Fluorescence microscopy paints beautiful pictures of living things. By attaching fluorescent proteins to molecules, scientists can track them in cells and find out how they work. This technology has enabled countless discoveries, but it can cost around £100,000. What if your lab can't afford that? And how can students get their hands on this equipment? Researchers in the USA may have the answer: a $50 fluorescence microscope they call the glowscope. In video tutorials, they explain how to build one from LEDs, a smartphone, and coloured plastic. Here, we see pictures of zebrafish embryos captured with glowscopes using six different smartphone cameras. They all show that a molecule (green) is restricted to a small area of the brain, which requires high sensitivity and resolution. Thanks to its low cost and simple design, the glowscope may soon bring the magic of fluorescence microscopy to a classroom, museum, or kitchen table near you.

Scientists noticed the crystal jelly or Aequorea Victoria would glow green when agitated and glows green under a UV light and that led to advancements in science. After researching the jellyfish and trying to find out the reason it glowed then Osamu Shimomura discovered GFP. They isolated the green fluorescent protein or GFP and cloned it for scientific use. GFP wasn’t perfect and lost its color all the time and wasn’t ideal for more. Researcher Roger Tsien developed GFP variants that came in many different colors and were brighter than original GFP. These allowed researchers to observe more than one thing at a time, the world's leading hospitals use GFP to study all different sicknesses, breast cancer tumor tracking or HIV and even Alzheimer's This took decades of work and took much funding.
Every region seems to have a regional Meowth nowadays. This Meowth is based off of test subjects that are transfected with the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) gene along with the actual gene of interest where GFP is a harmless protein that make the specimen fluoresce to allow researchers to know that their gene of interest also made it into the specimen (or at least be more sure that it did).
