a nearby table and sitting on top of it. Caitlyn then walked up to Jayce, crouching in front of him, watching as his angered features softened when he looked at her, uncrossing his arms and scooting toward her. She just smiled at him before lifting up her hand and holding out a leather bracelet toward him. “Found this where you both were on the ground. I figured it slipped from your wrist after… you know.”
Jayce’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, seeing that it was his bracelet with the stone the mage gave him, causing him to look down at his arm, pulling up his sleeve to look at his wrist, which was now empty. Since his wrist was smaller now, none of his clothes fit anymore, which meant the bracelet he hand-crafted to hold the important gem no longer fit him. He held out his hand as he looked from the bracelet to Caitlyn, watching as she gently placed it into his own. He then let out a sigh, clutching it closely as he looked at her. “Thank you.” He whispered as Caitlyn gave him a nod.
“Of course,” Caitlyn whispered back before she slowly stood up, looking down at Jayce as she spoke. “Though, I would put that somewhere safe since it no longer fits. I know it’s’ very sentimental to you.”
Jayce gave her a nod before looking down at the bracelet with a frown. He should have made it more adjustable to now fit his smaller wrists, though he had never thought that something like this could happen. Well, luckily, the gem can pop right out of the bracelet if he wants it to. Perhaps he could wrap some wire around it and have it hang on a necklace.
“I’m sorry that it doesn’t fit anymore.” Caitlyn offered with a sad smile looking from him to the bracelet.
“It’s okay. I can figure something out,” Jayce shrugged it off as he sat the bracelet right next to him before looking at his sleeves that still engulfed his hands, looking at Caitlyn as he held them up with a small grin. “Though I wish our clothes shrunk with us.”
Caitlyn just smiled at that before reaching up, ruffling Jayce’s hair as she spoke, causing the boy’s grin to grow. “Don’t worry, Vi should be back any minute with Mom and should have clothes that will fit you and Viktor.”
“Thank you,” Jayce said, watching as Caitlyn pulled her hand away before standing up to her full height.
“Of course,” She smiled before looking over to Viktor, who gave her a small smile. “Once Ekko gets back with Heimerdinger, they will help find a way to get you two back to normal, I’m sure of it.”
“Thank you, Ms. Kiramman.” Viktor grinned, watching as Caitlyn huffed, knowing she didn’t like it when he called her by her surname.
“I would smack you for that, but it would be wrong to hit a kid, and the way you said it was adorable,” She said, grinning at the shocked look on Viktor’s face. She then looked toward the door when she heard it open.
Vi had finally made it back with Caitlyn’s mother, Cassandra, following suit, with multiple sets of clothing in her arms. Vi scanned the room until her eyes landed on Caitlyn, causing her to smile, giving her a little wave, and receiving a wave from her in return. Once they fully entered the room, they headed straight toward them, prompting Caitlyn to look at the two boys, who had a nervous look in their eyes, causing her to hold up her hand to them, getting their attention.
“It’ll be okay,” Caitlyn reassured, receiving a nod from the two before turning back toward her girlfriend and her mother as they walked up.
“Caitlyn, Vi told me what happened,” Cassandra began, as she stopped in front of her daughter. “She told me that somehow both young Talis and Viktor are-.”
She fell silent when her eyes flickered past her daughter toward the cot where the two boys sat, her eyes going wide while looking between Jayce and Viktor as her mouth hung open in shock.
“I know it’s shocking,” Caitlyn began, getting her mother’s attention. “But it’s true. This is Jayce and Viktor now.”
Jayce watched as Cassandra quickly composed herself, closing her mouth and shaking the shock away before looking between him and Viktor with a warm smile. He then watched as Caitlyn moved out of the way as her mother walked toward them, causing Jayce to cower slightly. Jayce grew up knowing Caitlyn’s mother since his father and mother were friends with her family, so he was always around her. She was always a stern woman, so he was always afraid of angering her, and right now, he felt like that little boy again who was slightly intimidated by her looming presence. Even as an adult, she was still a very scary woman. He then looked over to Viktor, who looked just as nervous, his eyes darting between her and him, scooting toward him slightly, which made him do the same, clutching the other's hand as he looked back at Cassandra.
Cassandra could only smile at the two before kneeling in front of them, watching as they lowered their heads slightly, looking like two boys about to be scolded for doing something they weren’t supposed to. She looked at the two before her eyes landed on Jayce. “It’s alright, I’m not gonna bite. I just came here to give you the proper clothes to wear. I know those big clothes aren’t comfortable.”
She then held out the clothes in her hands, watching as they looked at the clothes for a second before looking back up at her. “I was able to find these. I didn’t know what size you wear now, so if these don’t fit, I purchased others that are bigger just in case.”
Jayce and Viktor looked at her for a second before looking past her to Caitlyn, who gave them a reassuring smile and nod. They then looked at each other before looking at Cassandra once more, reaching out and taking the clothes from her.
“Thank you,” Jayce whispered, receiving a smile from the older woman.
“We’ll happily pay you back for the trouble.” Viktor tried, clutching the clothes close to him.
“Oh, hush. It’s no trouble,” Cassandra chuckled, waving her hand as she spoke. “You don’t owe me anything, sweetheart. Besides, I have bought clothes for this little one before with his mother,” She then patted Jayce on the head, causing him to duck his head, his face turning red out of bashfulness.
“Wait you knew Jayce at this age?” Jinx asked in surprise while motioning over to Jayce, watching as Cassandra turned to her, giving her a nod.
