I was just thinking about this the other day— I got really, REALLY serious about art when I was 15. I was so depressed and lonely as a teenager. Art helped me focus on something other than my misery. There are a lot of reasons why I am an artist, but that is one of the big ones. Around that time I started collecting books and taking classes. It became an obsession. It became therapy for me. It's #MarchMeetTheMaker ❓ Day 3: How You Started? ....................................... ➰ My grandmother definitely planted the seed with my love for yarn, and knitting and crochet which is why it's so near & dear to my heart! I wish I had pictures from when I first learned how to knit, but she taught me when I was about 10 years old. 📷 Photo 1: One of my first knitting projects, and the vintage bag my Grandma Jean gave me to keep it all in. (I'm so happy I still have it!). • It was later in 2009 that I began to pick up the knitting bug again, and then in 2010 on a trip to California to visit my family, my Mom & Grandma taught me to crochet. 📷 Photo 2: My Grandma Jean & I crocheting. 🚼In 2013 when I found out I was pregnant with our daughter, I really started to knit & crochet more often (thanks, nesting!). Day 2 of #marchmeetthemaker How you started. 😊 We (me and my partner Adam) started out by sewing as a hobby. We made easy sewing projects first than one day I wanted to make a bag for myself and fell in love with the making process. The first bags we listed to our Etsy shop was a leaf shaped bike messenger bag (picture) and hip bag. Whoops! I seem to have had a little break from insta for a few days! I’ve been drawing, napping, working, and finishing off an old sketchbook. 👆this sketchbook was one of the first I started 3 years ago & the beginning of Outlaws and Skeletons. I used this 30 year old watercolour palette, a tiny paintbrush & just filled pages. #Day3 #MarchMeetTheMaker2018 #HowYouStarted My parents signed and dated my first drawing, "A Sleeping Snail", when I was 18 months old. I went through a brief Picasso period, yet horses have been a favorite subject to draw throughout my life. By age 7, I was mass producing and selling yarn and pipecleaner cats at my bowling league between games. I had a miniature traveling store front, and I charged 75 cents a piece. I learned how easily you can saturate your market.
