Often credited as the protector and creator of humanity by clay, Prometheus is one of the notable titans of his generation. Hesiod writes that Prometheus was a trickster who tricked Zeus himself by causing him to choose between two offerings, one undesirable but wrapped in desirable fat and the other desirable but wrapped in ugly cow's stomach, of which Zeus picked the fat. His trick caused Zeus to become irate and take fire and light from humanity, which Prometheus later steals back by hiding it in a fennel stalk. Zeus again becomes angered and sends the first woman as the detriment of man, Pandora. As punishment he is chained to a rock and has his liver eaten daily by an eagle, regrowing as the day goes on, only to be eaten again the next day. In some versions of the tale he is later freed by Heracles and reconciles with Zeus. According to most accounts it is Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus who craft men from clay, and to Athenians he was worshiped alongside Athena and Hephaestus as highly important, sometimes said to be the one who helps 'birth' Athena from the head of Zeus with an ax. He is seen as the 'god of man' essentially, giving us the traits of art, thought, and life through sculpting us in the image of the gods.