“Of course, the Talis family and the Kiramman family have always been close,” Cassandra went on to explain, looking over to Jayce as she spoke. “I’ve known Jayce way before the age he is now. I knew him before he barely began to walk.”
“He’s in some of our family portraits along with his family way before I was born,” Caitlyn added, crossing her arms with a grin. “There’s even a portrait of him wearing an airship captain outfit from when he was about 5 hanging up in one of our halls.”
“Caitlyn!” Jayce snapped as he glared at her, his face beginning to grow hot with embarrassment.
“Oh, I have got to see that!” Jinx grinned, hopping off of the table and walking up to Caitlyn, resting both hands on her shoulders as she lightly shook her, receiving an eye roll from her sister. “You have to let me see it!”
Viktor only listened to the exchange in silence, a small smile forming on his face as he looked over to Jayce, whose face had only gotten redder before he suddenly pulled the cot sheet over himself, hiding under the covers.
“This is a nightmare.” Viktor heard Jayce say, it being muffled from being under the blanket, causing him to chuckle, reaching toward him and resting a comforting hand on the other's shoulder, feeling as he leaned into it, thinking that Jayce needed the support from him. He was about to speak when the door suddenly opened again, causing him to turn his head toward the opening sliding door.
The sliding door fully opened, revealing that it was Ekko who had finally found Heimerdinger, the elder Yordle walking in first, walking hastily inside with Ekko following close behind, careful not to step on him when his pace slowed slightly.
“I found him!” Ekko exclaimed as they walked up. “He was going over things with the council since council member Medarda had other things to attend to earlier.”
Viktor looked from Ekko to Jayce who had slowly begun to peer from under the blanket, only the top of his head and eyes being visible as he watched Ekko and Heimerdinger approach, causing Viktor to do the same turning back to the two heading toward them, before watching Caitlyn, Vi, and Jinx standing in front of them, slightly hiding them from the professor, probably not wanting to shock him at first, though Viktor didn’t think that this kind of thing would faze the yordle. He had been alive long enough to see some truly bizarre things.
“Ekko said that an experiment had gone wrong and somehow had turned both Jayce and Viktor into children?” Heimerdinger asked, looking between everyone with slight skepticism.
“It’s true, Mr. Heimerdinger,” Caitlyn began, looking between Jinx and Vi before looking back at the professor. “We were here to witness it first hand.”
“Right, well let’s see what the damage is!” Heimerdinger then motioned for everyone to clear his path. He watched as they slowly broke apart, backing away as he walked up. Once he was in front of the cot, he paused, his eyes going wide as he looked at the two former scientists, now children, sitting on top of the cot. “By golly, this is most fascinating!”
Jayce watched as Heimerdinger came closer, pulling his goggles down and adding a few more lenses, staring at both him and Viktor intently. He couldn’t help but shuffle back slightly as he suddenly hopped on the cot right next to him causing him to quickly pick up his bracelet before the yordle accidentally stepped on it, clutching it to his chest as he backed into Viktor slightly, who was giving Heimerdinger a confused look. He was about to speak when the yordle grabbed both sides of his face, moving his head up and down, then side to side, causing him to stare off with a bored expression, finally understanding why people get annoyed with how touchy he was with everyone.
“Whatever you two had done had somehow reversed your biology before you even reached your adolescence,” Heimerdinger began, letting go of Jayce’s face before hopping off the cot and walking around the other side then hopping onto the cot once more, this time next to Viktor who backed into Jayce which placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, causing the other to lean into it while he eyed the yordle closely, pausing when he gently grabbed a tuft of Viktor’s hair, looking it over intently. “You two looked to be between the ages 8 and 9.”
Viktor looked from Heimerdinger to Jayce, whose eyes were wide with shock. The Yordle had a point; like Viktor had thought earlier, Jayce did look to be around 8 years old, and he, himself, sure looked to be 9 since he was a year older. He then slowly turned back to Heimerdinger, which still had a hold of his hair. “So we are around- OW!” Viktor felt a tug on his head when the yordle suddenly plucked a piece of hair from Viktor’s head, causing him to reach up and rub the sore spot.
“Hey!” Jayce snapped, placing a protective arm around Viktor’s shoulders while he glared at Heimerdinger, who had hopped down, looking the piece of hair over while using the magnifying lenses on his goggles to get a closer look. “Why did you do that!?”
“Just for research purposes, my boy,” Heimerdinger explained before he pulled his goggles from his eyes, reaching into his pocket to pull out a handkerchief, unfolding it before placing the hair into the cloth, gently folding it, and placing it into his pocket once more. He then turned back to Jayce as he spoke. “My apologies for the intrusion, but I need all the variables I can get to ensure I can help you and Viktor return back to normal.”
Jayce's anger disappeared after hearing his explanation, causing him to calm down a bit. Though the yordle’s methods were sometimes invasive, he knew that he was just trying to help.
“Now!” Heimerdinger began clapping his hands together, which got Jayce’s attention. “How about you two change and show me how this reversing of age occurred?”
…
Once the boys were able to change into clothes that actually fit them, they both brought Heimerdinger to the broken machine that caused this and explained everything. Jayce told him how Sky had found a book with old runes that had long been forgotten with time, how he found a found a rune in particular that caught his eye that could revert objects if casted, how he and Viktor were able to create a machine to accomplish such a task but it went wrong and exploded right next them, reverting them to the age they were now.
