A: Actually, the first two Danganronpa (especially the first one) did get quite a lot of people unhappy with the endings. The first one was quelled because the second game was announced (which was a direct sequel). The second one got overshadowed by the terrible Danganronpa 3 anime, and the existence of Ultra Despair Girls covered up a lot of the remaining questions of both titles. V3 has yet to get this privilege.
As for the attack thing, well, this is where we have to agree to disagree. I never felt that way because I have assumed that the “real” world they mentioned has nothing to do with our world and that the “fans” are not me.
Even the author in the interview said the same thing. There are hints to this. For example, “Danganronpa” in their world is a worldwide phenomenon with millions of watchers, while in our world, Danganronpa is a niche, it doesn’t sell millions. I see the whole thing as an exaggerated parody. It is hilarious and smart. It’s like watching old Simpson or Southpark.
Secondly, other than the perceived attack, the lack of explanation towards the ending is also heavily criticized. For example, are they real or fiction? What is outside the school? Is cospox real? Is the mastermind telling the truth or not?
Lastly, the fact that everything is fiction is seen as destroying the franchise as a whole. Ironically, the message of the game is fiction impacts real life, therefore it doesn’t matter.
While it’s true that all Danganronpa’s endings are open-ended (which is also another reason why it baffles me how much people hated it), DRV3 is particularly divisive because of a combination of these reasons. As for me personally, they were exactly the reasons why I love it so much.
