Larry stared at her a moment, breathing deeply. 'What a masterly understatement,' he said at last; 'you are always ready with the apt platitude to sum up a catastrophe. How I envy you your ability to be inarticulate in the face of Fate.'
My Family and Other Animals, Gerald Durrell
"You cannot begin to preserve any species of animal unless you preserve the habitat in which it dwells. Disturb or destroy that habitat and you will exterminate the species as surely as if you had shot it. So conservation means that you have to preserve forest and grassland, river and lake, even the sea itself. This is not only vital for the preservation of animal life generally, but for the future existence of man himself -- a point that seems to escape many people."
~ Gerald Durrell, naturalist and author (7 Jan 1925-1995), a favourite author when I was a kid....

david attenborough had his (unofficial) position as britain’s zoologist in chief bequeathed to him by his mentor gerald durrell (of my family and other animals fame, founder of whipsnade zoo and heavily involved in starting many of britain’s conservation programs). and like gerald durrell, he had an elder brother very famous in a radically different field (lawrence durrell the novelist, richard attenborough the actor).
so what i am saying is which famous guy has a younger brother in zoology? we need to get this handover organised.