Jayce watched as the yordle was now examining the rune in question, looking the metal piece from the broken machine over, his magnifying goggles on once more to get a closer look, humming to himself as he turned it in his hand. He then looked over to Viktor, who was right next to him, only he wasn’t standing like he was. Viktor was on the rolling stool that he usually sat in since he no longer had his leg brace that fit him and a cane that was to his height, so he was on his stool to not further strain his leg until he got a proper cane and leg brace. Viktor was just staring at the ground, both hands clamped to the stool. Looking as if he were deep in thought, his brow furrowed as a small frown lay upon his lips. This caused Jayce to frown slightly, not sure what was going on inside his partner's head, so he laid a hand on his shoulder, causing him to snap out of his thoughts, looking up at him in surprise. He gave him a small smile, gently squeezing his shoulder to silently tell him he was right there. Viktor gave him a small smile in return, reaching up to gently pat the hand that rested on his shoulder before Heimerdinger’s humming got their attention.
“Quite fascinating,” Heimerdinger acknowledged before pulling his goggles up and looking back at the rune. “A rune lost in time, only to be found within the pages of a book.”
“Have you ever seen a rune like this, professor?” Caitlyn questioned as she walked up, standing next to Jayce, who looked up at her.
“Hmm, I have seen a rune such as this in my time, I admit. I’ve seen a rune-like this be used for good things,” Heimerdinger confessed before a frown formed on his face, causing his mustache to droop slightly. “As well as bad. Sure, this rune can be useful from a scientific standpoint, but if it were to get into the wrong hands.”
Heimerdinger shook his head before setting the rune down, turning toward Jayce and Viktor, a look of disappointment in his eyes. “This was a very dangerous experiment, my boys. If any more power built up in that machine, you two could have been reverted out of existence. I thought I taught you two to be more careful.”
Jayce and Viktor couldn’t help but cower slightly at Heimerdinger’s scrutiny. Viktor clutched the sides of the stool cushion tighter while Jayce ducked his head, both unable to look the yordle in the eye. They both had been scolded by him in the past, but for some reason, this seemed to hurt a lot more.
“What in Runeterra happened to cause such an explosion?” Heimerdinger questioned, motioning over to the machine that was still in tatters on the table.
Jinx was nervously chewing on her knuckles at listening to the disappointed yordle looking between him and the two boys, knowing she was in for it when Jayce was about to explain what happened, her heart-stopping when Jayce looked at her.
“It… I-It was my fault professor.” Jayce whispered as his eyes fell to the ground, causing Jinx to freeze while Viktor turned to him in shock.
“Jayce?” Viktor whispered, but he paused when Jayce gently motioned for him to let him handle it, which meant taking the fall.
“I accidentally dropped the dial that gets the machine up and running,” Jayce explained reaching for his wrist and rubbing circles on the inside of his wrist where the gem on his bracelet used to lay, a thing he did when he was nervous. “It broke, so we had no way of turning the machine off, causing it to explode.”
“Hmm, well, I am very disappointed in you, young Talis,” Heimerdinger sighed, causing Jayce to somehow shrink in on himself further. “I taught you better than that.”
Jinx frowned upon hearing Jayce explain what happened. Sure, he technically didn’t lie. That was exactly what happened, but he was omitting the part where she was the cause of him dropping the dial that broke it in the first place. Her guilt only grew at the sight of Jayce looking down at his shoes with a frown on his chubby face, noticing that his eyes were becoming glassy against his will. When she looked at the small pout forming on Jayce's face, all she could see was Isha when she got in trouble, trying to take the fall for Jinx when she messed up and received a scolding for either Vander or Silco. And just like with Isha, she wasn’t going to let that happen to Jayce.
“It wasn’t Jayce’s fault, professor,” Jinx began, causing everyone to turn to her. She looked to Jayce, who looked up at her with wide eyes, a look of surprise in his features as she gave him a small smile before looking to Heimerdinger, who gave her a look of question. “It was my fault. I pranked Jayce by sneaking up behind him to scare him, which made him drop the dial in the first place. None of this would have happened if I hadn’t scared him.”
Jayce’s features softened as he looked at Jinx sticking up for him. Sure, she liked to get on his nerves by pulling pranks, not listening to him, and thinking he was boring for making her follow the rules, but he knew that deep down, she cared for him. He couldn’t but feel proud of her for admitting her mistake and taking accountability for it.
“Well, if that’s true, then I apologize, my dear boy,” Heimerdinger began as he looked at Jayce. “Though you should have had more safety precautions, I now know that you couldn’t have predicted such a predicament.”
He then turned to Jinx, who lowered her head, ready for his scolding. “As for you, you know better than to pull pranks in a place of experimentation. Situations like this or much worse can occur.”
“You’re right, and I’m truly sorry,” Jinx whispered, fiddling with a bracelet that was on her wrist that had spinning gears on it, a gift from both Jayce and Viktor that was given to her on her birthday. “I should have been more mindful and listened to Jayce and Viktor.”
“Yes you should have,” Heimerdinger agreed, shaking his head as he sighed. “As punishment, you’ll be suspended for let’s say, four weeks.”
Jinx's eyes grew wide with fear as the others stared at the yordle in shock. Both Jayce and Viktor looked at each other in worry before looking at the professor once more.
“W-Wait, professor, that’s a little long, don’t you think?” Jayce began, reaching out for him slightly to get his attention.
