Studying isn't always aesthetically pleasing, with neat notes and a clean desk. Sometimes both of your desks are covered in food and art supplies, and you're just trying to find enough space to set your laptop.

Sometimes you're the only senior taking intro to college comp because you thought you could get out of it, so you left it, and all your other gen eds, for last while taking all the fun classes first.

Not sure how many people who haven’t already taken a gen-ed public speaking class will see this, but if you can take it as a 3 week intersession course you totally should. Tips for survival of the 3 week public speaking blitz include:

Research your professor. This goes for any class, but if you end up with a bad professor for a 3 week class, you won’t have enough time to figure out how to work with them.

Get the book. I’m serious. Find it free online if you can, but make sure you have some sort of a copy. This may be just my class, but the book for my class had a ton of info about how to actually lay out your speeches and even a template that you could basically copy down and add your speech to. Depending on your prof, you might be lucky and have access to that info if they post it, but in a 3 week class you won’t have much time to suddenly decide “oh fuck I need the book.” Don’t risk it.

Start as early as possible. Most introductory public speaking classes (to my admittedly limited knowledge of the subject) will have you do some sort of informative speech and some sort of persuasive speech. That probably sounds a lot like your first college writing class, and you’d be right! I was lucky, they gave us access to the class materials on our portal (we use Brightspace) a week early, so when she said “pick your topic for your first speech on Friday,” I had both my topics ready and could basically start researching straight away.

This probably all seems obvious, and maybe this is a silly post, but I hope someone sees it and decides not to waste a 3 credit slot for 16 weeks and just goes for the 3 week option. These tips also go for college comp classes, but I wouldn’t want to do one of those in 3 weeks. I took composition 2 in an 8 week fall session on accident, and due to a combination of stubbornness and poor planning hated every minute of it. If I’d known these things going into that, I’d have been much better off.

In my life I’ve noticed that a lot of people love to get angry at the school system. Specifically, how the school system doesn’t teach you useful things.

Typically, when these folks use the word “useful”, it centers around the idea that school must be job training. That is, school must focus on teaching things that are immediately and obviously applicable in the child’s future, which typically means basic math, reading, and possibly history, and also skills like personal finance, home economics, and skills that pertain specifically to the job that students intend to take on after school. This mentality typically excludes present day high school level academics.

When students get to college, quite a bit of them (and their parents) also complain about general education classes. After all, an engineering major must learn engineering, and must learn as much as possible to be competitive in the job market. Why learn things that are not applicable to your career?

Though the reasons are similar, I’ll tackle this in two major parts, starting with pre-college academics.
