Think BIG.. Life in reality has all variation within both the extremes. I saw this man sitting below an ‘image of the king’ painted on a wall of a temple entrance in Udaipur, Rajasthan. I just shot this image without any reason, except for the contrast in the subjects. It was the only shot I got, for, the man in the picture didn’t allow me to shoot after this. Sometimes, the under-priviledged persons feel offended when someone tries to take a picture of them! Better respect their feelings and move away saying ‘Sorry’. Bottom line: Holding a camera doesn't give us the right to photograph anyone we like. When people object, we should respect and refrain from shooting. Well, if erasure is erasing or obscuring (etc etc), then its natural counter would be: to name or to voice. Last week, @beinggreenwhileblack sent us toward the Afrocentric concept “nommo”, which “refers to the powers of the word to generate and create reality” as conceived by Molefi Asante. The term recognizes the power of the spoken word. How does this apply to visual places like IG, other news forms, or even things we read? Even though we might not ever read a caption out loud, we’ll carry these images or narratives with us after we put our phones down, and eventually share them with our peers, colleagues, children, and others. Our reiterations then become spoken word. Our spoken word thus affects reality. Finally, when we name, then, it’s not only important that we do so, but that we do so accurately and wholly. More on this below. //\\ \\// How is listening or giving space a form of naming? We’re open to discussion, but it has to do with allowing for this recognizing to happen and have its place. If we’re constantly dismissing how others experience the world, then we’re not giving the space to name, and effectively erasing or even limiting. In the last comments, @skynoire expounded on the dangers of the single narrative, or even the pressure one feels to reinforce a single narrative or fit a certain neat box or stereotype.
