"There! Trust me, you'll love this meat."
"You eat only meat, Hauk. I can assure you that there won't be any difference …"
Hauk's voice almost sounded wounded, looking at you with his mouth open and his hand on his chest.
"Little wolf! You wound my and my legion's pride! I need to teach you everything, don't I?!"
You hid a small smile without raising your gaze from your work. Since your arrival on Fenris, you have become, without your surprise, completely under the care of your savior and…well, protector? You were still unsure.
When you felt like the world wasn't still trying to smash your heart, you finally met the "father" of your new master. He laughed, saying that he was impressed that a little thing like you could be able to tame one of his sons' hearts, and welcomed you.
It felt off being so easily accepted like that; maybe being cast aside all your life had made the concept of being welcomed like this almost an alien concept. Even if you were tasked to take care of your "master," Hauk had mostly just made you do the simplest of work and usually treated you not like a servant at all. To be fair, you were the one that decided to take care of him since even the concept of bathing was a repulsion for him.
He was still mumbling and humming when the sound stopped, shifting into short and fast sniffs. He started to move around, sniffing everything, and it became absolutely weird when his nose was practically on you.
"Hauk?" You raised your eyebrow, and he just kept sniffing. His nose on your neck, provoking a small ticklish sensation on your skin. You shivered and tried to show him off, more offended by this sudden action of his.
"Hauk! Cut it out! What's wrong with you?!"
In response, he grabbed your wrist and kept on sniffing you. His expression was serious, quite scary, to be honest. He seemed nervous, almost angry.
"…Now, do you mind explaining WHY you have the smell of Leif all over yourself?"
His voice was lower, closer to a rumble. It was completely different from his usual cheerful or abrasive tone; it was like hearing a wolf that growled. You gulped; it was a rarità that he could make you shiver in your boots, and now was one of those moments.
"L…Leif?"
"The ugly mutt that looks like a hog…"
"…Oh!"
Suddenly, mostly for saving yourself from a danger that you were sure was a few inches from you, you raised a shirt that he had barely noticed. One long string connecting the fabric to a needle, the stitches here and there…a mending work. Only, that was not his shirt.
"...he…he came…" He asked if I could help him out, and I…sort of accepted?"
"…HE…" His eyes widened, his canine teeth showed off, and he snorted, like he was repressing a bark or another growl. He was controlling himself, for your own sake at least.
"… He said you were in the same squad. I thought you would not mind…" you said with an inch of remorse.
"I wouldn't! But now you reek of his smell!"
"You're unreasonable…"
Those two were enough to have him on you. His hands caged you between his frame and the bed; the sudden change of weight made you almost lose balance. His braids touched slightly your face; now his darker eyes were completely on you.
"No, I'm a man that loves you enough to hate the thought of another man close to you."
You should have been used to these changes in him, knowing that he was the closest thing that could remind you of the sea. Now covered in ice, you still could hear the streams under the cold surface, rumbling and howling like a storm, an immobile threat that you could almost feel grumbling under your feet. Hauk was the sea, stormy or peaceful, quiet or dangerous. He was everything, and you still had to learn so much from it and from him.
His hand caressed your neck, never moving too close to your liking, still a line that you had set and he respected.
"Even imagining one of my brothers talking about you inflames me to my bones. You really have no idea what you did to me, little wolf… or what I could do to you…"
You wanted to feel captivated by his words, and maybe you did a little, but you preferred removing his hand from your neck, caressing with your thumb a few scars from old fights.
"I don't want you talking like this… I don't like you jealous."
"A wolf must do what he can to protect what is his."
"I thought that wolves were brothers to each other…"
"Yes, but…" He kissed your hand; his somehow messy and well-kept beard scratched your delicate one. "I'm a possessive one. Aim for my treasure, and I'll bite."
"Umps…" You removed your hand. He could honeycomb every word from his mouth, but you never fell for his antics, stubborn like you were. Too bad that it was what made him love you more and more day by day.
"I just want to be helpful, Hauk. I'm literally sitting all day. I need to work, or I'll get crazy!"
"You can get crazy with me, you know?"
He laughed when the shirt struck his face.
"You are impossible!"
"I'm in love, little wolf; deal with it!"
///
"We should check on the north, just to be sure."
"Yes, I think it's… Oh! Hauk, good timing, did you—"
Before he could finish his words, Hauk punched his brother's face so hard that even Hedvig seemed impressed.
"FU—YOU DAMN BASTARD!" Leif tried to speak between his hands and the rivers of blood. "YOU BROKE MY DAMN NOSE!"
"Teach you a lesson. Try again to use my little wolf as your tailor, and I'm striking for your…shorter parts."
Hauk grinned, showing off again his teeth with a menacing look.
Hedvig, between himself, thanked his common sense and the fact that he had already made other serfs tend to his cape that morning.
