mctna’s writing has a lot of flaws but i can think of no greater example than gyeol...he’s so obviously there to be a characterization device and make the leads look better and it drives me insane because he’s literally the character archetype i like the most LOL...devoted silent gentle w the people he protects...
couldn’t even defend hui-jae when that guy who killed her mom was there
? just stood there when yeon was killed?
was literally just present in the scene where ihwaru was attacked to demonstrate their impending doom and to make hui jae look better when she saved him + demonstrated concern for him + act as a hwihui plot device
was also just there in the beginning to prove madame seo’s concern for hui-jae and control over her and hui-jae’s ignorance of how deeply madame seo took care of the kisaengs
it’s just so disappointing because the other characters literally have more development than gyeol which is...disappointing to say the least...hui-jae could have used some characters in her corner (hwa-wol doesn’t really count imo...she’s used for comic relief like mun-bok but doesn’t have the medical skills to come in handy and often just acts as a messenger/plot device to show hui-jae’s tender side, and the male leads have other characters to play off of [see sung-rok and tae-ryeong for ex.]). i think he could have been a really interesting character to develop and the fact that mctna’s episodes were cut down may be a factor here but it’s still so frustrating? the flaws in his writing are just so prominent that it’s impossible to ignore
Had to finally come here and talk about Hospital Playlist and this writer and director that always ends up breaking people’s hearts with her second lead syndrome and guess the husband game! She’s doing it again by the way. In a way Hospital playlist reminds me as long as with most of the shows by this writer of the American show Girl meets world, about coming of age and reality but also about understanding what love is to people. Because of this the writer and director chuck so much meta into the script and scenes that it’s sad when I read so many people missing it! Too many people have fallen for this writers tricks again when in reality her endgames for now, what the meta of the show is heavily showing is that Songhwa and Andrea end up together, what’s between them right now is his priesthood and her refusing to deal with her feelings and focus instead on her job. This is is still in the works like how Taek in reply 1988 was still behind the scenes for so long and people refused to believe she planned it from the start! That’s what’s happening yet again to people who think Songhwa and Ikjun are endgame unfortunately! Ikjun is going to end up with Jang I know it’s weird, I was shocked as well but the clues are there, there’s so much clues there especially episode 10 and it’s starting to be hinted at more aggressively as well, we’ll still in the subtext.
I’ve had my fair share in analysing meta and subtext of a writer and understanding why gent think of of love and life. It also caused shipping wars it caused a lot of fights. It’s annoying when a writer does this Tbh but it’s also incredible that there’s another writer obsessed with meta and mystery and guessing the end game. So I’ll be here posting my thoughts on Hospital playlist. I unless the writer shifts her script during season 2 or 3 right now I would say the end game is already been planned. More to come on that
My second lead syndrome again 😭

this scene in episode 6 is everything to me...not only are tae-ryeong and gyeol my “gets ten lines combined” faves, but the idea of them just standing outside awkwardly watching each other the whole time bang-won, madame seo, and hui-jae are talking is peak comedy.
you can also see their shoes in the shot and it’s madame seo (the black flower shoes) nearest to gyeol, bang-won (the tall black shoes) nearest to tae-ryeong, and hui-jae between the both of them.
