📝 by @jase_falk: Leslie Feinberg was a transgender author and activist who’s writing was influential in bringing awareness to how transgender people have always existed throughout history and how trans liberation is tied up with anti-colonial, anti-racist work as well as with working class struggles. Feinberg used ze/hir pronouns, although ze felt that pronouns were often context based for hir and has identified as both a butch lesbian and as a trans man throughout hir life. Feinberg often pointed to the ways in which the English language has a limited vocabulary expressing the experiences of gender non-conforming individuals. Feinberg is probably best known for hir novel Stone Butch Blues which won the Lambda Literary Award in 1994. Stone Butch Blues in many ways parallel’s Feinberg’s own life as a trans working class Jewish person, but Feinberg has said the novel is not autobiographical. Feinberg had a very broad definition of transgender that included all those who “cross the cultural boundaries of gender” (transgender warriors).
