So while my jaw has been healing, I've been playing tears of the kingdom! And it reignited an old fandom flame I had all the way back in high school when breath of the wild came out, I had started a fanfic then discontinued it where basically Link couldn't be a hylian so he could turn into anything else! Here is a redo of my old Gerudo Link design, and bellow is my second attempt I did close to 5 years ago.
I might rewrite the fic, idk, but I'm super happy with how this came out!
My outrage given voice: Tag your AO3 fics properly!!
I’m talking about the Gerudo!Link (Gerudo Link) tag in the Legend of Zelda fandom specifically. You should only be using that tag when Link is a Gerudo, whether Vai or Voe, not because he’s wearing either of the outfits! That’s when you use the Gerudo Vai outfit or Gerudo Voe outfit tags as needed. And in the event that he’s only being raised among them for whatever reason then you’re supposed to use the Raised Gerudo!Link (Raised by Gerudo Link) tag. That was the whole point of having those types of tags people! (EX: Zora!Link, Goron!Link, Sheikah!Link, Yiga!Link; granted the first two are referring to when he’s wearing the respective mask but he’s still the Race while wearing them so...) All that also applies to Zelda or any other character you’re changing the Race of, so’s you people know! (EX: Yiga!Impa or Yiga!Paya, Hylian!Mipha, Gerudo!Zelda, Kokiri!Hestu)
I’m just getting real tired of trying to find fics where Link is the Lone Gerudo Male/King, I strangely have not found one where he’s born a Gerudo woman who might or might not be Wrong Bodied/Trans whether as in spite or despite having the Soul of the Hero but it might be that I haven’t looked closely enough (that, or no one’s thought to write one), and finding that it’s just one more where he’s being admired or fantasized about in either or both outfits by Zelda. Which isn’t bad, mind, I love those fics as much as the people who wrote them, I just want to be able to find what the tag is supposed to have in the story, not what people are mistaking it to mean. TL;DR: Author’s on AO3 should only be using the Gerudo!Link tag when he is Gerudo in the story, not because he’s wearing either of the Gerudo outfits.

[Image ID: 4 drawings of Legend of Zelda characters.
The first drawing is a colored drawing of Link as a Gerudo, with light brown skin, red hair and green eyes. He is standing with a questioning look, arms behind his back. He has his hair in a short ponytail and signature bangs. He is wearing a short-sleeved green tunic with the bottom pulled up on one side. He wears a patterned blue sash around his waist and brightly colored flourishes and white hyrule imagery are used throughout the outfit. He wears light brown trousers, brown boots and white half-gloves that go to his elbow. The Master Sword and a wooden bow are attached to his back.
The second drawing is lineart of Zelda and Link, Zelda is wearing a dress, and Link is wearing feminine Gerudo clothes. Zelda is on her tiptoes, holding a cut ponytail in one hand and a knife in the other with a smile. Link is sitting on a stool in front of her, with sholder-length hair.
The fourth is a two-panneled comic. In the first panel Zelda is in front, marching towards the viewer, looking angry. Link, in the tunic, looks on, confused, a question mark above his head. The second panel Zelda is looking up to an unpictured person, pointing up angrily. Link is running behind her, shown nearly two heads taller than her, looking concerned, an exclamation point over his head. End ID.]
Couldn’t get over the Gerudo Link idea I had…. *pats Link’s head* “This kid can fit so much Nonbinary in him”
Main ideas: Link met (King to be) Ganondorf as a kid, and they got along like a forest fire. (And Link saw one (1) Gerudo Voe and was like “You can Do that?” and stole some Gender for himself.) But, Gerudo Town, Link’s hometown with his aunt, is still Vai-only which means not many friend visits and no boy clothes. Link grows up to be a fierce warrior, while Ganondorf takes up his place as King of the Gerduo. Meanwhile, Zelda, Princess of Hyrule, prepares herself for history to repeat itself once more, but first has to figure out where the Hero is because he apparently is no where to be found in the immediate kingdom. So she expands her search with her friend and protector Impa. They get attacked when exploring the Gerudo Desert and Link ends up saving them and Zelda is just like “That One!!” On-sight adopts a Very Confused Link.

Born and Raised, Gerudo Edition!
Breath of the wild AU, in which link grows up in one of the other regions of hyrule.
And this one is in which Link was raised by the Gerudo!
Though Gerudo!Link is a well known AU within BOTW fanstuff, this version is quite different from Hyrule!Link, Such as the weapons he uses:
While Link still uses a sword, he also uses a shield. Due to one of the main Gerudo weapons, he learns the way of sword and shield. While he likes using a sword, he dislikes the lack of defence. Another reason is that, if you asked him you deniy, so he can go shield sledding and sand sledding at a moments notice.
When Link was found outside the town, Urbosa took him in before she was chieftain. Urbosa acts a a mother figure for link, teaching him the ways of the gerudo and looking after him when he gets in trouble, to some she seem like the strict mother (and at times she is) she still kind and caring for link.
When Link was young, there were those that argued that Link should not be allowed in the town. When link grew Link became confused on their identiy, sometimes feeling male, while at other times feeling something else. After a long talk with Urbosa, she reliesed that she was both male and female. when this was brought to the attention of the those againsts link staying within the town, they relented their words. Its not the first time that one of them was born in a body that didn’t match them completely.
With Link living in the desert, she grew used to the heat of the dessert, not needing the amount of protection the usaul Hyilain would need. She loves the heat of the desert, finding the seas of sand calming against the world. When he leaves the desert and heads north, even in the hylian plain he needs to wear extra layers. He always makes a case to pack extra gems to help agasint the cold. She especailly hates the Rito mountains.
Thanks to Urbosa’s teahces, and Links own fasination and Luck, she has a knack for finding and taming sand seals, as well as riding with them. To everyones surprise, this skill transferred to all most all animals across the lands, especially horses, they’ve basically walked up to her to say hi. One time Link called out for one of the wild horses out in the plains infant of them and one of the wild horses in the herd came running, and also alouded him to ride them with no problems.
When Link has to get the Master Sword, she is found by Hyrule through Zelda, who was visiting Urbosa. Link and Zelda have a almost sibling relation ship, with urbosa being their mother/acting as. They talk everynow and then, when she visits the town.
At the thought of being the weilder of the master sword, he is conflicted. He had grown up to become a warrior for the gerudo, to live her live in the desert with some adventures to the grasslands. While uncertain on the inside, he takes the master sword with the grace and seriousness that the situation would require. While he is fine with fighting for the gerudo, she is unsure as to fighting for the rest of hyrule. she knows nothing and owes nothing to them.
