how did you start doing graphics and any tips for someone trying to do it
Oh wow I donât know if Iâm the best person to answer since my graphics are okay I guess but not that impressive. But Iâm very flattered you thought of me to ask that!
I started making graphics a very very long time ago, before Tumblr existed actually (yeah Iâm a grandma in internet years I know). I posted them on discussion forums and later on LiveJournal, started back in 2003. I stopped for a while and picked up again when I joined Tumblr a few years ago.Â
I donât think I have a lot of tips except practice, practice, practice.Â
First, find yourself a version of Photoshop. Honestly I havenât used other graphic design programs since 2003 and to be fair, yes itâs complicated but itâs also the only one out there thatâs gonna give you the best results if you spend time on it.Â
Find a style, some fandom graphic makers and general graphic designers you like and try to recreate their work, aim for what you like. Behance is a good place to look at for inspiration. Not to say copy EXACTLY what they do or anything but itâs good for practice to look at works you enjoy and try to recreate it. I often did that at first, it taught me new technics, forced me to find how to do specific things by looking for tutorials (youtube has plenty of them) and I learnt pretty much on my own that way.
IMPORTANT POINT: I always gave credits to the original designers with a link to their account if I posted the results online ALWAYS CREDIT YOUR INSPIRATION.Â
Overtime youâll find a style youâre good at and you like making.Â
Hope the helps Anon! Feel free to come to message me for more specific tips if you want ;)
Saving as JPG vs PNG for tumblr
I have read/watched alot on this subject in order to make up my own mind.
JPG: Smaller file size so they load quicker on the blog/dash. When it comes to publishing edits/stills/graphics to tumblr at the small dimensions we use, I think .JPG is perfect.
PNG: Bigger file size so it takes longer to load on the blog/dash. .PNG is used for large Hi-Res images, transparent images, printing, HD backgrounds ect.
In this video he explains the tech differences between the save settings and this is a good short video on the subject also.