“I am being generous right now,” Heimerdinger argued as he turned back to Jayce and Viktor, motioning to them. “Look at you two. You’re lucky to still have your cognitive functions. If that machine had reverted you past this stage, you could have been in your infancy or worse. This would be grounds for expulsion if that were the case.”
“But it isn’t the case,” Jayce began. “We’re still here, and our cognitive functions are still intact, so we don’t hold this against her. We know that she didn’t mean for this to happen.”
“Plus, if you suspend her for that long, she wouldn’t have time to work on her project for this year’s distinguished innovators competition,” Viktor added, watching as Jayce motioned to him, nodding his head in agreement.
“Hmm, that is true,” Heimerdinger hummed, placing a finger under his chin as he thought it over. “That would be a lot of catching up to do if possible.”
“Just give her a less harsh punishment if you have to,” Viktor began, getting the yordle’s attention. “She knows her error and owns to her mistake, and we hold no ill will for it.”
“We don’t want her education to struggle for one mistake. I know first hand if you could recall,” Jayce began, watching as Heimerdinger reflected on the time when his room/lab was desecrated by one of the gemstones that had fallen and caused the lab to explode. “It’s… not a fun feeling.”
Heimerdinger considered Jayce and Viktor’s words carefully, tapping his chin while the others waited with bated breath on what his decision was. “Hmm, it’s true. I wouldn’t want a brilliant young mind to be snuffed out over one mistake… Fine, I will lessen the punishment,” He said as he held up one finger before pointing to Jinx. “Instead of four weeks, you’ll only get one week of suspension. But! You’ll have to stay behind after lessons to clean the lab for about 6 months, understood.”
“Yes, professor, I understand,” Jinx said as she lowered her head. “Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me, young lady,” Heimerdinger chuckled before motioning to the young boys. “You’re lucky to have such generous mentors taking you under their wings.”
“I know… I am very lucky.” She whispered as she looked over to Jayce and Viktor, giving them a smile and a nod with gratitude on their features. She then felt someone reach for her hand, causing her to turn to see Ekko giving her a smile and squeezing her hand.
“You did good.” He whispered, slightly nudging her with his shoulder watching as she gave him a smile, squeezing his hand back in response.
“Now, that that is settled!” Heimerdinger began clapping his hands to get everyone’s attention. “We must proceed with our next course of action! Which is to figure out more about what has happened to you two and if there is a way to reverse this.”
“Wouldn’t it be the opposite of reverse?” Jinx questioned, causing everyone to turn to her in question. “Since reversing is what got us into this mess in the first place?”
“Oh you know what I mean,” Heimerdinger waved her off before motioning to Jayce and Viktor. “I mean getting these two back to their original state.”
“What if… there wasn’t a way?” Vi asked, causing Caitlyn to nudge her harshly, glaring at her. “What, I’m just saying!”
“It’s not an unreasonable question,” Heimerdinger said as he thought it over. “We still don’t know the complexities of this specific rune. So we don’t know the first thing on how to reverse this.”
“So we’re stuck like this?” Jayce whispered fearfully, feeling as Viktor reached up, resting a comforting hand on his arm, but even he looked frightened at the thought of them having to go through childhood all over again.
“Now, let's not get ahead of ourselves,” Heimerdinger interrupted their downward spiral. “We still need to run some tests. Perhaps we can find a flaw in your discovery that could help us. You both said you tested the machine before the disaster, and it was a success, yes?”
“Yeah,” Jayce answered before turning around and searching their desk before finding the wrench they tested it on, grabbing it before holding it out to Heimerdinger. “We tested it on this. This wrench was chipped and covered in rust before we used the machine. Now it’s brand new.”
“Remarkable,” Heimerdinger whispered as he took the wrench from Jayce, looking it over. “I’ll run some tests on this and the hair from Young Viktor’s head to see if I can find a way to fix this.”
“While that’s being figured out, there is still the matter of both Jayce and Viktor’s responsibilities for Hextech,” Cassandra began, getting their attention. “What on earth are we going to tell the council?”
“The council,” Jayce whispered as his eyes grew wide, and his hand ran through his hair as he stared ahead. “Mel… Crap there’s a gala coming up soon. What the heck are we going to tell her?” He questioned as he looked over to Viktor.
Viktor was about to share his worries about it as well when the lab door suddenly opened again, causing him to pause, his eyes going wide at who walked in.
As if on cue, Mel suddenly walked through the doors, her heels tapping on the concrete flooring as she looked down at a bunch of notes, failing to see everyone and the shocked look on their faces.
“Jayce, Viktor, are you two busy?” She questioned, still not looking up from the papers as she walked up. “I need a moment to discuss the next-.”
She stopped in her tracks when she looked up, finally noticing everyone staring at her. Mel looked between everyone until her eyes landed on both Jayce and Viktor. A look of confusion formed on her face the longer she looked at the two boys, not yet realizing who they were.
“Uh… Hey Mel.” Jayce said nervously, waving at 6 her to look at him.
A look of shock formed on her face as she dropped the papers, finally recognizing who the boy was. She stepped closer, watching as Jayce nervously grabbed at his wrist again, which further confirmed that it was indeed Jayce. “Jayce?” She questioned before looking over to the boy next to him, noting that he wasn’t standing and looked like Jayce’s partner. “Viktor?” She questioned, watching as he gave her a small nod. Confusion only grew as she looked between the two motioning to them both. “What happened to you two?”
