i'm halfway through messiah so here's some portraits
paul -> he's wearing hanfu in the atreides colors, green and red. i wanted to have him wear a high ponytail or longer hair, but i was afraid that would make him difficult to recognize, so i gave him those dumb bangs timcham wears. his freckles are from the time he spends in arrakhs in the sun as a fugitive.
alia -> also in hanfu, but her clothing is more militarized for practicality, as she is a warrior. she commonly wears her hair up as a noblewoman, but i wanted her to have it down because she's very much this uncontrollable wild child teenage girl. i looked into a lot of pre-raphaelite paintings to get inspiration for her because i can just totally see her as one of those beautiful women with impossibly long and wild red hair
jessica -> her clothing is a mix of hanfu with her bene gesserit garb, which i based off eastern european orthodox habits. she used to be very mindful of her appearance and skin as a bene gesserit and a concubine, but her time in arrakhs aged her due to the stress, and, like alia, her face became full of freckles from the sun, which she wears sort of like a battle scar.
chani -> the fremen aren't described as wearing any type of cultural clothing that isn't the stillsuits, so i wanted to give her something more casual to wear as a court lady. her outfit is inspired by cultural/traditional tajikistan wear, and she wears fremen colors - that i made up - which are orange/red (melange) and blue (their eyes). i inspired her appearance on sonia braga.
stilgar -> literally just javier bardem lol, but again i wanted to have him have moles/freckles on his face due to the sun, and long hair because i'm allergic to not drawing men with long hair. the stillsuit is a mix of '84 and 2021 dunes, with the colors of 2021 with the design of '84 (which is a lot easier to draw).
duncan idaho/hayt -> i wanted him to be more of a pretty boy rather than bulked up like in 2021 movie, so i based him on andre grandier from rose of versailles. his outfit is a more generic 'futuristic' outfit, but still with the atreides colors.
the baron -> unironically my favorite from the first book. i LOVED this design by mark zug, so that was my inspo for his overall appearance. his outfit is a blend of 16th-17th century european nobility clothes, and i specifically wanted him to have an ermine collar (i think is what its called) and an ermine collar as a shorthand for opulence and power. he's wearing the harkonnen colors, orange and blue.
irulan -> similar to duncan, more "generic" futuristic space clothing, BUT i did look a lot into 1920s glam evening wear, like long flowing dresses and everything, and star trek TOS for the sculpted hair. she wears the corrino clothes, black and grey, which u cant see much of but its ok, but she always had some type of atreides emblem in her clothes.
