WIP Wednesday
Thanks for the tag @calif0rnication !
I just got done writing Just a Little Circuit and Breaker Treatment and posted it last night, and I haven't really been working too much on anything else. So... I guess y'all can have a snippet of a WIP I started a couple months ago but I don't know if I'll ever get around to finishing. It's a Hate Ending AU but it doesn't exactly follow the canon of the Hate Ending in-game, and it's from Volt's perspective, not the player/reader's. Volt is definitely... much more manipulative in this one. If I ever do finish it, I do plan for it to have a happy ending. But as it stand right now, I've only written one chapter, and if I remember correctly, I had about four or five planned. Well. Without further ado, here's a snippet from the unreleased first chapter of Short Fuse.
"What happened to the human?" Eddie grunts, turning his face to the side to look at Volt with hazy eyes.
Volt immediately frowns and drops Eddie's hand. "Don't worry about them, Eddie. I've made sure they'll never darken our doorstep again."
"What?" Eddie tries to push himself up off the floor to fully look at Volt, shock evident on his face, but he's still fatigued, and his elbows shake and collapse under him. Volt ignores his response in favor of attending to Eddie's exhaustion. To focus on taking care of him, the way he's always meant to.
"You need rest right now, Eddie. You're clearly delirious." Volt moves behind Eddie and gathers one arm under his neck and the other under his knees before picking him up. Eddie struggles against him, but Volt just shushes him gently and pulls his partner closer to his chest. "Don't fight so much. You're already worn out from the surge."
"Put me down, Volt," Eddie argues, pounding a fist against Volt's pecs. "We have to talk about this."
Volt ignores his tantrum—like the blows mean nothing—and starts walking out of the control room and towards the stairs to their loft apartment.
"Volt, listen to me!"
"No, you listen to me, Eddie." He stops at the bottom of the staircase and his eyes flash dangerously as he finally turns his sharp gaze to the man in his arms. "I am here to protect you. That is what you made me for, and I intend to do that until the very moment that I no longer can. So unless you would like to remedy this problem completely—in which case I can walk us both back to the mainframe right now and we can reset everything once and for all—you will let me handle your care as I see fit. Which will it be?"
Eddie looks taken aback. Volt can understand why. He's never been so blunt, so flippant, about his own demise. But no one has ever gotten past Volt's defenses and hurt Eddie like this, either. He's never hated himself like this before.
There are clearly a dozen things Eddie wants to say, and he ends up saying none of them—maybe because his circuits are too fried right now to figure out how to vocalize them or maybe because he knows whatever he says won't reach Volt.
Regardless, Volt hates himself even more when Eddie breaks eye contact and mutters, "Do whatever you think you need to."
Oh overprotective misguided Volt my beloved... Whatever will I do with you.