“It’s… a long story, Ms. Medarda,” Viktor whispered with a sigh, feeling like they were going to have to explain the situation a lot today moving forward if they ran into anyone else.
“Well I suddenly have time,” Mel began, unable to hide the fascination on her face. “The matters I came to discuss with you two will have to wait. Tell me everything.”
“While you all discuss this, I need to run some tests,” Heimerdinger then pointed to Ekko. “Ekko my boy, I need some assistance!” He then looked at Jayce and Viktor. “You two sit tight, I’ll figure this out for you in no time.”
Jayce watched as both Heimerdinger and Ekko went to the other side of the room to work before turning back to Mel, who gave him a reassuring smile. “Why don’t we sit down while Viktor and I, uh, explain.”
“That would be nice.” Mel agreed, watching as Jayce helped Viktor up off the stool, letting him use him as a human crutch before following them both to the cot.
“I’ll make tea.” Cassandra offered, walking over to the kitchen area and looking for the teapot and tea bags.
Vi, Caitlyn, and Jinx watched as each group went in separate directions before looking at each other. They stood there in silence for a moment, not sure what to say.
“I prefer coffee.” Jinx shrugged, causing Caitlyn to sigh and Vi to roll her eyes with a smile.
“Coffee is the last thing you need.” Vi grinned before they all decided to follow Jayce, Viktor, and Mel to the cot.

Stede heard Ed shout in the living room, along with the sound of wooden furniture crashing to the floor, with the sound of bare feet thumbing against the carpet, the wood floor, and then the carpet once more.
Stede was in their kitchen preparing their meal for dinner, using a meat cleaver to chop off the heads of fish that Ed and procured after a long morning of fishing. He planned to make a stew with the meat, along with sorted vegetables that he had just harvested from their ever-growing garden and using seasonings that Roach had brought them during the crew's last visit. He would have continued to chop the last of the fishes' heads when the sound of Ed yelling along with furniture crashing caused him to pause mid-chop, looking to the doorway that led to the living room.
"Ed?!" He called out in worry, never hearing Ed sounding so scared. He clutched the cleaver tightly, the fish forgotten as he rushed out of the kitchen, ready to fight whatever had his lover screaming like that. The former gentleman pirate ran into the living room, the cleaver over his head as he scanned the room seeing one of their side tables on the floor as he searched for Ed or the danger.
"I'm here! I'm here! Where's the danger?!" He asked with a shout, looking around for the attacker that frightened Ed.
He then saw movement behind their furniture in the middle of the room, causing him to clutch the cleaver tighter but he let out a sigh in relief when he noticed that it was just Ed, peering his head over the ruby-red velvet antique couch that he found in the market by chance. Ed had a look of fear in his big round eyes that Stede had never seen before, looking like he had seen a ghost. Stede put on a brave face, wondering what the hell could scare the dread pirate Blackbeard this bad. He went to ask where the danger was once more but he paused when Ed lifted himself slightly over the couch.
"There!" Ed wheezed, pointing toward the ground causing Stede to look where he was pointing.
Stede expected it to be a robber of some sort, the English navy somehow finding them and recognizing Ed as a pirate, or even Izzy Hands somehow back from the dead. What he didn't expect was to see a teeny tiny black spider standing on the rug, looking up right at them.
The blonde man blinked a couple of times, slowly lowering his cleaver as he looked at the eight-legged creature. It was no bigger than a pence and could probably fit on his thumb. He then looked back at Ed, whose wide eyes were on him now.
"... The spider?" He questioned, slowly pointing to the arachnid with his free hand.
"Yes, the fucking spider!" Ed snapped clutching the edge of the couch like a lifeline, still hiding behind it as he glared at Stede. "What else would I be pointing to!?"
Stede smiled as he let out a relieved sigh, setting the cleaver down on a nearby table.
"Oh Ed," He whispered lovingly as he began to slowly walk toward the spider that slowly turned toward him and tensed at his movement.
Ed's eyes grew even wider as he watched Stede crouch down near the foul creature, causing him to lower further behind the couch. He watched as the other didn't hesitate to place one hand on the ground near the spider while using the other to actually touch and push the disgusting thing into the palm of his open hand. "You're a fucking lunatic," Ed whispered, glaring at Stede's hand.
Stede smiled down at the spider, which was surprisingly calm in his hand as he got up from the ground. He then looked back up at Ed who looked from his hand to Stede's eyes. "I didn't know you were afraid of spiders Ed."
"Oh yeah," Ed snarked, rolling his eyes as he made a disapproving face. "Go ahead, laugh it up!"
"No one's laughing, Dear," Stede assured Ed with a grin, before looking down at the spider once more. He brought it closer to his face to get a better look, thinking that it was sort of cute in a way. "This one looks harmless enough, though."
"None of them are harmless!"
"Darling," Stede lightly scolded as he looked back up at Ed who slowly lifted himself from behind the couch but would not move an inch toward him. "Treat spiders the way you want to be treated."
"Killed without hesitation?" Ed asked darkly, pulling out a rather large knife from his holster.
"What?" Stede squinted his eyes at Ed in confusion shaking his head as he spoke. "No! Why is that your first assumption?!"
"Because that's what they want!" Ed snapped, pointing at the spider with his knife. "Look at it's beety fucking eyes. It wants my soul, I'm sure of it."
"I think it wants flies mostly," Stede sighed as he looked back at the spider. "You know, they are more scared of you than you are of it? Plus, they are good to keep around to keep other insects away."
