Yesterday, I was reminded of self care. My parents don't practice it enough. Thankfully, my mom is still here, shining vibrantly at 61 years old; my dad's death anniversary was yesterday. Been nine years since he's been gone and I wonder what life would be like if he was still here. My parents were the handbooks to sacrifice. I didn't grow up living lavishly and I'm sure there's plenty of people who can relate. Despite our financials, I learned about protecting our loved ones. In my twenties, I knew this too well. I'd sacrifice my last to make friends and family comfortable. That's awesome... but there was rarely ever anything left for me. You don't want to be the _____ who could've helped but didn't but at some point, you have to ask who or what will save you when that cape is on. Yesterday, I gave myself permission to rest my mind. My schedule included a training run; I nixed it. I was going to cook dinner; didn't happen. I wish my parents practiced this more because I saw the fatigue even when they tried to smile past it. As a parent, I relate to doing the same thing but I'm learning to trust my son a bit. I hope that I break the cycle and help him understand that he too, should know his balance.
