God Be With You (And Also My Resignation)
All right, so if you donât remember this guy Kazim from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, heâs the head of this secret group â the Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword. Their whole job is to protect the Holy Grail â like, forever â and they take it way too seriously. This dudeâs lighting matches in an underground tomb full of petroleum, chasing Indy through Venice with a machine gun, losing half his guys in an explosion between two freighters â total chaos â and somehow still manages to part amicably with Dr. Jones â all gentleman-like, like heâs shaking hands after a tennis match instead of a death duel. âGood chase, Doctor, well played! Shame about my crispy brethren. Maybe the others swam to safety after you punched them off the boat? I must say, amid all the excitement with the giant propeller, I kind of lost track.â
So imagine, later that evening, the surviving Brotherhoodâs all managed to gather together for a postâboat chase debrief. Everyoneâs sitting around, bandaged up, smelling like diesel and shame. Kazim struts in, all âBrothers! The Grailâs safe! đâ
One guy pipes up, âWait, whereâs the American? đ¤ â Kazim, all casual, goes, âOh, him? I let him go. đâ
The room *freezes*. âYou WHAT?! đ˛â
Kazim straightens up, proud of himself: âYeah â I told him, âGod be with you on your quest.ââ
You can just hear the collective groan. Another brother mutters, âOh, thatâs fantastic. You blessed him on his way to undo a thousand years of work.â
Kazimâs still nodding, oblivious. âAnd technically⌠he let me go.â
Another guy deadpans from the corner, âdid you trot out the âmy soul is preparedâ thing?â
Kazimâs sputtering â âI did! He wasnât impressed!â
Chaos eruptsâguys shouting, âYou got captured?! đĄâ âYou *negotiated* with him? đ¤Śââď¸â âYou lost to an archaeologist in a *boat fight*? đ¤â
âWell regardless of who let who go,â he says, âTurns out he wasnât after the Grail â heâs just looking for his father.âÂ
And the murmuring starts. One guy leans forward, real slow: âAnd⌠whereâs his father?â
Kazim, still confident: âOh, heâs being held in the Castle of Brunwald.â
Silence. Just dead air. Then one brother goes, âWait, you told him that?â
Kazimâs smiling awkwardly now, âWell, yeah â I figured, you know, if heâs not after the GrailâŚâ
Another guy interrupts: âKazim, his father is the only person alive who can find the Grail!â
The room goes dead quiet, everyone staring at him â and then another brother jumps in, voice climbing, âYeah, not just anyone â the worldâs leading expert on the one thing weâve been trying to hide for a thousand years!â
Now theyâre piling on â âThe guy wrote the book on the Grail!â âItâs literally his lifeâs work!â
Kazimâs blinking, looking around the room like, âWell⌠when you say it like thatâŚâ
And someone snaps, âHow else do you want us to say it?! You just handed a rescue mission to the Grail Whisperer!â
Another voice from the back: âWe spent a millennium building traps, codes, and secret maps â and you just gave the answer key to his kid!â
Kazimâs shoulders sink. âOkay⌠that does sound bad when you all pile it up like that, but heâs locked up, so⌠đâ
âLocked up?! đ¤ Now his son, the puzzle-solving, trap-dodging archaeologist whoâs robbed every grave from Honduras to Madagascar, knows *exactly* where to go! đڏââď¸â
Kazimâs face *drops*. âI see how that looks bad⌠đŁâ
Someone else pipes up, furious: âYou didnât protect the Grail, you connected the two people most capable of finding it! Youâve basically introduced the thieves to the bank manager!â
Kazimâs flailing: âBrothers, maybe the castleâs hard to reach! đď¸â Another guy scoffs, âOh sure, heâll trip on a rock. đ Whatâs he gonna do, raid it singlehandedly? đâ
And another brother goes, âHeâs Indiana Jones! Thatâs literally his thing!â
A grizzled brother slams his fist: âI was once with the Brotherhood of the Lost Ark! đ But now theyâre *gone*! Shut down! Jones planned the whole thing on a chalkboard and before our Brotherhood could come up with a new secret map, the Ark was taken đ¤â
The roomâs a riot now. đŁď¸ Kazimâs waving his hands. One pessimist mutters, âDoesnât matterâthe Grailâs in a self-destructing temple anyway. đĽâ
That stops everyone cold. âWait, what?â
âYeah, yeah â if you cross the seal, the whole floor opens up! Swallows you! Gone! Straight to the center of the earth!â
Now theyâre all talking at once. âOh, thatâs fantastic!â one guy yells. âSo the Grailâs basically got lava insurance!â
Another brother adds, âItâs got, like, divine motion sensors! Step one toe over the line â BOOM â youâre gone! Cup stays put, thief goes to hell!â
Kazimâs face sinks as the noise builds â guys shouting, hands waving, somebody drawing a diagram in the air:
âImagine it, brothers â thief crosses the seal, ground splits open, Grailâs like, âNah, I got this.ââ
That sets them off worse: âGreat! So weâve been dying for a booby-trapped cup?! đ
And then another guy jumps in: âYeah, and what about the Ark, huh? That thing zapped Nazis by itself! These relics donât need us â theyâve got built-in smite mode!â
Now everyoneâs shouting â âSo what are we even doing here?!â âA thousand years guarding self-protecting artifacts! Weâre basically the Brotherhood of Unnecessary Labor!â âThese secret maps that weâve been building for millennia, how about we justâ I donât knowâ donât make a map at all?!â
The room erupts again. Someone shouts, âOh, right! Letâs hide it by hiding it! What a concept!â
Kazimâs trying to calm them down â âBrothers, please, mistakes were made!â â and someone yells, âYeah, by you!â He exhales, looks down at the cruciform tattoo on his chest, and mutters to himself, ââŚI wonder if laser removalâs covered by the Brotherhoodâs insurance.â