"Good! Then it can do that outside!" Ed snapped as he placed his knife back in his holster waving toward the door. "If you're not going to kill it then take it out there where it belongs!"
"Alright, I will, I will," Stede smiled beginning to walk toward the door, motioning to the couch. "You can relax now, Dear. I'll take it to the fence near the garden."
Stede smiled as Ed just grumbled at that, walking around the couch, quickly picking up the fallen table, and placing it back where it belonged. After he walked up and flopped onto the red furniture, still eyeing the spider in his hand before Stede walked out of their home.
The former pirate walked off of the front porch of their future Inn, stepping off the steps as he walked the fence line. He followed the fence until he was near their garden, walking up to one of the wooden posts.
"Alright, little fella," Stede sighed as he looked down at the spider that was beginning to crawl up his arm at his movement causing him to place his other hand on his arm until it crawled on his palm. "So sorry about this. We aren't a rent-free Inn I'm afraid," He joked before placing the spider on the post.
Once the spider was on the post he placed his hands on his knees, looking down at the Spider with a smile and failing to notice Ed at the window nearest to him, opening the curtains to watch him. "So sorry about Ed. You just spooked him is all. He may even have spooked you from all his yelling. But that's alright, it's not yours or his fault. Everyone has a fear of something. Lord knows I'm afraid of a few things that seem harmless."
He chuckled as the spider slowly turned and lifted his tiny head and looked at him with its four bigger eyes staring into his almost like he was listening to him speak.
Ed watched Stede smiling down at the arachnid, able to see no fear in the blonde man's eyes causing him to frown. He cast his eyes from Stede to the wooden floorboards before closing the curtain and walking back toward the couch.
Meanwhile, Stede then slowly stood up, wiping his hands with a sigh. "Well, I should get back to it. You take care, little fella."
With that, Stede turned around and began to walk back toward the house, leaving the spider safe on the pole near their garden. He thought it was safer for the little guy to live near. Plus, he could keep insects away that are a nuisance in their vegetables.
Stede quickly walked up the steps of their Inn, walking onto the porch as he reached for the front door. He slowly opened the door as he peered inside, seeing Ed sitting on the couch. Stede couldn't help but smile as he looked at his boyfriend as he spoke. "You're safe now, Ed. The spider's making its new home elsewhere."
Ed remained quiet for a moment, his arms crossed over his abdomen as he avoided Stede's gaze, nodding his head as he looked away. "... Good... Thanks."
Stede nods his head awkwardly, slowly walking in and closing the door behind him. He waited for Ed to look at him but it was fruitless as he continued to avoid his gaze. He then tried to throw on a smile, chuckling as he pointed toward the door with his thumb. "Didn't think our first eviction would be a spider." Stede joked, chuckling a bit at his joke that sounded horrible out loud, pausing when Ed finally began to look at him.
"Hmm, funny." Ed tried with a thin smile, but it didn't meet his eyes as he glanced back at the ground, the not-so-genuine smile fading slightly.
Stede frowned at this, slowly walking further into the living room as he kept his eyes on Ed. He then tilted his head slightly trying to read his lover's features. "Are you alright, Ed?"
"... 'm fine," Ed mumbled bringing his feet onto the couch and wrapping his arms around his legs.
"You sure?" Stede tried lightly, stepping onto the rug as he began to wring his hands together. "You don't seem like yourself right-,"
"I said I'm fine, Stede!" Ed sort of snipped looking up at the other, but felt guilty at his tone when he saw the crushed look on Stede's face. So he coughed lightly as he looked at the ground again. "I mean I'll be fine. Still- I don't know- Shaken up I guess."
"Alright," Stede frowned as he slowly looked from Ed to the ground, a lump beginning to form in his throat. Feeling like Ed needed space, he then pointed to the kitchen. "I better finish cooking dinner before it rots. Don't want your hard work fishing to go to waste."
He then watched as Ed looked from Stede to the kitchen, beginning to lift himself off of the couch meaning that he was probably going to offer his help but Stede held up his hands. "No, it's alright. I got it handled," He began watching as Ed paused. "You just sit and relax. I'll finish up dinner."
Ed gave Stede a tired smile, but it fell as he slowly lowered himself onto the couch once more, avoiding his gaze once again. "Thanks, Stede."
"Of course. I won't be too long." Stede said with a smile. But as soon as he turned and walked toward the kitchen he began to frown, grabbing the cleaver as he entered their kitchen.
He walked around the counter as he placed the cleaver down and rested his hands on said counter beginning to stare off. Stede couldn't help but feel guilty for Ed's sour mood, feeling like he was responsible for making Ed feel this way. Ed must have thought he was making fun of him for having a fear of something so small. But Stede wasn't making fun of him, not intentionally anyway. He would never actively try to make Ed feel bad for something like that. Stede was the last person to judge someone with an irrational fear. He was called Baby Bonnet after all, being afraid of almost everything as a child. Even now at his grown age, he had irrational fears of his own, so he understood Ed.
Stede let out a sigh as he reached for a fish with its head still on it and grabbed the cleaver once more, looking down at the fish. The bloody cleaver in his hand as he looked down at the lifeless animal on the table was all too familiar now. Memories of his father flashed through his mind, remembering his father looming over a terrifying goose as he clutched a cleaver that looked so much like his own, raising it over his head before dropping it over the goose's neck causing blood to splatter all over his father and him. He squinted his eyes at the memory, letting out a sigh as he looked from the table to the doorway to the living room where Ed resided.
"I understand all too well," Stede whispered, before looking back at the table at the fish, hesitated before bringing to cleaver down with a flinch, swearing that he could hear the sound of a dying goose cry out. He needed to finish dinner and maybe talk to Ed about what was troubling him while they ate. Maybe even apologize for making him feel embarrassed.
After a while, the fish stew was finally finished and he placed two bowls down on a platter. He then grabbed a ladle and dipped it in the stew, scooping out an even amount of fish meat, and vegetables and dumped them in each bowl. After he placed the ladle down and grabbed the fresh bread he baked earlier and placed it on said platter along with a jar of marmalade for dessert. Once he had everything sorted, he grabbed the platter by the handles and began to carry it, balancing it as he walked out of the kitchen and into the living room.
Stede paused at the doorway, looking up to look at Ed who was still on the couch. Ed was on the far right of the couch, now covered in a blanket that laid right behind the couch for anyone to use when cold, or when Ed was down and wanted to cacoon himself from the world. And cocooned he was, wrapping the soft blanket over his head and around his frame as he slowly turned to Stede, looking at him with those big round eyes that had a look of sadness in them.
Stede tried to throw on a smile, holding up the platter as he spoke. "Dinner's done," He whispered watching as Ed looked from him to the platter a small smile forming on his face. "You want to eat in the dining room or do you want to eat in here?"
Ed looked back at Stede, bringing his hand out of the blanket before patting the couch. "Here?" He questioned in a whisper, wanting to make sure it was okay with Stede if he could stay where he was, not wanting to move at the moment.
"Here is just fine, Dear." Stede agreed as he walked further into the living room and right to the couch. He then sat the platter on a large table in front of them before sitting right next to Ed. "I hope you enjoy it. It's been a long time since I've had this so I hope I made it right."
Ed looked from Stede to the food in front of him. A small smile formed on his face as he quietly spoke. "... It smells good," He then looked back at Stede, reaching for his hand that was resting on the couch, holding it in his own and giving him a gentle squeeze. "Thanks, babe."
"It's my pleasure, love," Stede whispered squeezing his hand back but he frowned when Ed looked away, avoiding his gaze once more.
Slowly, they both reached for their bowls and utensils where they began to eat their food. They sat there for a while, silently eating their food. Stede would glance at Ed now and then but Ed still avoided his gaze, quietly bringing his fork to his mouth as he ate. The blonde began to play with his food, spinning his fork in his bowl as he glanced at the ground. It usually wasn't this quiet during dinner, Ed would start telling Stede about his day when he wasn't around, an animated look in his eyes as he told his tale of what he did that morning and afternoon. Stede wasn't used to it being so quiet during dinner... Not anymore.
So he slowly turned to Ed, a small smile on his face as he tried to break the silence. "I saw this lovely teal rug at the market yesterday," He began, watching as Ed paused from eating, looking up at him. "I'm thinking that if it's still there we could get it. It would complement the sea-themed room we are making nicely."
"...Yeah," Ed whispered throwing on another disinginuin grin as he looked at Stede before looking back down at his food. "We can pick it up tomorrow."
And then they were back into silence, causing Stede to frown. He looked from Ed to the ground biting the inside of his gum before he sighed, placing his fork into the bowl and setting his food back on the platter. He then looked back at Ed, who paused from his eating, noticing Stede placing his bowl down but still avoiding his gaze. The blonde then looked back at Ed resting a hand on the couch near his lover.
"Ed, are you sure you're alright?" He gently asked, bringing his hand closer but not touching him just yet. "You're not yourself," Stede waited for Ed to answer, but he remained silent, seeing his mouth pressed shut into a thin line which made him feel worse. So he scooted closer to Ed. "Did... Did I say something to upset you? I didn't mean to poke fun, Ed. I-."
"No it's not you, love," Ed sighed as he leaned forward, uncrossing his legs and setting them on the ground as he sat his bowl down on the table in front of him, before wrapping the blanket around him once more. "It's me I-."
Stede watched as Ed went silent with a sigh, shaking his head as he stared at the ground in front of him. The blonde scooted closer, their knees touching as he looked at the other. "What's on your mind, Dear?" He asked, wanting to talk it through with Ed, instead of bottling it up.
Ed let out another sigh as he shook his head, turning further away from Stede as he curled into the blanket. "You must think I'm ridiculous."
"Oh..." Stede lowered his head in shame. "So I did say something to upset you."
"You didn't have to," Ed finally looked at Stede, a look of embarrassment on his face as he spoke. "I know it's stupid to be afraid of something so small."
"Oh Ed," Stede shook his head, resting a hand on Ed's knee. "That's not true. It's completely normal to be afraid of spiders. A lot of people are."
"But I shouldn't be!" Ed lightly snapped as he looked at Stede who was looking at him in shock. He then shook his head as he looked away from the other, resting his arm on the armrest of the couch, holding his temple as he spoke. "I mean I'm fucking Blackbeard... I'm supposed to fear nothing. Blackbeard shouldn't be afraid of a fucking insect."
"Arachnid dear." Stede lightly corrected.
"Yeah, that shit. Whatever."
Stede kept his gaze on Ed for a long time, watching as he stared ahead with a frown on his features. This caused the blonde man to smile slightly reaching up to rest a hand on Ed's shoulder causing him to side glance at him. "I know that you're Blackbeard and are a fearless pirate," He began, watching as Ed slowly turned to him as he spoke. "But you are also Ed, who has a fear of spiders and that's completely normal. A lot of people are afraid of spiders."
Ed looked from one of Stede's eyes to the other, his features softening as he was now fully facing Stede, resting a hand on his knee. He then lowered his head, his eyes still on his lover as he spoke. "You don't think it's... Stupid that I-?"
"Not in a million years," Stede interrupted, reaching for Ed's hand, holding it tightly in his own. "I don't think any less of you. You're still the fearless pirate I admire and the Edward Teach I fell in love with," He watched as a warm smile formed on Ed's features, moving his hand to intertwine their fingers feeling as his hand closed on his. "You don't have to worry about me judging you. I understand," He then leaned forward giving Ed a gentle nudge on his shoulder. "And if another spider somehow gets in the house, you come and get me and I'll take it outside."
"Ooh, I love you," Ed whispered as he slowly leaned in and gently placed his lips on Stede's.
Stede happily returned the kiss, letting out a hum in contentment which made Ed smile his eyes closing as he held the other's hand tighter. Once they broke the kiss, Stede began to lean back on the couch, resting his head on the armrest as smiled at Ed, who crawled onto his lap and rested the side of his head on his chest, their food forgotten at the moment, as they just wanted a moment to be in each other's company.
Stede smiled down at Ed who had his eyes closed, beginning to comb his fingers through his salt and pepper hear causing his love to sigh, snuggling his head into his chest in contentment. He then slowly looked at the ceiling, looking at all of the areas where there were holes until they patched them up together.
"You know, I have an irrational fear of geese," Stede began, feeling Ed lift his head, slowly opening his eyes as he looked at him. "My father had a bunch of them and every once in a while, he would force me to grab one for him to cook. They scared the hell out of me. Even now if I were to encounter a goose I might turn tale and run."
"Hmm wouldn't blame you," Ed grumbled, resting his head on Stede once more, resting his hand on his chest as he spoke. "They are all diabolical bastards."
Stede let out a heartfelt laugh, looking down at Ed with a loving smile. He hadn't told anyone that out of fear of being made fun of. Remembering a time when the badminton twins found out this and wouldn't let it go for months. Actually pulling a prank where he got chased by dozens of geese while they laughed. But not Ed... Never Ed who understood him. "I agree," Stede whispered as he leaned back, staring at the ceiling. "They are evil incarnate."
Ed slowly opened his eyes, feeling as Stede continued to card his hand through his long hair as he turned his head to look at his lover as he spoke. "Thank you," He began, watching as Stede lifted his head to look at him in question. "For taking the spider out and... and understanding."
Stede only smiled taking his left hand into his right as he looked down at Ed. "Of course, love. I'll do anything to protect you,"
"Hmm... My hero." Ed grinned squeezing his hand once more.
Stede's eyes then trailed to Ed's hand, blinking when he finally noticed the tattoo of a spider. He arched an eyebrow with a grin, lifting his hand to get a better look. "You got a spider tattoo even though you're afraid of spiders?"
"He-heh yeah," Ed chuckled, looking from Stede to the tattoo. "I thought if I got a tattoo I'd get over my fear of spiders but it didn't work, so I wear the leather gloves... But I can tolerate the tattoo now."
"I love that each of your tattoos has a story. Or something about you." Stede whispered, bringing his hand up to his mouth, and lightly kissing the spider tattoo. "And I love that about you."
"And I love how brave and understanding you are babe," Ed whispered back.
Stede and Ed shared loving gazes and warm smiles, both leaning in for another tender kiss before pulling away. The blonde leaned back as the other rested his head on his chest once more, taking a moment to rest before they ate once more. They both felt much better now Ed felt much safer with Stede around to shoo away his fears and felt comfortable with Stede knowing a little more about what he feared, no matter how irrational it was.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” // “Are you bleeding?” // "Please tell me you have a brilliant plan."
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
Albus smirked and leaned his body closer. He could feel the heat illuminating from the other boy and the soft scent of cologne was almost enough to make him sneeze. He then scooted closer and continued to wear his devilishly grin.
“I think I know of a way I could cheer you up.”
“Are you bleeding?”
Albus rubbed his nose with the back of his hand and wasn’t surprised that when he pulled back, crimson blood had stained his skin. He grimaced slightly, before reaching over with his other hand and pulling down his sleeve for his right arm. He then bundled up the clothing in his fist and brought his right hand up and clotted it over his nose in hopes of catching the dripping blood. It was just the that the door to the dormitory opened up. He instantly turned his back to the newcomer without even caring to see who had arrived. He cursed under his breath and his head began to throb, as his white shirt began to stain more.
Once he heard the familiar voice, Albus sighed and shook his head to no avail. He didn’t bother to comment back, but instead walked over to his bed post and leaned his head against the railing for just a moment before sitting down slowly on the edge of his bed. Albus could practically feel Leo’s eyes on him, but as his head spun and the blood continued to pour from his nostrils. Upon realizing that the other boy was probably waiting for a response, Albus just decided to let out a dramatic groan and plop back onto his mattress.
“Come save me-- James broke my nose again.”
"Please tell me you have a brilliant plan."
Albus scoffed loudly and shook his head in disbelief. He leaned his body against the cold bricks and turned his head to face Leo once more. He stared for a long moment before leaning in close to whisper in his boyfreinds ears.
“Who do you take me for? Of fucking course I’ve got a plan. I’m Albus Potter for Merlin’s sake.”
